Faculty members and students are the most important human resources. Without these two groups, there would be no university. However, FAMU has continued to become increasingly top heavy by adding more, highly paid administrators. In the meantime student tuition continues to rise with a decrease in educational quality due to increasing class size and increased faculty load. Similarly, faculty salaries remain stagnant and in many disciplines those salaries are not competitive. There are staff members with baccalaureate degrees who have higher salaries than full professors in the social sciences and humanities, thus, the Ph.D. is not valued at this academic institution. Faculty teaching loads are increasing, even in those disciplines that have previously been successful in securing external research dollars. Having served at FAMU for 13 years, through the presidential administrations of Gainous, Bryant, Robinson 1, Ammons, Robinson 2, and Mangum, my perspective is that faculty value and faculty morale are currently at their lowest. The strategic plan should also consider student integration in civil society and an introduction to civic engagement. I believe that the customer service at FAMU is the destruction of our institution and most importantly it ruins the reputation of the our school, specifically those in the Financial Aid that contribute to this destruction and various departments on our campus. I hope that this negative customer will end one day. We are moving in the direction and I am confident that Dr. Mangum and her team can, and will, move FAMU Forward. PS: We need to offer Foreign Language majors if we want to truly be a global institution. A young woman I am recruiting wants to study Chinese Language, but we do not offer it. We must fix this moving forward. Thanks for soliciting feedback on this important initiative and undertaking! I'm very interested in being a part of the plans to move our University forward! There is a lack of professionalism in students and poor reputation of FAMU among the student population that needs to be addressed because if we have a poor mindset of the school what are the chances of the student giving back? Professors complain of the poor writing skills of students, further writing classes should be offered to students to improve writing skills so that students are able to perform in the professional environment. For those of us "down in the weeds" the day-to-day frustration of outdated equipment, facilities, and furniture is disempowering and discouraging. Gross and broken desks in the classroom do not make students feel like scholars! Convoluted and dysfunctional technology processes (software, printing, web design, timesheets) erode time and energy for research and instruction. The car-centric campus diminishes pedestrian safety and erodes the collegiate experience. Hiring: It's great that the President's hires start right away and receive bonuses-- what about the rest of us? The low wages and ridiculously long hiring process (over 5 months?!?) make it difficult to attract quality candidates. OPS hires need to begin and end at the same time as 9 month faculty-- hiring OPS in October to extend hours is so useless; the hiring and training process needs to be complete in the Summer, not mid-Fall! Fundraising: you are neither asking rich (white) people for money, nor making it easy for them to give you money. Not all supporters are alumni-- what about former faculty? What about a (living) memorial fund program? For such-and-such donation, your loved one's name supports a faculty chair, new construction, scholarship, etc. Also, the faculty and staff fundraising program doesn't ask for much, so we don't give much. Fundraising goals that will expressly benefit faculty (raises, facilities improvements, technology upgrades, funding new positions). Self-interest will encourage giving. Outreach: I liked the idea of a gala, but what was the "hook" to go-- it didn't sound fun. Can we use the beautiful theater on campus to bring Alvin Ailey (etc) to campus-- that would be a gala affair! International programs: everyone wants to go to Cuba. For true change to take place the university administration has to stand together and stay in place for 5 years or more, however, the administration has to remove and change the gatekeepers who are the directors, managers and supervisors who have been in place for years. The Gatekeepers are the problem not the upper administration because change never get pass that level of the organization. Plus there should be in-house promotions and training. All levels of training for people who actually do the work alone with management. Hire people who have the degrees in the area you need help, not just any damn degree (when I want a doctor he better have a MD, when I want a chef he better know how to cook)

Need bottom-up evaluation as well as top-down then you will see improvement.
