INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)? Students who are able to demonstrate achievement of relevant outcomes or competencies of a VET course through prior formal or informal learning may be exempted from certain study requirements for the HSC. Who may apply? RPL is intended for students who may have already undertaken study, work or training that is directly relevant to the competencies of the VET course they are studying for the HSC. This may include students who have: • re-entered the education system after study at TAFE, work or other training • transferred from another state who may have studied a similar course • part-time employment while studying at school • work in family businesses or community organisation on an informal basis The Board of Studies does not approve RPL on the basis of courses studied in Stage 5. So, for example, the study of Information Software Technology is not grounds for RPL for Information, Digital Media & Technology. Teachers can make provision for students who may progress faster because of proficiency or talent through flexible progression, alternative study options or extension work. What are the exemptions for which a student may apply? a) Students who are currently employed or who have worked recently (within the current school year) in the industry related to the VET course being studied may apply for exemption from (35hrs) of the mandatory (70hr) work placement. In this case students will need to weigh the advantages of exemption against giving up the opportunity to enrich their application of classroom learning in a different work environment. b) Students who have undertaken previous relevant study may apply for exemption from study and assessment in competencies already achieved. In this regard, students will need to refer to the Board of Studies syllabus for the VET HSC course being studied and make application for those competencies for which there is evidence of achievement of all elements of each competency. In this case, students wishing to sit the HSC examination will need to consider the effect of any exemption on their HSC performance. What is the process? 1 Talk to your VET teacher and VET Coordinator about your wish to apply for RPL, your grounds for exemption, the evidence you require and the implications of a successful application. 2 Complete this application form and attach as much documentary evidence as possible to support your application. 3 Hand in your application to the VET Coordinator. 4 The VET Coordinator will assess your application. They may ask for additional evidence such as a demonstration of the competencies or a portfolio of work. 5 The VET Coordinator will inform you of the result of your application.
