JCA Young Concert Artists Series

Born in Gyumri, Armenia in 1992, Narek Arutyunian was 10 when he took the clarinet in his hands for the first time. At 16, he graduated from Central Music School and went on to study at Moscow State Conservatory from 2009 to 2010. In 2010, Narek studied at Queens College, CUNY with Evgeny Petrov and since 2011, he has studied at the Juilliard School with Charles Neidich. Narek has given recitals at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, the Louvre in Paris, Beijing’s Forbidden City Concert Hall and New York’s Merkin Hall. A JAway mini concert with Narek will be held at the Players Senior Center on Monday, February 9, at 11 am. Call Katie at ext. 231 for more information.

Violinist Stephen Waarts has been praised for “playing with technical command and a totally natural sense of musical drama” (Strings Magazine). A winner of the 2013 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, Stephen received the Walker Teagle Prize which sponsored his New York debut. He is the current Frank S. Bayley Fellow at the Curtis Institute and is also an accomplished mathematician.

The Photographs of Marcy Appelbaum Reindl | February 6 to 25 Marcy is a Pulitzer Prize nominee and Florida State and National Award winning contract photographer. While working for The Florida Times Union as a photojournalist, Marcy captured the image of a mid-air plane crash, earning her a Pulitzer nomination. She will be exhibiting a body of work from her ongoing L’Dor V’Dor series which documents children learning about their 3,000 year old Jewish heritage. The Paintings of Jan Koss | February 27 to March 25 Jan began painting the beautiful scenes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Yosemite National Park as a diversion from raising three children and tending to the demands of being a Navy wife. Now that she is settled in Florida, Jan’s love of vibrant color is reflected in her capture of the natural beauty of landscape, flower and beachscape paintings.

The Magic Wardrobe Theatre had the privilege of supporting the Duval County school system’s STEAM program, which ensures every child has the “whole child” experience through exposure to activities outside of the core curriculum. In participation, the Magic Wardrobe Theatre produced a multi-cultural program featuring the folktales of various countries. The show, How the Animals Got Their Colors, was performed by our professional troupe, including Sam Fisher, Cody Russell, Brooks Anne Mereidierks, Patric Robinson, Amy Allen Farmer, Craig Wickless and Shelly Higgins Hughes. It’s always an honor and a privilege to help expand the minds of our young people by educating through art!
