Our mission is to make a difference by identifying the community’s health and wellness needs while bridging the gap between those needs and the cost of the solutions.

The SOMC Development Foundation encompasses fundraising efforts for Hospice, Cancer, Employee Relief, Heart & Vascular, Pediatrics, Community Health and Wellness, the Endowment Fund and the areas of greatest need. These funds generate much needed support and enable SOMC to continually deliver extraordinary care for future generations. We’re here to make a difference in our community.  Our goal is to help provide much needed resources that will help sustain the health care needs of our community members. We engage in fundraising efforts to help support initiatives throughout SOMC and our community.  This support ranges from the purchase of new equipment & technology to upgrading facilities as well as other community projects that address our community’s health and wellness needs.  Support and funds raised by the Development Foundation enable SOMC to respond to challenges and new opportunities as they arise.  1

SOMC Development Director Kara Redoutey Earns CFRE Designation SOMC’s Director of Community Relations and Development, Kara Redoutey, recently received designation as a certified fund raising executive. CFRE designation is given to individuals that pass a rigorous written examination testing their knowledge, skills and abilities as a fundraising executive.

Hayley Burchett,

Donor Relations Coordinator

“Achieving CFRE designation is something that means a lot to me,” Redoutey said. “I take a lot of pride in the work of the SOMC Development Foundation. I believe this experience will be a benefit not only to myself and the Development Foundation, but also to the community that we serve.” In addition to passing a written exam, CFRE designees also agree to uphold Accountability Standards and the Donor Bill of Rights. CFRE is considered to be the premier global credential for career fundraisers. “The CFRE credential was created to identify for the public and employers those individuals who possess the knowledge, skills and commitment to perform fundraising duties in an effective and ethical manner,” Jim Caldarola, immediate past chair of CFRE International, said. “The CFRE credential demonstrates a high level of commitment on the part of Kara Redoutey to herself, the fundraising profession and the donors who are served.”

SOMC Guild Contributions The guilds at Southern Ohio Medical Center share a common goal – to support the needs of the patients as well as the hospital’s beneficial programs through fundraising efforts. They achieved their goal in 2015, raising more than $69,000 as part of their effort to advance the mission of SOMC. The women and men of SOMC’s guilds are truly extraordinary individuals and make such a difference for the patients, families and staff of Southern Ohio Medical Center. This year, the support of the Guilds allowed SOMC to purchase items, such as Heart Care Equipment for both patient care and staff needs, Breast Pumps for Maternity and donations toward the SOMC Cancer Compassion Fund, Pediatric Nursery and SOMC Hospice Center. SOMC is supported by a total of six guilds: the Hope Guild, the Kardia Guild, the Pleasure Guild, the Scioto Guild, the Service Guild and the Pediatric Guild.

Shuffleboard Champions Donate Winnings to Hospice Billy Logan and Pat Malone recently donated their winnings of $832 to SOMC Hospice after coming in first place during a memorial shuffleboard tournament at the Stag Bar on U.S. Rt 23 in Portsmouth. Pictured here, Logan (left) and Malone (right) are seen with Sheila Riggs of SOMC Hospice following the donation.

Support Breast Cancer Patients With “A Night of Broadway” Musical theatre enthusiasts enjoyed their favorite tunes and supported local breast cancer patients by attending “A Night of Broadway” Jan. 31 at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts. The show was presented by Dr. Vincent Scarpinato, Linda Tieman, and the Portsmouth West Vocal Department, in association with the SOMC Development Foundation, Shawnee State University, Bob and Debbie Gambill, and the SOMC Service Guild. The program featured vocal selections from alumni and current students of Portsmouth West High School. All proceeds earned benefited the SOMC Breast Cancer Compassion Fund.

“A Night of Broadway was a musical celebration that brought the entire community together to invigorate hope and help defeat a terrible disease that affects so many lives,” Dr. Scarpinato, senior medical director of Surgical Services at SOMC, said. “While there are often many resources for breast cancer patients, there are also many patients who need help with critical needs; this production raised money for those individuals. “Over the years, we have produced many shows to benefit our local breast cancer patients, and each program brings a new level of appreciation for our community,” Dr. Scarpinato said. “I’m honored to help with these shows, and even more humbled by the response they receive.”

Brownie Troop 339 Donates Cookies to Hospice Brownie Troop 339 from Wheelersburg recently donated 186 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to the patients and staff at SOMC Hospice. Pictured here, troop members pose alongside some of the cookies. Developed in the 1980s, SOMC Hospice provides a special kind of care for terminally ill patients and their families. The focus of hospice is on pain-management, symptom control and supportive services that allow patients to complete their lives with dignity, purpose and peace.

Seen here with one of the new stretchers is SOMC President and CEO Randy Arnett, far left, and Director of Community Relations and Development Kara Redoutey, second from left.

Development Foundation Purchases New Stretchers The Emergency Department at Southern Ohio Medical Center recently purchased new stretchers with funds raised through the SOMC Development Foundation. The stretchers offered improved mobility, which makes transporting patients easier and safer. They feature a bed alarm, which alerts medical staff of patient movement, and decreases falls. They also allow patients to be weighed without ever leaving the bed.

11

Also pictured, from left to right, are Emergency Department nurses Jason Donahoe, Ryan Souders, Karissa Couch, Jason Ross, Melissa Baily and Caylee Hopkins.

Boilermakers Local 105 Gives to SOMC Hospice SOMC Hospice recently received a $6,000 donation from Boilermakers Local #105. The funds were raised as part of the Boilermakers Local 105 Charity Golf Outing. Present at the donation were, from left to right, Sheila Riggs of SOMC Hospice, Director of SOMC Hospice Teresa Ruby, Boilermakers Local #105 Business Manager Scott Hammond and Chairman of the Golf Committee Joe Ledford. The donation will benefit the patients and families of SOMC Hospice.

Susan G. Komen Awards SOMC With Hands of Hope Funding The Columbus Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure recently announced they would be awarding Southern Ohio Medical Center $56,245 to support the hospital’s Hands of Hope Program. “We are extremely grateful to have the continued support of Susan G. Komen for the Cure,” SOMC Director of Cancer Services Wendi Waugh said. “It will help ensure that local women without insurance or underinsured women can still receive their annual mammograms without the fear of medical bills.”

Hands of Hope is a grant-funded program at SOMC that provides free services such as mammograms and clinical breast exams. The program also seeks to educate women 40 years and older about the importance of early breast cancer detection, while supplying those already diagnosed with guidance and support. When treated early, the five-year breast cancer survival rate is 98 percent. The SOMC Breast Navigator can be reached at 740-356-PINK.

SOMC Donates to Portsmouth Connex The Southern Ohio Medical Center Development Foundation recently donated $10,000 to Portsmouth Connex, matching a $10,000 donation given by the SOMC Medical Staff. Portsmouth Connex is a local group proposing a series of activity routes throughout Portsmouth and its surrounding communities. The routes could be used to promote biking, running and walking. Present at the check presentation were, from left to right, SOMC President and CEO Randy Arnett, SOMC Community Health and Wellness Director Wendi Waugh, Dr. Cynthia Hamm of the SOMC Medical Staff, SOMC Development Foundation Chairman Dave Fowler, Barb Bradbury and Jeff Smith of Portsmouth Connex, and SOMC Director of Development Kara Redoutey.

Pediatric Guild Donates iPods to Nursery The nursery at Southern Ohio Medical Center now has iPods to help soothe babies dealing with symptoms of withdrawal, thanks to a donation from the SOMC Pediatric Guild. The iPods are beneficial for babies who respond well to low volume, soothing music.

Pictured here with the new iPods are Glenna Arnett, Aubrey Roy, Diane Applegate and Ashley Musser alongside Maternity’s Jone Stone.

Miss Wheelersburg Donates to SOMC Heart and Vascular Fund Miss Wheelersburg Julianna Logan, a contestant in the 2015 River Days Queen’s Pageant, recently donated $1,225 to the SOMC Heart and Vascular Fund. The fund supports patients who have experienced heart attacks or other heart health issues. Logan, who was diagnosed with a heart murmur as a child, has dedicated her River Days candidacy to the issue of heart health. Logan raised the donated funds by holding a “Run For Your Life! Zombie 5K,” which drew more than 120 participants – many of whom were dressed in full zombie attire and with full makeup. 13

‘Burg Cheerleaders Donate to Compassion Fund The cheerleaders of Wheelersburg High School recently donated $1,500 to SOMC Breast Cancer Compassion Fund. Pictured here are members of the high school cheerleading squad alongside staff at the SOMC Cancer Center.

Disc Golf available at Earl Thomas Conley Park SOMC Community Health and Wellness is making a nine-hole “Disc Golf” course available to the community for free at Earl Thomas Conley Riverside Park. Disc golf is a game played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc, or Frisbee®. The sport was formalized in the 1970s, and shares with “ball golf” the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest throws). A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target, which is the “hole.” The hole can be one of a number

of disc golf targets; the most common is called a Pole Hole® an elevated metal basket. As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive throw from the spot where the previous throw has landed. The trees, shrubs, and terrain changes located in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles for the golfer. The hole is completed when the disc makes it into the basket. Disc golf shares the same joys and frustrations of traditional golf, whether it’s sinking a long putt or hitting a tree halfway down the fairway, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
