PLANNING ON SUCCESS

“Don’t confuse being busy with being successful.”

IN THIS ISSUE: MARKET WATCH UPDATES. Our Retail Operations Center reports on price increases, decreases, rebates and new product info.

This is one of my favorite quotes. It is easy in the construction industry to be busy. It’s not so easy to be successful. Each year we like to reflect on the past and plan for the future. Planning is powerful, but easily set to the side. We are all quite busy just getting through the day.

President’s Corner

In the first quarter of every year we like to share our ‘Joint Business Planning’ data with our customers. It is a chance for you and your sales representative to stop and look at your purchasing patterns from the past few years as a basis for discussing priorities for the current year.

KEVIN HANCOCK APPOINTED TO U.S. MANUFACTURING COUNCIL The Manufacturing Council works to ensure regular communication between government and the manufacturing sector and provides a forum for discussing and proposing solutions to industry-related problems.

I continue to believe that the single biggest opportunity for efficiency, accuracy, productivity and profitability improvements for both builders and their material supplier is JOINT PLANNING. For me, JOINT PLANNING means just what it says. It means looking at all the ways in which our success is mutually connected and discussing strategies and actions steps that will make both our businesses more successful. • • • • • •

Finding better product solutions for your specific needs. Increasing accuracy of orders. Reducing the volume of paperwork and job site interruptions. Designing more efficient or innovative homes. Keeping up on the latest product developments. Learning more about the specialty services for online billing, delivery notification, wall panels, custom pine products, kitchen design services, window maintenance & repairs.

SIMPSON AND AROOSTOOK TRUSS TEAM UP FOR TRAINING. Join us the morning of March 19th for informative product training. RSVP required, as space is filling up fast!

These are just a few of the subjects that can benefit us together. I love our industry because it is a team sport. We can only be successful if you are successful, so we need to be highly focused on your priorities. In addition, we feel it is hard for a builder to be successful without an aligned and efficient supplier. We share a very important relationship and once a year, at least, it is worth sitting down to think carefully and strategically. Please look for this opportunity with your Hancock Lumber sales representative and thank you if you’ve already met! Becoming even more successful together is a subject worth working on! KEVIN HANCOCK APPOINTED TO U.S. MANUFACTURING COUNCIL The Secretary of Commerce recently appointed Hancock Lumber’s President + CEO, Kevin Hancock, to the national Manufacturing Council. The Council was established in 2004 to serve as the principal private sector advisory body to the Secretary of Commerce on matters relating to the U.S. manufacturing industry. The council meets four times per year with the Secretary, advising her on strategic issues facing American manufacturers. Hancock Lumber is the only lumber manufacturer represented in the group. Secretary Pritzker recently stated in a press release, “The Department of Commerce continues to make investments that will keep our manufacturing sector on the cutting edge of innovation, including two new Commerce-led National Network for Manufacturing Innovation institutes, proposed in the President’s fiscal year 2016 budget. I look forward to working together with the new and returning Manufacturing Council members, whose unique expertise and perspective will be integral to our efforts to boost the economy and create U.S. jobs.” The Manufacturing Council and its sub-committees work to ensure regular communication between government and the manufacturing sector and provide a forum for discussing and proposing solutions to industry-related problems. Council members advise the Secretary of Commerce on government policies and programs that affect U.S. manufacturing and recommend ways to ensure that the United States remains the preeminent destination for investment in manufacturing across the globe. Kevin recently commented on this new leadership role, “There are a lot of great manufacturing companies represented on the Council so I am looking forward to the networking, idea sharing and learning opportunities that will be created. I am glad that, through Hancock Lumber, a manufacturer from Maine and the forest products industry will be represented in this group. Hopefully we can collectively have a positive impact on federal policy and direction regarding the growth of manufacturing in this country.” Congratulations to Kevin on becoming one of 30 private sector leaders appointed to the Manufacturing Council!
