Present: John Bowman, Mike Flinn, Mohsen Chitsaz, Jean-Marie Makang, Beth Kenney, Seán Henry (notetaker) Welcome and Introductions: The group welcomed back newly re-elected members Mike Flinn and Jean-Makang Summer School Enrollments John shared the Summer 2012 Enrollment Monitor Official Census Data current as of July 20, 2012. • •

There was a total unduplicated headcount of 1453 students enrolled during Summer 2012 (total head count of 1293 in Summer 2011). Out of the 1453 total headcount, there were 562 FTEs (490 FTEs during Summer 2011).

The group also reviewed the official Summer 2012 Online Synopsis compiled on July 22, 2012. • • •

Of the 1453 total headcount, 1138 were students enrolled in online courses (928 during Summer 2011). 78.3% of all Summer 2012 enrollees took online courses. Trends in growth: All on the online programs are flourishing, especially the MBA and RN/BSN programs. However, enrollment in the online M. Ed courses is less than last year due to new state teaching requirements.

Courses are in for 2013 Intersession. Action Items for AY 2012-2013 • •



Revise/update DEAG charter Revise/update Online Education Procedures, Guidelines and Information o The group can start this after Cindy Hay conducts the October Faculty Online Training and gives feedback (some of the online teaching requirements have changed) Explore distant education assessment (such as the Quality Matters Rubric) in preparation for the next periodic review report and campus accreditation visit in 2016

Other Issues • •

Courses are in for 2013 Intersession Jean-Marie and Mohsen discussed the problem of “FX” students who quit participating early in online classes but nevertheless fill out class evaluations at the end of the course.

DEAG Meeting Friday, Feb. 22, 3 PM Pullen 139 Present: John Bowman, Mike Flinn, Mohsen Chitsaz, Jean-Marie Makang, Seán Henry (notetaker) Report Discussion: Online Student Survey Results and Trends: Summer and Intersession The meeting agenda consisted of discussion of survey results and trends for online students in summer and intersession courses from 2003 to 2012. The report document was distributed to members via email before the meeting. Discussion included the following points: •

A majority of students taking online courses were undergraduates 81%), particularly seniors (33% of the 81%)



Females accounted for 62% of survey respondents, versus 38% for males



Most survey respondents (44%) had not taken an online course before, while 18% had taken four or more online courses previously



Most survey respondents (67%) thought technical support was readily available when they needed it, only 5% did not



Eighty-three percent (83%) of survey respondents either agreed or strongly agreed that the online course delivery method (course material and layout) was conducive to learning, but 7% disagreed



Seventy-seven percent (77%) of respondents thought the online instructor did an outstanding or very good job, 16% said the instructor was average, and 7% felt the instructor was below or far below average on effectiveness



Seventy-two percent (72%) of respondents indicated a high level of quality interaction existed in the course



Seventy-eight percent (78%) of respondents indicated that they learned just as much or more in an online course than in a traditional course (24% indicated they learned more in an online course).



Forty-five percent (47%) of respondents indicated they would definitely take another online course, with an additional 38% indicating they would enroll in another online course if it fits their needs; 8% indicated they did not plan to every take another online course
