Overview The goals for the MIT Portugal brand identity are to: 1. Create a modern, bold representation of this important collaboration between MIT & Portugal 2. Create a consistent and cohesive visual identity that will be reflected through all communications materials including the website

The key to a successful brand identity program is the ability to communicate the key messages to its diverse and important audiences. MIT Portugal audiences include: • PhD and Masters-level students from Portugal and across Europe • MIT faculty and community

The identity system was developed by Visual Dialogue to reflect the following three key messages about the program: 1. M.I.T.—MIT’s reputation as the leader in engineering systems arena is undeniable. 2. Global collaboration—bringing together academia, government, and industry on issues of importance to all 3. Systems—the focus on engineering systems in the program is the key to addressing complex problems from a societal, technological, and environmental standpoint mit portugal design guidelines 4

• European business • Portuguese government officials • The Portuguese people

Logo The MIT Portugal logo represents the program and expresses it’s leadership qualities. The different versions represent variations for spot (PMS), 4-color (CMYK), and black & white (grayscale) printing, as well as onscreen (RGB) for web and presentation usage. Ideally when using CMYK printing, an additional spot color of PMS 877 silver should be used (this logo file is called “mitportugal-logo-5color.eps”). normal

The logos for the affiliated Portuguese universities should always appear smaller than the MIT Portugal logo and the sizes should be relative to each other.

Color Palette The approved color system for MIT Portugal should be strictly followed in all instances. Note: When viewing this guideline on-screen or as a desktop printout, it is not color accurate. For accurate colors refer to Pantone chips. The MIT Portugal colors consist of two primary colors, PMS 201 red (MIT), and PMS 877 silver.

The secondary colors are for use in defining the four focus areas. Those colors are outlined below along with color breakdowns for CMYK (4-color printing) and RGB (on-screen). The tertiary color used for body text and other information is black.

Symbol Imagery The MIT Portugal identity uses a system of symbol imagery to represent the program. Each focus area has distinct iconography. If no specific area is being highlighted then a mixture of all symbols should be used. These symbols are provided in mass and should only be used in this way. They should not be used in singular form or enlarged. The imagery can be used in combination with a gradient of the colors or of the symbols themselves (see examples to follow).

Typography The primary typefaces used for the MIT Portugal identity are Rongel and Morgan Sans both of which were created by Mario Feliciano, a leading Portuguese type designer. Consistent use of these typefaces combined with the logo, color palette, and imagery will help establish a unified brand for MIT Portugal.

Rongel Morgan Sans Morgan Sans Bold

Rongel and Morgan Sans typefaces can be ordered online at: http://www.felicianotypefoundry.com There are two alternative fonts for use when neither of the primary faces are available: Times New Roman and Arial. Times New Roman and Arial are standard Windows and Mac fonts that come loaded with the operating system on most computers. These are also suitable for the website.
