Academic Planning: DGF Calendar Improvements for School Year 2016 2016--17 and CCRS Alignment with Stateside Standards

College and Career Readiness Standards

In a strategic shift to better prepare students for life after K-12 education and to smooth the transition from DoDEA to other education agencies for students who migrate in and out of our system, DoDEA has begun the process of implementing College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) in both Math and English Language Arts. In order to support the instructional shifts that are required for successful CCRS implementation, the DGF calendar has been adjusted for School Year 2016 -17 to provide faculty collaboration time during which teachers will co-plan lessons, review student performance and monitor data to support appropriate shifts in practice during the implementation period. DoDEA Headquarters has mandated that every school has time built in the duty day for teachers to discuss

DGF Rota MHS Principal, Mr. Mohan Vaswani, and ES Principal, Mr. Walter Wilhoit, look forward to the changes and the improved calendar for school year 2016-2017.

Professional Learning Team Collaboration

instructional practices, review assessments, design instructional materials, and collaborate with one another. Within the SY 2016-17 calendar, weekly early release days are scheduled to provide appropriate collaboration time to support the use of the new standards. All teachers will collaborate in P rofe ssi onal Learni ng Teams (PLTs) for periods of 75 minutes each Thursday afternoon. Thursday was selected as the optimal day for early release in order to maximize momentum between the collaborative period and classroom time by

giving teachers an opportunity to make adjustments to classroom practice immediately following the early release. Additionally, because several other schools in DoDEA THE VALUE OF COLhave also scheduled their LABORATIVE LEARNcollaboration on Thursday afternoons, ING opportunities are increased for professional growth beyond the walls of our own schools, made possible by a number of technological supports provided by DoDEA.

Dismissal time on Thursdays will be 1345 for the DGF ES and 1400 for the DGF MHS. If you have questions about the early release, please contact the school.

Academic Activities: Rota Science Symposium Sixth and seventh grade students presented 60 original science research projects in the Rota Science Symposium, May 12th, in the MHS gym. The primary goal of the science research program is to promote original research and experimentation in the sciences and to recognize students for their outstanding achievement. It is hoped that students are encourage to continue their interest and participation in the sciences and perhaps make careers in sciences. Many thanks to the volunteer judges, parent volunteers and supporters!

Left: Kaitlin Simon, 7th grade, is discussing her project with a judge. Presenters develop higher-order thinking skills and integrate learning across disciplines through the process of scientific inquiry, preparing a scientific presentation, and delivering a presentation All of these skills will benefit them in their pursuits.

Above: Jessica Scoppa, 6th grade, is discussing her project with a judge. The volunteer judges complete the experience and help presenters gain self-confidence.

Fine Arts: Vivian Killian Art Exhibition by Linda White An art exhibition showcasing the work of Senior Vivian Killian commenced at the El Puerto restaurant El Arriate in April. The show was a culmination of works produced for the AP Studio Art Drawing portfolio. Vivian's works in tempera investigate corvids, ravens and crows, and their relationship with the world. Her pieces delve into common fears and desires shared by the human race; things humans think about, whereas animals do not. Exploring symbolism and associations with the black birds , the works are thought provoking and entertaining. Said Ms. Kilian, "Crows are known to be extremely smart creatures and as a result are commonly viewed as symbols for wisdom. These black birds are also looked down upon for their association with death." The art pieces progressed from portraits of objects to a portrayal of ideas surrounding wisdom and death, alluding to nature's true character. Opening night was well attended by friends, colleagues, and mentors who viewed the works with admiration. After graduating this spring from DGF Rota Middle High School, Vivian plans to attend Portland State University in Portland, Oregon to study technology, arts, and culture.

Fine Arts: Malaga Trip by Linda White In April, 18 high school students hopped on a bus with Spanish teacher Maribel Bastidas and Art teacher Linda White to explore the historic city of Malaga on the Costa del Sol. Said Katelyn Rogers, “Honestly, an amazing experience. I’m really glad I was able to go.” After situating in the bunk/hostel accommodations, the first stop was a visit to the Casa Natal, the birthplace of Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso. Some of Picasso’s drawings brought up a conversation about Franco’s dictatorship and the bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War preluding WWII. The afternoon was spent at the Museo de Vidrio y Cristal (Glass and Crystal Museum) where students made their own art pieces with liquid dyes or candle holders. The evening’s surprise was a teambuilding mental exercise: breaking out of a locked room at The X Door within 60 minutes. The experience was so rewarding, student groups returned to apply their creative, thinking caps and pattern recognition skills a second time. Communication and working together were key components to successfully breaking codes, riddles, and enigmas. “It was an exhilarating experience filled with adventure, culture and meeting new friends,” said Senior Shana Edouard. The next morning began with a leisurely walk through the Roman Forum, a hike up the fortress Alcazaba, and a stroll through street art to the Contemporary Museo. Said Vivian Killian, Senior, “I loved visiting the contemporary museum...because I left feeling refreshed and inspired.”

Fine Arts: Malaga Trip cont. Evenings were spent on the red carpet, as the plazas and calles were paved with red carpets for the Malaga Film Festival. “I enjoyed talking to the Spaniards and seeing Malaga come alive at night,” said Caleb Tuson. An afternoon visit to the Museum Pompidou exposed students to the confusing realm of contemporary art, and interactive exhibits about Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, kept students engaged and entertained. At the museum, the students themselves were part of the art exhibit exhibit---as --as they entered, real real--time recordings projected art viewers in the museum. This raised questions of how we view art, what makes something art, and how art is valued. “The exhibitions in the contemporary museum and the Pompidou left me a changed person,” reported Shaina Templin, Senior. The last day included a trip to Nerja, where a guided tour took the group back in time millions of years at the Nerja Caves. Balance, skill, and strength were tested at the final destination Parque Amazonia in Marbella. After climbing and flying on zip lines, the group returned with memories and real real--time learning forged through the great events and experiences.

Fine Arts : Aladdin Jr. Lights Up the MPB Stage!

Aladdin came to the DGF stage in the MPB May 4th. The first performance was before a packed house as the middle and high school thespians entertained us during the advisory/seminar period! Superintendent Mr. Kent Worford attended the play. Friends and families then were entertained by the musical at 6:30pm that same night. Then, Friday May 6th, the elementary students loved the beautiful Princess Jasmine (Vida White), cheered for Aladdin (Ethan McCraney), were entertained by the Genie (Presley Peters), and despised the sinister Jafar (Byron Rios) who with his parrot Iago (Kayla Dietrick) almost stole the show! This was the first musical ever performed at DGF and was superbly coordinated by Jerri Mitchell, the show’s director.

DGF Rota M/HS celebrated Feria Day in conjunction with the DGF Rota ES April 28th, 2016. Students were encouraged to dress up in their feria dresses. After learning the steps for two months, a group of International Club members danced Sevillanas at lunch time. On that same day, young ambassadors from DGF's International Club gave a presentation to a group of Sophomores from a high school in Sevilla comparing the Spanish and American school systems. After a session of questions and answers, students led the group around campus. In one of the stops of the tour, the cafeteria, the Spanish visitors danced Sevillanas with DGF students that were celebrating Feria Day the same day.
