Dinosaurs

Year 1 and 2 Spring 1

Independence The children will be learning how to access resources and activities by themselves, and will be getting more confident at dressing and undressing for PE. Communication Over the next half term we will continue to develop our communication skills through initiatives such as R-Time, and show and tell.

Self-Belief We will promote self belief by celebrating successes in class and as a whole school and will continue with Star Writers, Star of the Day and Golden Book child.

Aspiration We will be aspiring to do our best in all our work and will celebrate successes and look at successes of others. We are looking at the achievements of the band Queen this month.

Curiosity Perseverance We will provide opportunities for the children to build resilience and perseverance and celebrate successes when children find things difficult but try hard.

Through a creative curriculum approach we will be looking at life during the time of the dinosaurs, to promote curiosity in the children. In our R.E topics we also be asking different ‘Wonder Questions’

English In English We will be using the text ‘Tyrannosaurus Drip’ by Julia Donaldson to explore the following objectives: Year 1 Using the prefix –un, punctuating sentences correctly, checking writing makes sense and using ‘and ‘to join sentences. Year 2 Using apostrophes, writing in the past and present tense, writing about real events, using and, or, if and but to join sentences.

In Science this half term, we are extending our learning about materials and learning about their uses. We are going to do some experiments to find out about the properties of materials. One of our experiments is called ‘The Nest Test!’ where we will find out which material is the best insulator. We will also be designing a Topsy Turvy land where everything is made of an inappropriate material! E.g., chocolate tea pots and metal clothes! In computing this half term,

we are learning all about algorithms. Algorithms are a set of instructions. We will be making and debugging algorithms for the Beebots!

During our topic lessons we will be looking into where dinosaurs used to live in the world. We will be talking about William Walker (a fossil hunter) and about how scientist find out about dinosaurs, through fossils.

. In Art this half term, we will be drawing using our imagination. We will create a new species of dinosaur that is roaming the planet! The children will learn how to use their pencils to sketch and draw, using ideas from observations, too. We will be drawing shapes and making tone and texture with our pencil strokes.

Hockey Throughout the half term the children will be learning to hit and push the ball with a hockey stick. They will developing these skills through a range of attacking and defensive games.

This term the children will continue to use their voices expressively and creatively by singing hymns on a weekly basis in class. The children will be learning about the rock band Queen.

SEAL – Going for Goals This theme focuses primarily on the key aspect of motivation. It gives an important opportunity for all children’s abilities, qualities and strengths to be valued. The theme provides opportunities for the children to reflect on themselves as individuals, particularly their strengths as learners and how they learn most effectively

Our R.E curriculum allows children to explore their own and other beliefs and values and develop an awe and wonder.

We have a weekly Bible story reading as a key stage and talk about lessons to be learned from the life of Jesus and other people in the Bible. Two members of each class are part of the school council.

Social

Cultural

We carry out peer assessment in all subjects. We create opportunities for each child’s voice and use democratic systems within our classes.

We will be looking at the life of indigenous people in Australia and how their culture differs from ours. We will also be listening to and appraising music by Queen.
