Do you know enough about “Hospice”? One year ago, Laurie Callari had a general understanding of hospice care. She has friends who volunteer, and she and her husband David had been impressed by what they’d learned about Hospice of Holland’s services during the May 2011 Celebration event. Laurie and David live in Holland, but often make the seven hour trip home to Buffalo, NY, to visit their close-knit Italian families. Their family included Nane, Laurie’s beloved grandmother (Italian grandmothers are called Nane or Nonnie), who lived with Laurie’s aunt and uncle.

that would help the aunt and uncle’s immediate care giving needs, they were disappointed to learn the hospice had less to offer than expected. They later learned that there was at least one more hospice that may have been a better fit. Sadly, Nane died within days of her decline. She and her family never did receive the benefits of hospice care. Looking back, Laurie sees what she didn’t know about hospice providers: “I didn’t know there was more than one local hospice. I thought all hospices were connected and that all offered the same services as Hospice of Holland. I’m sharing my family’s story to help other families. Everyone should know that there is more than one hospice out there and that they’re not all the same.”

Grateful for Hospice of Holland:

Laurie Callari with her grandmother

Last fall, 99-year old Nane suddenly took a turn for the worse. She was confused and could no longer walk or rise from her chair. Her daughter and son-in-law could not lift her. Although they were committed to caring for their Nane at home, they needed help. Remembering the wide range of services available from Hospice of Holland, particularly home health aides and volunteer companionship services that ease the burden of caregivers, Laurie assured her aunt that help would be available from their local hospice.

Quality. Compassion. Care. Why Hospice of Holland? Dear Friends: Patients, families, and professional caregivers frequently ask me, “Why choose Hospice of Holland?” For some, the question comes from confusion over the many hospice providers that currently serve Holland and the lakeshore area. Torrey Husmann, MHA Often, this question comes as the Executive Director individuals asking are researching the benefits of hospice care for a loved one they learn is facing end-of-life. In response, I describe the many highlights of our program. I may mention our 200+ trained volunteers, our commitment towards the creation of customized disease specific programs like “Still Me” for advanced dementia care, or our state-of-the-art 18-bedroom Hospice House residence. But the message that I always try to instill is that of our core mission: To provide the most compassionate and highest quality end-of-life care through physical, emotional, and spiritual support. Not only has it been our mission for over 30 years, it has been our passion. Read further and see that passion in our staff, our volunteers, and in the way we serve our patients. It can

be seen at all levels of the organization. We take pride in our facilities, our dedicated volunteers, our commitment towards dignity and comfort and our ability to create an exceptional patient care experience for all we serve. There is one other thing we are passionate about and that is our bond with our community. Thank you for inviting us into your homes and trusting us with the care of your loved ones. Over and over again we hear, “we wish we would have called you sooner. It was a positive experience.” In short, it comes down to quality, compassion, and care. That is why you should choose Hospice of Holland and that is how you should measure other hospices. And because I can’t say it enough - we could not operate this high quality program without the support of our donors. Month after month, year after year, generous individuals, businesses and organizations make quality, care and compassion possible for our patients and their loved ones. Thank you!

Helping People Feel Comfortable To Hospice House housekeeper Carey Knoepke, housekeeping is more than keeping the house clean. “A clean house has physical and psychological effects, helping people feel comfortable, cared for, happy and healthy.  Like the nursing staff and other volunteers, good housekeepers also put ‘heart’ into the Hospice House, so families may keep this home in their hearts as a positive memory.” Although Carey is the sole staff housekeeper at the Hospice House, each week 2-3 volunteer housekeepers spend an average of 8 hours cleaning the public areas of the Hospice House. Together, their work keeps the Hospice House pleasant, user-friendly, and comforting for patients, guests and staff.

Volunteers Are Priceless

These and many other individual, group and business efforts make a wide range of services and high quality care possible for individuals and families at end-of-life. Thank you!

Our annual Volunteer Appreciation Event was held Tuesday, April 17 (during National Volunteer Week), at Alpen Rose, to celebrate the outstanding services our volunteers provide throughout the year. The theme, “Volunteers are Priceless”, exemplified our debt to our volunteers for their generous support and commitment to our program.

The night was full of joy and fun, including a Hospice of Holland version of Jeopardy hosted by our own Torrey Husmann. We recognized volunteers for their years of service (3 volunteers were honored for 30 years with HOH), hours served in 2012, and volunteers at the “top of their game” in specialized areas. The night concluded with the announcement of our 2011 Volunteer of the Year. We were delighted to introduce Donna Matula, a volunteer for Hospice of Holland since 2008, as the deserving recipient of that distinguished award. Donna is a retired nurse who graciously accepts a wide range of volunteer jobs. Her kind and patient spirit uplifts all in her presence. Out of more than 300 hours served in 2011, one example of her service is the weekly companionship Donna provided for a woman with Alzheimer’s disease. The patient’s daughter was often present during the visits and seemed to benefit equally from the companionship and cheer Donna brought into their home. The daughter called Donna “a godsend,” saying no level of appreciation for her services would be too high. Thank you Donna.

Hospice of Holland volunteers Shiloh and Jerry Hill’s book is out. In Shiloh Speaks: A Therapy Dog’s Tales of Unconditional Love, Shiloh tells of his experiences as a “Hospet.” The gentle and perceptive thirteen-year old golden retriever has made more than 1300 visits in West Michigan and in their winter community of Stuart, Florida. Shiloh describes many of the visits he and Jerry have made in hospice settings, including Hospice of Holland’s Camp Hope for grieving children, and Hospice House where Shiloh sees his favorite hospice doc, Roger Phillips. Shiloh and Jerry will donate a portion of the book’s proceeds to Hospice of Holland and Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart, Florida. The book is an easy and enjoyable read. It can be purchased at Reader’s World in Holland, or through amazon.com, bn.com, or at Shiloh’s website www.shilohspeaksthebook.com. At the end of the book, Shiloh challenges his readers to pick up the gauntlet and get involved with helping others. His personal goal is “to touch as many lives as I can during the remainder of my years and value all of my experiences.” Could any of us set a better goal for ourselves?

Quality. Compassion. Care. Make the Call Deciding to call hospice can be one of the most difficult decisions of our life. We understand. We also want you to know that most patients and patient families tell us they only wish they’d called Hospice of Holland sooner. When you do call, a compassionate admissions professional will provide a comforting presence and a smooth transition into hospice care. To learn how Hospice of Holland can help you or your loved one, or to schedule a visit, please call our admissions team at 616.396.2972.

Advanced Dementia & Congestive Heart Failure - Specialized Hospice Care Disease-specific care programs reflect Hospice of Holland’s commitment to meet the expectations of all patients, especially those with challenging symptoms. In 2011, Hospice of Holland’s first disease-specific care program was introduced. “Still Me” was designed to meet the unique end-of-life care needs of patients with advanced dementia and their caregivers. You can watch a short video depicting the Still Me program’s specialized care for patients with advanced dementia and their caregivers, at www.hollandhospice.org, or call 396-2972 for more information. This summer we will introduce our newest diseasespecific care program. “Take Heart” will meet the needs of those facing the challenges of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). Watch for program details in the fall Heartbeat, or on our website, or call 396-2972 to learn more.

Caring for the People Who Care Our staff is devoted to providing the best care to our community. Likewise, we are committed to providing a caring and healthy work environment for our valued staff. To do so, Hospice of Holland kicked off Wellness Challenge 2012 for all staff in February. This challenge will run until December 31st, 2012.

Please come for a tour of our beautiful Hospice House facility, where individuals seeking hospice care receive hospital-like care in a home-like setting. Tours begin each Wednesday at noon and end with lunch supplied by our chef and the culinary team of Creative Dining Services. Please R.S.V.P. with the number attending by calling 616.396.2972 before 5:00 p.m. on the preceding Friday. To arrange a private tour of the Hospice House, please contact the Hospice House Director at 616.355.5750, or the Business Development Director at 616.355.5520.

Nearly 65% of our staff signed up to participate in the Challenge, which includes health screenings, health education, fitness activities and wellness contests to keep it fun. Understanding that a healthy staff equals reduced absenteeism, higher productivity, reduced use of health care benefits and increased morale and loyalty, this is a win-win program for Hospice of Holland, our employees, and the individuals we serve.
