Celebrating the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy

About the cover: The Return of the Prodigal Son by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. Pope Francis has declared an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy from December 8, 2015, until November 20, 2016: Dear brothers and sisters, I have often thought about how the Church might make clear its mission of being a witness to mercy. It is journey that begins with a spiritual conversion. For this reason, I have decided to call an extraordinary Jubilee that is to have the mercy of God at its center. The theme of mercy is particularly meaningful for the Diocese of Saginaw in its mission of forming evangelizing disciples, since the motto on the coat of arms of Bishop Cistone is: “Father of Mercy and Love.” 2

2015-2016 DIOCESAN ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES, GATHERINGS & RETREATS In 2015-2016, the Diocese of Saginaw will offer a rich variety of enrichment opportunities, liturgies, workshops, training sessions, and retreats to help all those in our parishes and schools grow as disciples of the Lord and sharers of the Good News. Many of these offerings take place at the diocesan Center for Ministry located at 5802 Weiss St. in Saginaw Township. The Center for Ministry also extends hospitality to diocesan, parish, and other non-profit groups who are looking for a place to host meetings, staff days, prayer days, and other events. To register for many of the diocesan offerings, see the registration form on page 29.

A SPECIAL OFFERING FOR 2015-2016: SEMINAR ON IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY

The Diocese of Saginaw is pleased to announce a special opportunity for all who desire to explore the spiritual wisdom of the founder of the Jesuits, St. Ignatius of Loyola. The “Seminar on Ignatian Spirituality” is especially timely given that Pope Francis is the first Jesuit pope. This seminar will also be of particular interest to anyone wishing to be trained as a spiritual director. This seminar is being held in collaboration with the Manresa Jesuit Retreat House in Bloomfield Hills, MI, and is a prerequisite for those who wish to apply for Manresa’s two-year “Internship in Listening Ministry” which trains future spiritual directors. Manresa will be accepting a new group of candidates for their internship program in June of 2016. However, in order to apply for this internship, the completion of a “Seminar on Ignatian Spirituality” comprised of five workshops is first required (visit www.manresa-sj.org for more information). The exciting news is that three of these prerequisite workshops will take place at the Center for Ministry in Saginaw in 2015-16. Along with saving individuals money on fuel, these three courses in Saginaw will be offered at a considerable discount. Registration and payment for the other two prerequisite workshops (“Discernment of Spirits” and “Discernment of God’s Will”) should be arranged directly with Manresa Jesuit Retreat House by calling 248. 644.4933 Please note that completion of the five prerequisite workshops does not guarantee acceptance into Manresa’s two-year “Internship in Listening Ministry,” which takes place in Bloomfield Hills and involves additional tuition fees that are paid directly to Manresa by the individual. Please also note that the Oct. 9-10, 2015 offering on Ignatian Spirituality and the April 8-9, 2016 offering on Ignatian Discipleship are open to the general public. These workshops begin on Friday evening and conclude Saturday afternoon. You do not have to be interested in applying for the Manresa internship program in order to attend these two offerings. All are welcome! For more information, contact Pat Preston at [email protected] or call 989.797.6654. Here is the schedule:

Some places are very famously associated with the most important events of his life: Nazareth to his incarnation and childhood; Bethlehem to his birth; Jerusalem to his passion, death and resurrection. But what about Capernaum? The town of Capernaum became Jesus' home base during his Galilean Ministry. It is there that he cured the paralytic and Peter's mother-in-law. It is there he gave his most famous discourse – on the Bread of Life (John 6). Capernaum has been studied archeologically in depth by the Franciscans of the Holy Land, and it holds incredible treasures that can be traced back to Jesus' time. The synagogue where he preached is still there, the streets he walked are still there, the house of St. Peter is still there. Come and discover this exciting town and all the evidence surrounding Jesus' presence there 2000 years ago. Fr. Cabrera earned a Licentiate in Biblical Theology at the Gregorian University, Rome. He also spent a semester at the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum of Jerusalem in 2011 with some of the Franciscan Friars that were involved in the archeological excavations of the city of Capernaum. He currently serves as the diocesan Vicar for Hispanics and as pastor of All Saints Parish. 2016 Bishop's Charity Golf Classic and Dinner for Seminarian Education Date: Wednesday, September 14, 2016 (Golf) Thursday, September 15, 2016 (Dinner) Locations: Swan Valley Golf Course, Saginaw (Golf, Sept. 14, 2016) Saginaw Valley State University, Curtiss Hall (Dinner, Sept. 15, 2016) 27
