Had you mentioned you were visiting the city back in 1996, people would have looked at you in shock. ‘El Boxto’ or the Hole, as Bilbao was known, was one of the least glamorous holiday destinations in the world. Now, thanks to a facelift via the architectural marvel that is the Guggenheim Museum,

Bilbao is one of the most visited places in Spain. The ‘Bilbao Effect’ has seen the city attract many top architects who have virtually redesigned large parts of the city. Regenerated, Bilbao now boasts plenty of Michelin-starred restaurants and a lively nightlife, alongside luxury hotels and high-end shopping.

The maze of interconnecting alleys feels a little like a rabbit warren, but navigating yourself around is all part of the fun. The historical seven streets, the oldest part of the neighborhood, feature many bars and restaurants packed with laid-back locals. The Mercado de la Ribera, reputably the largest indoor market in Europe, is adjacent to the seven streets and well worth a visit. This ruling has relaxed a little, although Athletic fans remain fiercely loyal and match day is a major event in Bilbao. The team’s brand new stadium is being constructed right next to the old San Mamés Stadium, and is expected to be ready by 2014. Tickets can be purchased from the stadium and the team usually plays on a Sunday evening, although some games may be played on a Saturday or Wednesday.
