Adult Life Adult Life Adult Life Packets An adult life packet contains adult life resources for individuals with Down syndrome. You will find information on local Self Advocacy groups, information on aging and Down syndrome, financial tips, reading lists, area activities and more. Calendar of Events Each month, DSI provides a Calendar of Events for adults with Down syndrome. The calendar highlights both DSI events and community events. There is lots going on, we’ll help you find it. Email [email protected] to begin receiving your copy.

DSI Dancers The DSI Dancers Program with the Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders is an exciting opportunity for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. Dancers are paired with a cheerleader “buddy” that they work with throughout the season and for special events. In addition to the friendships that develop and last year round, it is inspirational to watch the growth in confidence and personality of the dancers from the start of the program. Indiana Postsecondary Education Coalition Down syndrome Indiana plays a leading role in the Indiana Postsecondary Education Coalition (IPSEC). IPSEC promotes postsecondary education options for students with developmental disabilities. Live, Laugh, Dance Indy Live, Laugh, Dance is dance camp for individuals with Down syndrome ages 12-35. Held at IUPUI to achieve physical activity and learn new dances. Assessments take place before and after the dance camp and includes a variety of dances such as hip hop, contemporary and more! For more information contact Rachel Swinford at [email protected]. Terre Haute New in 2016! Live, Laugh, Dance is dance camp for individuals with Down syndrome ages 12-35. Held at Indiana State University to achieve physical activity and learn new dances. One-Stop-Shop: Adult Life Resources Parents tell DSI that what they need most from the organization are opportunities to connect and information & resources. In response, DSI is piloting a series of One-Stop-Shops in 2016. On Saturday, April 30th, the topic will be adult life resources and will feature a panel of Self Advocates moderated by Cindy Cobb. One-Stop-Shops are held at the Sol Center, 708 E Michigan Street, Indy. For more information, contact [email protected].

Prom Mark your calendars for May 21, 2016 as Down syndrome Indiana joins forces with several other groups, including, Best Buddies, the Hollis Adams Foundation, Special Olympics, and White River Christian Church to put on an amazing evening of food, fun and dancing for adults with intellectual disabilities. Self-Advocate Community Group The DSI Self Advocate Community Group meets on the fourth Thursday of every month, unless otherwise stated. The group enjoys fun activities such as horseback riding, English country dancing, and so much more! Self Advocate Stakeholders Group Down Syndrome Indiana along with the Hollis Adams Foundation founded the Self Advocate Stakeholders group. This group meets regularly throughout the year to discuss topics that are relevant to self advocacy. The goal to understand what programs exist, where there are gaps in services and where we can work together to fill those needs. For more information, please contact [email protected].

Self Advocate VIP Tent @ Buddy Walk® Calling all Self Advocates… Join us in the Self Advocate V.I.P. Tent at the Buddy Walk on the second Saturday in October. This is your chance to hang out with friends and enjoy age appropriate activities like karaoke, dancing and meeting and greeting friends.

Tennis Lessons The Park Tudor Tennis Team volunteers to host a free spring and fall tennis clinic for people with Down syndrome of all ages including adults (and siblings or friends) on Sundays from 4pm to 5pm at the Park Tudor tennis courts. Park Tudor is located at: 7200 N College Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46240. The free clinics are held in the Spring and Fall. Volunteer/Intern Program Down Syndrome Indiana relies heavily on volunteers to help us accomplish our mission. Self Advocates are welcome to volunteer with DSI. A wide variety of volunteer opportunities are available on Mondays through Thursdays between the hours of 8:30AM and 2:30PM. Additional opportunities are available during DSI events. Annual Events Annual Events Annual Conference The 2016 conference will be held May 13th and 14th 2016. Pat Winders, author of Gross Motor Skills for Children with Down syndrome will be this year’s speaker. Contact [email protected] for more information.

Buddy Walk® The Buddy Walk® was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October and to promote the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. The National Buddy Walk® Program welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. In 2016, Down Syndrome Indiana will be hosting a walk in Indianapolis and in the greater Lafayette area. Buddy Walk® Indy The Indianapolis Buddy Walk® boasts 5,000 participants annually and is held on the 2nd Saturday of October. This walk is a 2.6 mile walk in which anyone can participate without special training. It is a wonderful, heartwarming event that celebrates the many abilities and accomplishments of people with Down syndrome. Whether you have Down syndrome, know someone who does, or just want to show your support, come and join the Buddy Walk® in your community! For more information, e-mail: [email protected].

CFHR Day in May Down Syndrome Indiana partners with Carpenter Fisher Hartman Racing (CFHR) to give DSI families a day in their Suite to hang out with drivers and watch the cars run. To find out the date for 2016, please e-mail: [email protected].

DSI D.A.D.S. Golf Outing Each spring, the DSI D.A.D.S. host an annual golf outing from which funds raised directly benefit the mission of DSI D.A.D.S. and help to help sponsor Riley Hospital for Children’s “Camp Hi-Lite”, a one-week, outdoor-living experience for school-aged and adolescent children who happen to have Down syndrome. Community Groups Community Groups A Community Group is designed to create opportunities for families that have children with Down syndrome to network and share common interests, concerns, challenges, and information. They do this through community events, informational meetings, Facebook webpages, or playgroups. Community Groups are categorized based upon “Area Specific” (i.e. Southside, L.A.D.S.O.) or “Special Interest” (i.e. Minority Families or D.A.D.S.). Cass County (C.A.D.S.) This group was designed to bring families closer together as a community of parents that are raising children with Down syndrome in Cass County and surrounding areas. D.A.D.S. (Dads Appreciating Down syndrome) DSI D.A.D.S. monthly meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 6:30 PM. We meet at G.T. South’s Rib House is located: 5711 East 71st Street Indianapolis, Indiana 46220. GT South’s is located more or less across Binford Boulevard from George’s. East Central Indiana (ECI) The East Central Indiana group serves families living in and around Muncie. Lafayette Area Down Syndrome Organization (LADSO) The Lafayette Area Down Syndrome Organization provides information and support for families touched by Down syndrome. Local outreach includes, but is not limited to, new parent packets, personal family contacts, and group meetings and events. L.A.D.S.O. meets the 2nd Thursday of each month unless otherwise noted. Madison Hancock This is a playgroup aimed at getting children with Down syndrome and their families together with other families to play and grow together. Minority Family Down syndrome Network (MFDSN) Past MFDSN activities have been great resources for families and included a panel discussion with some of Indianapolis’ leading health care practitioners, backyard picnics, family-to-family support for challenges that arise during your loved ones life span (IEPs, medical appointments, stress, puberty, etc), and a holiday adopt-a -family party. Mom’s Night Out (MNO) Mom's Night Out is a program designed especially for moms, grandmas, aunts and loved ones of individuals with Down syndrome. The program meets at alternating restaurants to allow participants respite time, face to face interaction, networking opportunities and an evening out that they may not otherwise be able to afford. Southside The Southside parent group serves families on the Southside of Indianapolis and those that live in Johnson County and have a loved one with Down syndrome. The group is focused on family friendly activities where the whole gang is having fun and making memories! The meeting times and dates do vary, but dinner or refreshments are always provided. Wabash Valley Stars S.T.A.R.S. = Striving Toward Acceptance, Respect, and Support Mission: We are a playgroup/support group for families with a child or family member with Down syndrome, located in Terre Haute, Indiana. We believe that, together, our children can form lasting friendships, and we as parents and grandparents can talk with others who truly understand how each other feels. Linguistic Competence Training Down Syndrome Indiana will be hosting a free educational presentation, Linguistic Competence Training: Improving the Effectiveness to Communicate with Latino Communities. It provides a basic introduction to Spanish for social providers. This is a great presentation to become more culturally competent and to brush up on or learn beginner Spanish. Materials are provided free of charge. A huge thank you to the Latino Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence for providing this training. New Parent Packets in Spanish Down Syndrome Indiana provides comprehensive parent packets that contain a wealth of information to parents that have a newborn with Down syndrome or have just learned of the diagnosis before their child is born. Live, Laugh, Dance Indy Live, Laugh, Dance is dance camp for individuals with Down syndrome ages 12-35. Held at IUPUI to achieve physical activity and learn new dances. Tennis Lessons The Park Tudor Tennis Team volunteers to host a free spring and fall tennis clinic for people with Down syndrome of all ages (and siblings or friends) on Sundays from 4pm to 5pm at the Park Tudor tennis courts. Birthday Club Sign your child up for the DSI Birthday Club and you will receive a personalized birthday card in the month of your child’s birthday, a shout out on social media during the week of your child’s birthday and occasional age appropriate information that is important to know. Camp Emma Lou Camp Emma Lou provides a recreational retreat for children and their families. Each year four deserving Down Syndrome Indiana families are invited to experience this retreat weekend and all of its many benefits. Operated by the Enis Furley Foundation and located on Lake Monroe near Bloomington, IN. Camp Hi-Lite Down Syndrome Indiana through its DSI D.A.D.S. Community group and DSI D.A.D.S. Golf Outing provides $10,000 in funding to the Riley Children’s Foundation to be used toward Camp Hi-Lite. Camp Hi-Lite is a week long summer program held at Bradford Woods. The money that is donated by Down Syndrome Indiana helps to offset the costs to all campers who attend.

First Call DSI’s First Call program connects new parents to a parent that has already walked in their shoes and is trained in empathetic listening, as well as, the resources DSI has to offer. New Parent Breakfasts Down Syndrome Indiana is dedicated to supporting the needs of families and children who have Down syndrome. This can be an overwhelming time, so Down Syndrome Indiana will be offering quarterly New Parent Breakfasts. There will be two Friday breakfast dates and two Saturday breakfast dates. Parents and grandparents of newborns ages 0 to 36 months are invited to attend.
