2016 San Diego Social Venture Partners Grant Guidelines Sector Focus: Human trafficking and Child/Sexual/Domestic Violence

Focus Area We seek applicants in the following two focus areas1: 1. Nonprofits involved in preventing, reducing or mitigating the negative effects of human trafficking on individuals or communities in the greater San Diego area. Note: Human trafficking is defined as the act of recruiting, harboring, transporting, providing, or obtaining a person for compelled labor or commercial sex acts through the use of force, fraud, or coercion. 2. Nonprofits involved in preventing, reducing or mitigating the negative effects of child, sexual or domestic violence on individuals or communities in the greater San Diego area.

1. Introduction: San Diego Social Venture Partners (SDSVP) is a 501(c)(3) philanthropic membership organization that provides funding and pro-bono consulting to strengthen local nonprofits and our community. We are comprised of caring and informed San Diegans with a passionate desire to give back through engaged strategic giving and volunteering, ultimately making our social sector more efficient, effective, and impactful. Each year, SDSVP selects organizations (called Investees) to fund and support through pro-bono consulting from our members, called “Partners”. This year, SDSVP will fund organizations working on the above Focus Area. For definitions and a full list of eligibility requirements, please see section 3 below. We believe that we can help nonprofit organizations become as effective as possible in delivering their programs and services by helping them to build organizational capacity. We define organizational capacity building as the development of core skills, management practices, strategies, and systems to enhance an organization’s effectiveness, sustainability and ability to fulfill its mission. SDSVP supports capacity building for selected organizations (Investees) by providing cash grants and matching our Partners’ professional expertise with their needs. Our pro-bono consulting services – 1

which often accompany cash grants – are often more valuable to the organization than the dollar figure alone. SDSVP seeks to develop true partnerships with nonprofit organizations. SDSVP’s model is not appropriate or desirable for every non-profit. Our approach is unique and most non-profits are not accustomed to a funder being involved with the “guts” of an organization. For those non-profits that are willing to engage in this type of relationship, SDSVP offers a compelling opportunity for financial and organizational capacity building support. Since our founding in 2001, we have contributed $2.5 million in grants, $10.7 million in co-funding and in-kind services, and over 100,000 volunteer hours to nonprofits in San Diego, which translates into thousands of lives transformed. 2. Overall Funding Pool: SDSVP grants are the result of a pooled fund from SDSVP members, which we call “Partners”. SDSVP Partners are individuals who have paid the minimum dues required to be a member of SDSVP. It is these pooled dues that comprise our grant monies. SDSVP has a maximum of $75,000 available to grant up to two organizations in San Diego during this funding track (February 2016-July 2016). As mentioned above, in addition to the grant, we also seek to contribute the time and expertise of our Partners to support the group(s) selected. The grant will be disbursed over the same period of time that SDSVP contributes pro-bono consulting, up to two years. Applicants can choose to apply for one or two year engagements. Additionally, once an organization has been selected, they will be eligible for re-investment in future years, based on their performance during this project period and available funds. 3. Minimum qualifications: All applicants must meet the below minimum qualifications. a. Your organization is a registered 501(c)(3) or is fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)(3). b. Your mission or a primary program (comprising at least 25% of your budget) focuses on helping prevent, reduce or mitigate the negative effects of human trafficking or child, sexual or domestic violence on individuals or communities in the greater San Diego area (see definitions in Section 1 above). c. Part 3: Organizational Capacity Assessment These 3-5 organizations will utilize our Organizational Capacity Assessment Tool (OCAT), a capacity assessment tool developed in collaboration with McKinsey and Company. This is a special opportunity to work with a trained SDSVP Partner who will meet with you and your Board of Directors to prioritize capacity building areas and identify the kind of volunteer assistance from SDSVP that might benefit your organization. Management staff and several board members will independently and confidentially provide their assessment of the organization. The aggregated results of these assessments will inform a discussion facilitated by an SVP Partner. The purpose of the OCAT is to help identify gaps where increased organizational capacity could help you increase your impact. Many of our prior Investees have told us that going through this process was one of the most useful things that they did with SVP, as it helped them reflect inward and prioritize areas to address. You will take the self-assessment and convene a meeting for the facilitated discussion about the assessment results between May 20 and June 30 (approx. 6 weeks). Part 4: Financial Statements These 3-5 organizations will be asked to supply full financial statements by June 15th. Part 5: Final Selection SDSVP Partners will select one or two organizations to fund for up to 2 years each and will allocate the available $75,000 accordingly.

5. Award Notices a. Individual SDSVP Partners will collectively decide how to allocate the grant funds and will select one or two organizations. b. Final notice to those organizations selected for funding and those organizations that are not selected for funding will be given by email by July 18th. 6. What is in it for me? a. Time Efficient Funding Process: We will not waste the time of hundreds of organizations by requesting long proposals, and then only funding a handful. Following review of the LOI’s, only 4-8 organizations will be requested to continue through our process and one or two will be funded. b. Free OCAT assessment: 3-5 organizations will be selected to take the OCAT. This assessment will allow you to better understand the areas where development of organizational capacity could help you achieve greater impact. Doing this assessment with both Board and staff members will help multiple stakeholders be on the same page at the same time. Other Pg. 4
