Program Description The Health Care Assistant (HCA): Introduction to Practice Program (on-line/distance delivery) provides an introduction to the role of the Health Care Assistant within the British Columbia health care system and is based on the HCA: Introduction to Practice course from the Provincial Health Care Assistant curriculum. Students will be introduced to the healthcare team and the roles and functions of the HCA in British Columbia. Concepts related to culture & diversity and effective communication strategies will be explored. Students will have opportunities to develop self-reflective skills required for competent practice and will be introduced to effective job search approaches. This program may appeal to the following applicants; 1) Individuals seeking registration as a Health Care Assistant with the BC Care Aid Registry (http://www.cachwr.bc.ca/Registrants.aspx) who are; •

Internationally Educated Health Professional (IEHP)



Graduate of a HCA program within Canada excluding British Columbia

2) Individuals interested in Health Care Assistant education seeking a short duration introduction to HCA studies. A student who successfully completes this course may use this course for prior learning assessment credit if enrolling in the Saint Elizabeth Health Career College, Health Care Assistant Diploma Program within one year of course completion.

Program Length and Structure This is a self-paced, online program and is comprised of 14 learning modules. Students must complete all program components within a maximum of 6 months from date of their program start (if a student requires extra time, a one-month extension is available at no additional cost). Students will have 24/7 online access to the course and be supported by a program specific distance education instructor. Students may also access in-person support at our distance education computer lab located at our Vancouver campus.

Program Learning Objectives

Display an understanding of culture and diversity in Canada today. Identify risk factors for and prevention of abuse. Apply self-reflection, and self – appraisal processes in order to recognize and respond to own selfdevelopment needs as a care provider. Confidently conduct a job-search process

Program Evaluation Methods and Completion Credential. Students will complete an on-line quiz at the end of each learning module and a mid-term and final exam. Students will also complete two course assignments for a total mark of 100%. Students must obtain a minimum total cumulative pass mark of 70% for successful course completion. All students will receive a written progress report prior to completing 30% of the program. A certificate of course completion will be issued to successful graduates. Role of the Health Care Assistant (HCA) in British Columbia The role of the HCA may vary depending on the specific employment setting and may include the following responsibilities: • Works and communicates with all members of the multi-disciplinary health team • Follows and contributes to the client’s care plan • Promotes and utilizes health and safety regulations and initiatives for a safe working environment • Assists with walking, movement and positioning; with or without assistive devices • Assists with mechanical and physical lifts and/or transfers in a safe and ethical manner • Assists with all aspects of personal hygiene and grooming, including perineal care, toileting, bathing, dressing and laundry • Assists with meal preparation, grocery shopping, feeding, dietary planning, food handling • Answers call bells and responds to client requests • Checks and records vital signs • Teaches/assists with developing life skills • Assists with range of motion exercise and other rehabilitative measures • Implements infection control measures to maintain a clean and safe working environment • Provides emotional, spiritual and social support services to clients and their families • Assists with Delegated Tasks including, medication management, vital signs, glucometer reading, oxygen therapy, hot and cold applications, wound care, ostomy care, enteral nutrition • Provides holistic support for palliative care and hospice patients and their families • Observes and reports clinical and treatment findings, behavioural changes and changes in ongoing conditions • Maintains computer and/or paper records and documents procedures

Admission Requirements Students enrolling in HCA: Introduction to Practice Program (On-line/Distance Delivery) must meet the minimum requirements for general admission to Saint Elizabeth Health Career College;

PART A: Applicants must: • • • •

Be at least 18 years of age; Be able to legally study in Canada Proof of Grade 10 graduation or mature student status Proof of meeting English language competency requirements (see detailed description below)

PART B: English Language Requirements for Entrance to the HCA-ESL Diploma Program In accordance with Saint Elizabeth Health Career College, Language Proficiency Policy, Native and Non-Native speaker of English is defined as; a)

Native speakers of English*: Are those who have been educated in an English-speaking environment (in Canada, outside of Quebec, or another country with an English language system/institution) for a minimum of seven (7) years.

b) Non-native speakers of English: Are those who have not been educated in an English-speaking environment or who have been educated in Canada or in English-speaking environment for less than seven (7) years.

* To achieve functional language proficiency and be termed as a native English speaker, one would require seven (7) years of education in an English-speaking environment (these years could be acquired in either a consecutive or non-consecutive manner). If, however, these years were all consecutive and inclusive of only secondary or post-secondary education in an English-speaking environment, the number of years to meet the native English speaker requirement could be achieved in a period of 4 years.

1. Proof of completion of Grade 10 English; or 2. College courses determined to be equivalent to completion of Grade 10 English (or higher) by post-secondary institutions. Applicants must produce transcripts as evidence of completion. A minimum of a C grade is acceptable. 3. Canadian Adult Achievement Test (CAAT): Reading Comprehension 35/50 Spelling 23/32 4. Language Placement Index (LPI): The three individual scores (Sentence Structure, English Usage, and Reading Comprehension) must total a minimum of 20, out of a maximum possible score of 40. Essay level of 4, with a minimum essay score of 24/40 5. Accuplacer: Grade 10 level or higher

1. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) -- test must be within the last two years. IBT only: Overall score of 64 with no score lower than 17 in Speaking and Listening and no score lower than 15 in Reading and Writing. 2. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic -test must be within the last two years: Overall score of 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in Speaking and Listening and no score lower than 5.0 in Reading and Writing. 3. Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLB PT) -- test must be within the last six months: Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5 and Writing 5. 4. Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) Academic Test version: Aggregate score of 3H or better, with 3H or better in Speaking and Listening and 3L or better in Reading and Writing 5. Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) Overall Score of 50, with no section less than 40.

If the student fails to meet the minimum admission requirements, such requirements may not be waived by either Saint Elizabeth Health Career College or the student.
