1 General remarks 1.1 Preface

In 2009 the Research Center for Infectious Diseases in Würzburg looks back on a 16years story of success. Founded in 1993 as an initiative of Volker ter Meulen, Werner Goebel, Jörg Hacker and colleagues and financially supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Bavarian State Ministry of Sciences, the Research Center developed into an internationally recognized research institution which significantly contributed to the scientific profile of the University of Würzburg and served as a model for other universities and major research centers. In a stimulating scientific environment and supported by a series of externally funded research programmes in the field of infectious diseases the Würzburg Research Center especially spent many efforts to the support of the next generation of academics. The young investigator programme, which launched right from the beginning of the Center, was extremely successful and all former junior group leaders hold leading positions in academics today. To further strengthen the education in infectious diseases at the level of graduate students, the class “Infection and Immunity” has been established within the Würzburg Graduate School of Life Sciences (GSLS) in 2007, providing interdisciplinary research training for PhD students. After 16 successful years the Research Center for Infectious Diseases now experi-

ences a major step forward with the move to the new research center building. Based on plans of the Medical Faculty for the centralization of medical research institutions on the clinical campus of the University in Grombühl, the former Department of Surgery was reconstructed. In late summer 2009 the Research Center for Infectious Diseases together with the Rudolf Virchow Center moved successfully to this new building to improve and strengthen interdisciplinary biomedical research. The members of the Research Center for Infectious Diseases very much appreciate the support of all those who have contributed to put through this construction measure and to develop an attractive building which offers excellent parameters for research and education. Special thanks go to the Bavarian State Ministry of Sciences, Research and the Art which has generously provided the necessary funds, and to the members of the Bavarian Parliament, especially Manfred Ach and Prof. Dr. Walter Eyckmann for their parliamentary support during the building process. I also want to underline the support which we have permanently received from the University’s executive board. The Bavarian State Building Authority under the direction of Mr. Joachim Fuchs and the Department for University Building Operations under the direction of Dieter Maußner, notably his colleagues Bettina Waberseck and

Swantje Schröder, have accompanied the project with great commitment and skilled competence since the planning phase until the completion. During this process they have received support from the planning and engineering office Eckl & Partner which made sure of the construction measures to run amazingly smoothly. Last, but not least, my special thanks go to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c.mult. Jörg Hacker, Head of the Institute for Molecular Infection Biology from 1993 – 2008 and Speaker of the Research Center for Infectious Diseases from 2003 to 2008. It was especially his initiative, scientific reputation and mentoring of the young investigator groups that made the Würzburg Research Center for Infectious Diseases one of the internationally leading institutions in this field. In this booklet we present the interested readers the report about the ongoing projects of the groups and institutions of the Research Center. September, 2009
