6 castles, 6 event programmes, 6 stories to be told The presence of many castles, residences and historical dwellings around the Bolzano basin has led us to think of a new tourism offer: Six castles, six programmes, six stories to tell which unfold and at times overlap as we progress from their very beginnings through the centuries to our modern day. The initiative in question will focus on three days of events and happenings so you will be able to take an inqusitive historical look at times gone by, or take in a show or exhibition, or just simply enjoy a good meal in a somewhat different setting.

Coordination: Tourism Board Bolzano Bozen

For information on the detailled program: Tourist Office Bolzano Bozen, piazza Walther Platz 8, I–39100 Bolzano Bozen tel. +39 0471 307 000, [email protected] Editor: Tourism Board Bolzano Bozen Textes: participating castles and Tourism Board Bolzano Bozen Pictures: participating castles, picture of R. Messner/Tony Federico, cover/Robert Eberhoefer Printing: Litografica Editrice Saturnia (TN)

Each castle has prepared particular themed events: some to do with medieval times, others organised as round tables and meetings with international celebrities, and others again focussed on music, cuisine, and other delights which the ancient walls may propose. A shuttle service from Piazza Walther in Bolzano Bozen will ensure direct transport links to the castles. Only in the case of Castle Appiano will it be required to walk the final part to achieve access. Whoever completes all the itineraries can take part in an entertaining game and win attractive prizes.

Roncolo Castle

Frescoes and illustrations Castle Roncolo, on the outskirts of Bolzano, boasts the largest cycle of profane frescoes from the Middle Ages in the whole world; amongst these, it also gives ample space to the Arthurian cycle, depicting King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Roncolo may be likened to an Arthurian Castle. And quite rightly so for its frescoes testify that the legends on the King of Albion (ca. 1390) are part of a common, literary heritage, present even in our region. However, not only Knights and Ladies enthuse about these courtly legends, also do the town’s bourgeoisies, and the townsfolk in general are proud. Niklaus Vintler von Runkelstein (ca. 1345–1431), son of a merchant and an innkeeper’s daughter, commissioned the frescoes in 1388 and thus turned Castle Roncolo into a veritable Arthurian Castle.

Mareccio Castle

Surrounded by vineyards Mareccio Castle underwent a transformation in modern times: from medieval to Renaissance castle. The influential Römer Family from Bolzano decorated nearly all the castle with paintings and used the marvellous halls for their balls and social gatherings. Culture and dance, games and especially music are all integral components of the royal culture and way of life: the Römer family belonged to this world thanks to their distant relatives, families of royal bloodline from the times of old Tyrol. Up until the 19th century, Mareccio Castle, which lies surrounded by vineyards, was one of the first port of call in the city and, at the time, was also surrounded by an exquisite Baroque garden and orange groves. Castelronda 2014

Castelronda 2014 in Castle Roncolo will turn its attention to King Arthur and the literary cycle of frescoes depicting Tristan and Isolde, Garel of the Flowering Valley and Wigalois. During Castelronda 2014, Mareccio Castle will be open to the public for one full day: come and explore its halls with our expert guides. Castelronda 2014

MMM Firmian

Relationship between man and the mountains As the centrepiece of the Messner Mountain Museum, MMM Firmian in Sigmundskron Castle addresses the subject of man’s encounter with the mountains. The paths, stairs and towers lead visitors form the depths of the mountain, where their origins and exploitation are brought to life, and the religious significance of the peaks as an aid to orientation and a bridge to the beyond, to the history of mountaineering and the alpine tourist industry that we know today. Castelronda 2014 Reinhold Messner will be present on Friday 13th June and welcome guests personally. Join him by the fireplace and listen as he recounts stories from his adventure-packed life and as he answers questions you might have for him. Find your answer to all you ever wanted to know. Reinhold Messner will be in Firmiano on Saturday 14th June from 7 p.m. and, at 9 p.m., the ‘Messner’ film will be screened at the new cinema, Messner himself adding commentary. During the three Castleronda days, why not stop by the Museum Restaurant and enjoy some of the culinary delights being served. Opening hours: 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., last entry 5 p.m. Friday 13th and Saturday 14th June extended opening hours

Moos-Schulthaus Castle

Dedicated to medieval culture The Rottenburger family commissioned this Roman tower house around the mid 13th century, and which was then developed into a Gothic hunting lodge. After the Rottenburger bloodline eked out in 1410, brisk changes in ownership left their mark in the structure of the castle, with different elements shaping the space of the castle, with interlocking rooms, one style from a century melting seamlessly into another one. In 1958 Walter Amonn, businessman and patron of the arts, purchased the premises, which had been used up until that day for agricultural use: he renovated and decorated them with works of art. Something which you should take particular note of are the frescoes adorning the rooms, profane subjects from the Gothic era. Castelronda 2014 The programme includes special guides and talks, the visit of the Rosengarten Chapel (the Rose Garden Chapel), an exhibition of contemporary art, music, from the Stone Age to the Baroque with Prof. Bernhard Böhm (specialising in historical wooden wind instruments) and Baron Dr. Alexander von Hohenbühel will be giving a talk on ‘Moos-Schulthaus and the stately residences around Appiano’. Opening hours: 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.; last guided tour 5 p.m.

Trostburg Castle

Museum of Alto Adige’s castles The castle is first mentioned at the end of the 12th century, together with a certain Graman de Trosperch and his knights. In 1370/85, the Lords of Wolkenstein inherited the castle and court of Trost. The descendants of Michael, the eldest brother of the renowned Minnesinger Oswald von Wolkenstein, gradually developed Trost Castle to the current aspect. The modern visitor will encounter well-kept and richly decorated halls. Furthermore, they will be impressed by one of the biggest wine presses in South Tyrol (locally known as Torggl) and by the South Tyrolean Castles Museum with numerous castle replicas. Castelronda 2014 The programme includes special talks and tours with historian Dr. Daniel Mascher, with historian Baron Dr. Alexander von Hohenbühel, with Wolfgang von Klebelsberg talking on protecting and taking care of monuments and art at Trost Castle, and music from the Stone Age to the Baroque with Prof. Bernhard Böhm, specialising in historical wooden wind instruments. Opening hours: 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.; last guided tour 4 p.m. 1. Start from the Oswald von Wolkenstein Square in Ponte Gardena and head towards the castle on a road which travellers used back in the Middle Ages. 2.
