A note from Doug Porter, CEO, and Paul Huebener, Chairman, Board of Directors

Dear committed friends, supporters, donors, and volunteers, On behalf of RMHC®-CNI’s board of directors and staff, we are pleased to share highlights from a stellar year at the charity. In 2012, we were proud to expand our ability to serve families in three locations: • The Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children’s opened on June 26, 2012, with 66 bedrooms to serve the families of hospitalized children receiving care at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital. • Nine sleep rooms opened inside the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in June 2012, allowing us to serve the families of the most critical patients. • The Ronald McDonald Family Room — the first in Illinois — opened in February 2012 inside Edward Hospital in Naperville, Ill. The Family Room features two bedrooms and common areas for families to relax and regroup in the hospital environment. While RMHC-CNI made extraordinary strides toward growth and expansion, we also remained steadfast and focused on continuing to serve families in our other three Ronald McDonald Houses near University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, Advocate Children’s Hospital and Loyola University Medical Center. Our Scholarship Program and Care Mobile programs also continued to thrive, offering assistance to young people desperate for solutions to achieving a higher education or receiving medical care and referrals for specialized care. RMHC-CNI’s achievements and its ability to serve families and children would not be possible without the commitment and generosity of many and for that, we are forever grateful. RMHC-CNI’s mission and focus is to serve and improve the lives of: • The families of hospitalized children • Children who have little to no access to medical care • Students who would be unable to attend college without financial assistance RMHC-CNI serves these groups through three distinct and unique means of delivery: Housing for families at four Ronald McDonald Houses, a Ronald McDonald Family Room, Sleep Rooms in two hospitals; a Ronald McDonald Care Mobile that provides medical care and specialist referrals for medically underserved children, and a Scholarship Program that provides multiyear financial college aid for community-minded, academically outstanding and financially disadvantaged young people. Ronald McDonald Houses are designed to provide care, comfort and hospitality to the families of hospitalized children receiving care at local area hospitals. Many families stay for extended periods of time, finding a real “home away from home” during incredibly stressful times. Our Houses allow families to focus on the care and hopeful recovery of their children while their basic needs are met for little to no cost. RMHC-CNI’s Ronald McDonald Houses are located near Lurie Children’s, University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, Loyola University Medical Center, and Advocate Children’s Hospital.

Opened in 2012, the Ronald McDonald Family Room located inside Edward Hospital in Naperville, Ill. provides a place for families to rest and regroup just steps from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The Family Room features a playroom, kitchenette and multiple sitting areas. Two private sleep rooms are also available for families requiring an overnight stay.

In cooperation with Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital, the Care Mobile travels to underserved communities throughout Chicagoland to provide physicals, immunizations and specialist referrals to children who have no access to medical services.

Lurie Children’s Hospital and University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, sleep rooms are designed to provide accommodations to the families of children in the Intensive Care Unit. Families utilize the sleep rooms so they may be immediately available to their children at a moment’s notice.

Providing Care and Comfort in Times of Greatest Need In 2012, RMHC-CNI remained focused on the families and children we serve every day. As a charity, we are proud of the impact we have had and continue to have on the lives of those who are desperate and in need every day of the year. Through our three core programs RMHC-CNI served thousands of families and children in 2012, saving them millions of dollars in housing, medical and college expenses. Those we serve continue to express their gratitude for the care and assistance they have received through our programs and services.

Responding to Community Needs

Responding to the Needs in Our Community The priorities of RMHC-CNI’s board of directors and staff leadership are to maintain and support our current programs and services, strictly adhere to sound financial principles and to build on our vision for the future. We also stay abreast of the pressing needs of the children and families in our communities, many of whom are in need of our services. Specifically, the families of hospitalized children require housing accommodations while their child receives medical treatment at area hospitals. Unfortunately, the need for our services continues to grow every year and we are often approached by hospitals to expand our services to serve their clients. After careful consideration, a feasibility study, board study, oversight and approval, RMHC-CNI will decide whether building a Ronald McDonald House, a Ronald McDonald Family Room or sleep rooms near or inside an area hospital is appropriate. In 2012, we opened both the Ronald McDonald Family Room inside Edward Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children’s. Both projects have proven to be critical additions to the medical landscape in Chicagoland. The Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children’s and The Ronald McDonald Family in Edward Hospital are both near full capacity each night of the year. In 2014, RMHC-CNI will break ground on its fifth Ronald McDonald House to serve the families of hospitalized children receiving care at Cadence Health and Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Ill. Special care will be given to the families whose children will be receiving a six-week course of treatment at the CDH Proton Center. The Proton Center is Illinois’ first and only proton therapy center, a revolutionary and more precise treatment option for children battling certain cancers. Our focus and efforts as a charity are to provide care and comfort to the families and children in our communities. From our Scholarship Program to our Ronald McDonald Houses, we are proud to be a part of the lives of thousands of wonderful people each year.

Caring for Families and Children

The Ennis Family’s Stay at the Ronald McDonald House near Loyola The Ronald McDonald House near Loyola entered the Ennis family’s life in late 2012 after the birth of the couple’s premature twins. Prior to their births, Stephanie Ennis had been in and out of the hospital with premature labor and Braxton Hicks contractions. Not only was Stephanie experiencing periodic contractions, but she also suffered from preeclampsia. In late November, months before her due date, Stephanie’s doctor admitted her to Elmhurst Hospital. She was then transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in anticipation of the babies’ need for a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. While at Loyola, Stephanie received steroid shots and magnesium supplements to control the premature labor and preeclampsia.

On December 12, 2012, at 28 weeks gestation, Eleanor and Fiona were delivered by c-section at 1 pound, 7 ounces and 2 pounds, 3 ounces respectively. When the couple realized that their babies would be spending months in the NICU, a social worker asked them if they would be interested in staying at the Ronald McDonald House for the duration of their babies’ stay. “I had always seen the collection boxes at McDonald’s, but I never knew what the Ronald McDonald House was,” Stephanie said. “I thought it was for people in financial need,” Stephanie said. Although Stephanie was reluctant, her husband Mark toured the House and told Stephanie that he thought she was really going to like it. “Walking into the House is like getting a hug,” Mark said.

Although Mark was impressed with the House, the couple decided to return home to Rolling Meadows after Stephanie was discharged from the hospital. As they pulled away from the hospital to drive home, Stephanie questioned her ability to leave her babies every day. After spending one night at home, the couple decided to request a room at the House. They checked in on December 12 and spent several months as guests there. Mark and Stephanie appreciated that they didn’t have to worry about anything other than healing and taking care of their babies. “I don’t feel like a charity case here,” Stephanie said. “Being here has nothing to do with your education, race or gender. I feel like this is my home,” she said. Stephanie was also grateful for the people and parents she met during her stay.

“We understand each other’s trials and tribulations,” Stephanie said. “Everyone here is facing the same challenges and sickness has brought us together,” she said. The family checked out of the House on February 28 after 71 days, when the twins were discharged from the hospital. Eleanor and Fiona are now happy and healthy little girls with a bright future and loving parents. Stephanie, who is a school teacher, is committed to bringing her students back to the House to volunteer and her daughters when they are older. Stephanie felt that staying at the House made it possible for her to be calm and there for her twins. “Without the Ronald McDonald House I don’t know that I would be the mother that I am,” Stephanie said.

Donor Perspective

Ryan Baker CBS-2 Chicago’s Lead Sports Anchor Ryan Baker first became acquainted with RMHC-CNI in 2011 when he was a last minute fill in emcee for the McDonald’s All American Awards Banquet. As a sports anchor, he was familiar with the McDonald’s All American Games and the McDonald’s brand, but was not fully aware of RMHC-CNI’s mission. During the event, which was benefitting RMHC-CNI, Ryan became more familiar with the charity’s work and asked for ways to get involved.

“I was looking to become involved with a charity and RMHC-CNI has a great brand and reputation,” Ryan said. “I have been extremely blessed in my life and I believe that to those who much is given much is expected,” Ryan said. In 2012, Ryan emceed the All American Awards Banquet again and became an RMHC-CNI board member. He is also a member of RMHC-CNI’s Education Committee, the committee responsible for

selecting scholarship winners each year. “RMHC-CNI and the Ronald McDonald Houses truly improve the lives of countless individuals who otherwise wouldn’t have the means to stay close to their hospitalized child,” Ryan said. “The Houses provide relief to make things better for families and children who are enduring unimaginable things,” he said.

John and Carmen DeCarrier McDonald’s Owner/Operators John and Carmen DeCarrier first became involved with Ronald McDonald House Charities 20 years ago when they were working for the McDonald’s Corporation. In their roles at the corporation, both John and Carmen prepared meals for families at the local Ronald McDonald Houses in Chicagoland and Carmen also became involved with RMHC’s Scholarship Program.

Carmen has been a six-year member of RMHC-CNI’s board of directors and four-year chairman of RMHC-CNI’s Education Committee. Marsha Serlin CEO, United Scrap Metal Buyers and Recyclers United Scrap Metal first became involved with RMHC-CNI in 2005 when the Ronald McDonald House near Loyola contacted them for pop tab recycling. The leadership at United Scrap immediately started thinking about ways the company could further assist RMHC-CNI. That year the company decided to expand their pop tab recycling to all four Houses and began picking up the pop tabs for additional revenue.

They also established a Recycling Day, called “Recycle With Ronald”, which encourages all of their customers to recycle on a specified day, with a percentage being donated to RMHC-CNI. Since its inception, the event has raised over $500,000 to benefit the charity. “It’s a great event that combines recycling, education, sustainability and teamwork to raise funds for RMHC-CNI,” Marsha said.

Marsha, who has also served as a co-chair for construction of the new Streeterville House, feels that the Houses are a great gift to the Chicago area. “When you give money to the charity you can see the direct impact of your donation,” Marsha said. “In this charity, everything works to help provide a home away for families in need,” she said.
