Treasure Valley YOUTH Theater, Inc. and the Meridian Arts Commission are pleased to announce auditions for "Disney's THE LION KING, JR." Auditions are held at 703 N. Main St. in downtown Meridian. PLEASE ENTER FROM THE BACK SIDE OF THE BUILDING facing The Bank of the Cascades. CALLING ALL ACTORS IN GRADES 4th-9th Note: the age restriction is required by Disney and the licensing agency and will be strictly enforced. Young performers in 4th-9th grades are invited to audition for "Disney's THE LION KING, JR." presented by Treasure Valley YOUTH Theater, Inc. and the Meridian Arts Commission. If you will be in 4th grade, or 4th grade equivalent, by Dec. 12, 2016, then you may audition. If you are enrolled in 10th grade or higher, or equivalent, you may not audition. There are challenging acting, singing and dancing roles for 40 performers. About the play: The African savannah comes to life with Simba, Rafiki and an unforgettable cast of characters as they journey from Pride Rock to the jungle... and back again, in this inspiring, coming-of-age tale. About the program: Treasure Valley YOUTH Theater, Inc. empowers youth through performing arts programs. 40 youth will be selected to participate in a theater-arts/leadership training program and rehearsal process. Youth will be involved in many aspects of the show including fundraising, marketing, creating props, costumes and more! About the roles we are casting: - Rafiki: A wise mandrill who acts as healer of the Pridelands and guides Simba on his journey home. She is an omniscient character, evincing an air of mystery. Rafiki has significant solos and leads the African chants throughout the show, must be a confident performer with a strong singing voice. Vocal range top: C5 Vocal range bottom: A3 - Ensemble/Grasslands/Jungle: The ensemble plays various inhabitants of the Pridelands, such as giraffes, elephants, antelopes, wildebeest, and other creatures. - Mufasa: The strong, honorable, and wise lion who leads the Pridelands. Mufasa should command respect and also show tenderness with his son, Simba. Vocal range top: C5 Vocal range bottom: B3 - Sarabi: A featured lioness, Mufasa's mate, and Simba's mother. Sarabi has a few key speaking lines for an actor who can deliver the care and command of a queen. - Zazu: The anxious yet loyal assistant to Mufasa who is always busy trying to do his duty. Zazu's lyrics are spoken rather than sung, and the role can be played by a boy or girl. - Scar: The antagonist of the show, overcome with jealousy of his brother, Mufasa, and nephew, Simba. Coldhearted and wickedly intelligent, he will stop at nothing to become king of the

Vocal range top: A4 Vocal range bottom: A3 - Young Simba: The protagonist of the story, is an adventurous and endearing cub who can't wait to be king of the Pridelands. Simba is playful, energetic, and naive, but after his father Mufasa's death, Simba struggles with shame and his destiny. Need a strong singer and dynamic performer in this role. Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: B3 - Simba: Grows from a cub to lion in "Hakuna Matata." Older Simba has more complex moments as he reunites with Nala, mourns his father, and returns to confront Scar. Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: B3 - Lionesses: The fierce hunters of the Pridelands and featured in "The Lioness Hunt," "The Mourning," and "Shadowland." These actors should be strong singers and dancers, as the material is challenging. - Young Nala: A courageous lion and Young Simba's best friend. She is not afraid to speak her mind. While Young Nala does sing a little, need a strong female performer who can portray this confident cub. Vocal range top: C5 Vocal range bottom: A3 - Nala: Grows from a cub to a lioness before she confronts Scar. Must be strong vocally. Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: G3 - Sarafina: A featured lioness and Nala's mother. She has one short, spoken line. - Shenzi: One of Scar's hyenas who plot to take over the Pridelands. She is the sassy one of the trio and is always looking out for herself. She should be able to laugh loudly and long, as well as be menacing to Young Simba and Young Nala. - Banzai: A slick yet childish hyena who works for Scar. He would be the leader of the group if hyenas weren't so lazy. Looking for an outgoing and confident actor who can portray nastiness and gruffness. - Ed: The third member of Scar's trio of lackeys. He has a loud, cackling laugh that is his only form of communication. Seeking an actor who can laugh unabashedly and communicate through physicality and facial expressions rather than words. This role can be played by a boy or girl. - Hyenas: Scar's army, helping carry out his evil plot to take over the Pridelands. Hyenas are mangy, mindless creatures who sing in "Be Prepared." - Timon: An outcast meerkat who lives in the jungle with Pumbaa. He is afraid of his own shadow, but pretends to be the confident, relaxed leader of the duo. Timon is one of the funniest characters in the show and must be played by a charismatic actor who understands comic timing. This part can be played by a boy or a girl. Vocal range top: B4 Vocal range bottom: B3 - Pumbaa: A kindhearted, sensitive warthog who enjoys his simple life of grubs and relaxation. Looking for a boy or girl who can portray this loveable and loyal friend to Timon and Simba with deadpan humor. Vocal range top: G5 Vocal range bottom: D4 Performances: Performances of "Disney's THE LION KING, JR." will be presented March 18, 2pm & 7pm at Mountain View High School's auditorium AND March 31, (tentative) 2pm and (definitely) 7pm & April 1, 2pm at Nampa Civic Center. Cast members are expected to be available for all performances. BONUS OPPORTUNITY: Cast members will have an opportunity to choose to travel, by bus, to Salt Lake City, UT March 28-29 to see Broadway on Tour's production of "The Lion King". There will be a travel fee associated with this opportunity (not to exceed $200 per person) and seats will be limited. “Disney’s THE LION KING, JR.” Audition Information Fees: There is no fee to audition for "Disney's THE LION KING, JR." If you are cast, there is a $65 materials fee, HOWEVER, part of a TVYT experience is learning how to speak passionately about your art and ask for support from area businesses. This exercise teaches valuable life skills and engages our local community in our programs. Individuals cast in the show will be trained to seek sponsorships of $200 to support their participation and the overall production. If sponsorship is not available, cast members will be asked to pay the $65 materials fee. The materials fee includes a show T-shirt, personal script and over 75 hours of theater arts, leadership and performance training with Treasure Valley YOUTH Theater, Inc. professionals. No one will be turned away for inability to pay. (Note: the $15 increase for this program versus our previous programs is attributed to the increased fee we are charged to produce this production, added performances and an additional venue, plus an increase in hours of rehearsal and training time.) How to audition: If you'd like to audition, please register for an appointment through our online event portal linked on our website. WE CAN ONLY ACCEPT 110 AUDITION APPOINTMENTS. Please DO NOT register for an appointment unless you are serious about the commitment required to participate. We will have copies of the form available if you do not have access to a printer. Please arrive 10 minutes early to your scheduled appointment. PAY ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Auditioners need to come prepared to sing the "Circle of Life Finale". Links to the rehearsal tracks are available on the event portal and on our website. PRACTICE!!! • If you are auditioning for a role that sings solo, you will be required to sing this song solo at your audition. • If you are interested in ensemble or choral singing roles, you will be asked to sing in small groups at your audition. You will also be taught a short dance routine. There is a lot of movement and dancing in "Disney's THE LION KING, JR." and we are specifically looking for performers who can move like animals you would find on the African savannah. Dress in comfortable movement clothes and wear shoes that stay on your feet (no flip flops or sandals). Auditions last about 1 hour and are closed to outside observers. We do have a waiting area open to parents.
