EXECUTIVE SUMMARY PROJECT GOAL The goal of this project is to establish a laboratory testing program to verify or refute light emitting diode (LED) manufacturers’ product claims regarding life, lumen maintenance and color maintenance of directional LED replacement lamps for use in the retail market. Test results will be provided to the Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) team for use in their effort to prepare for the promotion and use of LED replacement lamps in their service territory.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The LED lamps involved in this test program include an assortment of MR16, PAR20, PAR30, and PAR38 replacement lamps. These lamps represent a cross section of available lamp characteristics, including: •

Lifetime

Operating conditions will be controlled and monitored throughout the duration of the testing program. Controlled conditions include temperature, orientation, duty cycle, and dimming level. A data acquisition system will monitor each lamp’s electrical characteristics and operating time. Test results will verify or refute manufacturer claims regarding the following characteristics: •

INTRODUCTION The primary goal of lighting in retail applications is to encourage sales. Highlighting merchandise can help catch the customer’s eye and encourage shoppers to continue shopping and to make more purchases. Directional lighting is a popular choice for retail lighting applications because it allows the user to alter the focal point of the lighting when there are changes to the store layout or display. Halogen parabolic aluminized reflector (PAR) and multifaceted reflector (MR) lamps are commonly used directional lamps in the retail market segment. Manufacturers of light emitting diode (LED) replacement PAR and MR lamps now claim comparable photometric performance and much longer lifetime than traditional halogen lamps. LED replacement lamps also offer much lower energy use than traditional halogen lamps. This combination of comparable photometric performance and improved energy efficiency provides the potential for deep energy savings in the retail market. Initially the energy savings potential of directional LED replacement lamps will only be seen if the lamps’ initial performance meets user expectations. Market acceptance will be a result of the initial photometric performance of the lamps meeting the manufacturers’ claims. Long-term market acceptance will be a result of the photometric performance throughout the life of the lamp. The California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC) has begun testing that will verify manufacturers’ claims regarding initial quality of directional LED replacement lamps. To ensure long-term market transformation, these LED lamps must meet users’ expectations of quality over the life of the lamp. Users will expect the manufacturer claims for initial performance to hold up over the life of the lamp. PG&E wants to verify the longterm photometric performance of the lamps to ensure that all lamps included in promotional programs will meet consumer demands, thereby supporting market transformation.

BACKGROUND LED replacement lamps claim equivalent performance with traditional incandescent and fluorescent replacement lamps, as well as longer life and lower energy use. A high-quality, more efficacious alternative to traditional incandescent and fluorescent replacement lamps could potentially yield deep energy savings. To gain market penetration and thus maximize their energy savings potential, LED replacement lamps must gain long-term acceptance from consumers. The market penetration and long-term acceptance of LED replacement lamps presents the opportunity for large-scale energy savings within the U.S. commercial market, as much as 38 TWh savings by 2020, according to 2012 estimates by the Department of Energy’s Energy Effiiency and Renewable Energy office (EERE). To help ensure that these energy savings are realized, the Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) is considering options, including rebate programs, to encourage consumer adoption of LED lamps. To help inform PG&E during the decision making process, the CLTC has been contracted to conduct performance testing of directional LED replacement lamps. Halogen directional lamps, including parabolic aluminized reflector (PAR) and multifaceted reflector (MR) lamps, have been popular choices in the commercial market because of their light quality and multiple beam patterns. This performance testing will focus on LED

replacement lamp alternatives to traditional halogen PAR and MR lamps. LED PAR and MR lamps have the potential to provide a high-quality, energy-efficient replacement for directional lamps in the retail market. Test results will help to determine the total system life, lumen maintenance and color maintenance over the life of the LED lamps.

ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES The objectives of the Directional LED Lifetime Testing detailed in this report are to: •

characterize lumen and color maintenance over time



evaluate lifetime versus duty cycle



determine the total system lifetime

DIRECTIONAL LED LAMP MARKET EVALUATION Prior to selecting the LED replacement lamps to include in this life testing, CLTC reviewed currently available PAR and MR replacement lamp product offerings from multiple lamp manufacturers. The form factors considered in the market review were MR16, PAR20, PAR30, and PAR38. CLTC collected lamp characteristics including Power (W), Voltage (v), Luminous Flux (Lumens), CCT, CRI, Rated Life, and Dimmability. The market assessment can be found in the appendix of this report. LED replacement lamps remain a growth area in the lighting industry. For this reason manufacturers frequently change their product offerings and new manufacturers enter the field. As a result the market assessment is not expected to be complete and should only be viewed as a snapshot of the directional LED market at the time of the assessment. The lamps listed below have been selected for inclusion in this lifetime testing.

TEST METHODOLOGY APPLICABLE STANDARD TEST PROCEDURES Preparation of this life testing program included review of standard test procedures related to photometric and lifetime testing of LED and traditional replacement lamps. Photometric measurements will be taken in accordance with Illuminating Engineering Society LM-79-08 Approved Method: Electric and Photometric Measurements of Solid State Lighting Products (IES LM-79).

LIFE TESTING APPARATUS CLTC will construct life testing racks to allow for continuous operation of the lamps included in this lifetime testing. The life testing racks will include a frame with horizontal branches. Each of the branches will operate 10 LED replacement lamps (see figure 1, below). Measurements are given in inches.

The lamps will be operated in typical orientations, housings, and temperatures as described below. Electrical power will be supplied in accordance with manufacturer recommendations or typical industry standards. The life testing racks will allow operation of the lamps in baseup, base-down, and horizontal orientations. The lamp mounting points will include open air mounting points and enclosed mounting points. The life testing racks will be housed in a

temperature controlled room. The temperature of the room will be maintained at a constant temperature of 25⁰C, the recommended operating temperature according to IES LM-79.

LAMP OPERATION PLAN Thirty samples of each product from table 1 will be operated in the life testing apparatus. Each has been assigned a set of operational conditions to be maintained throughout the test period. The operational conditions include the following: •

Sample Size – The samples size is the number of lamps assigned to the operating conditions. Operating Condition Sets 1–4 (seen in table 2) have been assigned five lamps per set of conditions to allow for comparison to ENERGY STAR color consistency testing. Operating Condition Sets 5–8 have been assigned two and three lamps per set to provide a balance between the variety of conditions and strength of the data.



Operating Orientation – The operating orientation refers to the lamp base position in relation to the lamp. For example, when a lamp is operating in the base-up orientation, the lamp base is above the lamp. Three operating orientations have been selected for this testing: base up, base down, and base horizontal. These have been selected because these are the most common mounting orientations.



Mounting Style – In this test plan “Mounting Style” refers to the type of fixture the lamp will be mounted in. Two fixture types have been selected for this study, an open air fixture and a fully enclosed fixture. The open air fixture has been selected to provide maximum ventilation. The enclosed fixture has been selected to simulate the actual installed operating condition of the lamps.



Duty Cycle – The operating duty cycle defines the time the lamps are switched on and switched off. The lamps included in this testing will be switched on for 30 minutes and off for 5 minutes. This on/off switching cycle will repeat throughout the life of the testing. The lamps will be switched on and off during the testing to simulate real world switching cycles.



Dimming Level – The dimming level is the percent of full power supplied to the lamp. For example a 20W lamp operating at a 50% dimmed level is supplied with 10W of power. A small sample of lamps included in our testing will be operated at a 50% dimmed level to characterize the result of long-term operation of the lamps at a power level less than full power.

MEASUREMENT PLAN To characterize the lifetime, reliability, lumen maintenance, and color maintenance of the LED lamps, photometric and electrical characteristics will be measured and compared to lamp operating hours. The photometric and electrical characteristics will be measured upon initial operation and at every 1000 additional operating hours. Measurements will end when the lamp reaches the manufacturer’s rated lifetime or when the lamp experiences a system failure. During the entire operational period, voltage and current will be measured and recorded every 10 minutes to document lamp operating conditions.

EQUIPMENT Photometric measurements will be taken with a Labsphere illumia 3000 series spectrometer coupled with a Labsphere 1-meter integrating sphere. This equipment has been selected to meet the photometric measurement requirements of IES LM-79.

REPORTING PLANS LED replacement lamps are known to have a very long expected lifetime. The lamps included in this assessment have lifetimes of 25,000 hours or more, based on the manufacturers’ claims. To reach the expected operational lifetime of the lamp, this lifetime assessment is expected to continue for up to four years. CLTC plans to provide stakeholders with intermediate progress reports. Intermediate reports will be prepared following the first 5,000 hours of operation and every 5,000 hours of operation thereafter until the completion of the testing. The intermediate reports will include photometric and electrical measurements completed to date. CLTC will also provide brief review of any key findings during the period covered by the report.
