VOLUME 29 May 2016

!

As we all know, Langhorne Open Space Land Trust loves farms! After all the first thing we saved was Heritage Farm on Green Street in historic Langhorne Borough. It soon became a beloved landmark, the site of Haunted Farms, Country Fairs and ARTFESTs. It’s famous today for its twice-yearly huge Flea Market, Concerts of Jazz, Swing, and Folk Music, the annual Christmas Tree and Wreath Sale, 100 Community Gardens, and Artists’ Studios. And all without losing its small town feel and country charm. Now, another nearby farm is at serious risk. Stone Meadows Farm is a familiar sight to anyone who travels on Route 413 between Langhorne Borough and Newtown Borough. Located within Middletown Township, it is across the road from Pennswood and George School. The buildings are set far back, so are not clearly visible from the road, but it is of significant size, the last farm of this size in southern Bucks County, consisting of 166 acres of farmland, a creek and wetlands, two houses, barns and several outbuildings. Unfortunately, it is under a conditional agreement with a developer that is proposing to cover the current farmlands with 150 houses and roadways that will funnel 1,000 cars-trips a day to the already over-congested local roads. Does Langhorne Open Space care about what happens to Stone Meadows Farm? Of course! As the only land trust with headquarters in southern Bucks County, how could we not care? But the task of preserving a property of such size and complexity is daunting. The pathway to success is not yet clear. It’s tempting to say “we’ve done enough. Let’s hope someone else will take on this task.” (Continued on Page 3)

Donations Needed for the Barn Sale The volunteers at our Farm Barn Sale report they are in need of donations. Before we detail what’s needed, let us tell you a little more about how the Barn Sale works. The Barn Sale is actually a garage sale … after all, it’s located in what used to be the garage at The Farm. While the Barn Sale is open at all of our Flea Market events, it’s also open for sale several other times throughout the year. The Barn Sale is overseen by Debbie Miele and Marge Minton, with assistance from several other volunteers, including Dave Maksymovich, Mark Kogan, Donna Gruber, Marianne Feoli, Lynn Klimek and Pat Triebl. The Barn Sale will be open (weather permitting) on Saturday May 21 (8AM – 1PM), and during the Flea Market on Saturday June 11. The Barn Sale is one of our major fundraising activities. Because all of the items sold at the Barn Sale are donated, 100% of the proceeds support the various activities of Langhorne Open Space. (See information on donations on Page 8)

(Continued from Page 1) But that’s not the way of Langhorne Open Space Land Trust. In its past, it has, more than once, taken on projects that have required more than seven years of effort, significant fundraising efforts, or once even gone to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. In an important board meeting on March 21, LOSI’s Board of Directors took a brave step forward, becoming the first organization that we know of...to commit itself to a 10-step Exploratory Strategic Plan for investigating the possible avenues to preserve Stone Meadows Farm. To our knowledge, we are also the first to set aside funds for this purpose. Board member and former LOSI president, Larry Zetterberg, who was at the meeting, suggested that his Honorary Fund be used for this purpose, and the LOSI Board decided to also commit the recent bequest from the late Fred Calkins, a long-time LOSI member and supporter. Some of the other elements of the 10-step Exploratory Strategic Plan include establishing a separate fund for those who wish to donate to the preservation of Stone Meadows Farm; forming a coalition of other organizations and agencies supporting the cause; appointing committees to attend Middletown Township meetings of Supervisors, Planning Commission and Zoning Board; and becoming a clearinghouse of information for area residents. If you are interested in helping with LOSI’s newest challenge, please email: [email protected] , or let a Board member know! “I’ll probably be the last person to enjoy this trail today,” I said to myself as I approached the West Watson ! Avenue entrance to Catawissa Creek Nature Preserve. The late afternoon sun was slanting low in the sky, shedding a golden glow on the new, budding leaves of the forest trees overhead. But I had taken only a few steps down the ! winding trail, when I saw I was mistaken. Someone was approaching, and as we neared each other, I realized it was Valerie Gray. Valerie may be a newcomer to Langhorne Borough, but she is already a member and volunteer for ! LOSI Land Trust.

What Is Langhorne Open Space Land Trust?

!

It was Valerie’s first time through the nature preserve, and her enthusiasm was contagious. “It’s incredible,” she said. “A friend told me about this trail. At first I wondered if I had the right place, but the benches and sign on Maple ! Avenue convinced me that I had found the entrance to Catawissa. I walked across the grassy area to the sign at the ! trailhead, and just as soon as I entered the forest, it was as if I had entered another world. The sounds of the town and cars receded. Suddenly, all I heard were songbirds and woodpeckers. So peaceful and serene. A lot of things have ! been happening in my life lately, and I really needed to find some peace and serenity. What I can’t believe is that I found it right here….right in the middle of town. I’m so glad I found this place.” !

As we parted ways to continue on our respective walks, I couldn’t help thinking how exciting it is when we can discover and be healed and refreshed by the finding of the beauty of nature –sometimes where we least expect it…sometimes practically in our own back yards.

Langhorne Open Space, Inc. (LOSI) was founded in 1984 with the mission of saving open space in the local area. Through the efforts of its dedicated members, LOSI has become a Land Trust, having purchased protective conservation easements on various private properties and public viewscapes. LOSI Land Trust is best known for raising the funds to protect and maintain open space, such as the popular Langhorne Heritage Farm and the quiet, contemplative Catawissa Creek Nature Preserve. !

LOSI continues to manage both today for the Borough of Langhorne.

VOLUME 29 May 2016
