28. STEPHEN BRADSHAW6 IVES (WILLIAM5, JOHN4, BENJAMIN3, THOMAS2, JOHN1) was born 12 Apr 1801 in Salem, Essex, MA, and died 31 Jul 1883 in Salem, Essex, MA. He married (1) MARY PERKINS 16 May 1826 in Salem, Essex, MA, daughter of DAVID PERKINS and HARRIET FABENS. She was born 01 Apr 1805 in Salem, Essex, MA, and died 04 Jul 1873 in Salem, Essex, MA. He married (2) HARRIET PERKINS 31 May 1876, daughter of DAVID PERKINS and HARRIET FABENS. She was born 26 Nov 1808 in Salem, Essex, MA, and died 23 Dec 1886 in Philadelphia, PA. Notes for STEPHEN BRADSHAW IVES: Stephen seems to have had a lifelong interest in board games. He and his father William, formed the firm of W & S.B. Ives to manufacture and market games. In 1843, Stephen developed a game called "The Mansion of Happiness", which became the first board game sold in the United States. A series of commercially successful games followed, including an 1852 board game called "Uncle Tom's Cabin," based, of course, on the popular book of the same name. As a teenager, a named George S. Parker became an avid game player, and played many of the W&S.B. Ives' games. He found "The Mansion of Happiness" to be too piously moral, but must have enjoyed Ives' games anyway. In 1883, in the year of Stephen's death, George Parker published his own board game, which was quite successful. That same year he bought the rights to W.S&B Ives, and formed his own company, which he called Parker Brothers, to manufacture and market games. Children of STEPHEN IVES and MARY PERKINS are: 48. 49.

Ives who enlisted 12//28.1864 in Boston. He was mustered in the following day as a provate in Company C, 1st Massachusetts Frontier Calvary Battalion (more commonly known as Co. C, 26th New York Calavary). This unit was organized specifically for Civil War service on the New York/Canada border. Private Ives is listed as present on company muster lists for the months of January through April 1865, and mustered out with his company June 30, 1865 at Camp Readville, MA. On elistment, Private Edward Ives stated he was born in Salem, MA and was a 21 year old bookbinder. Edward Ives, the soldier, would thus have been b. about 1843, a discrepancy of some 10 years compared to the supposed birth date of Edward Land Ives.

CHARLOTTE RHODA7 IVES (THOMAS POYNTON6, ROBERT HALE5, BENJAMIN4, BENJAMIN3, THOMAS2, JOHN1) was born 18 Dec 1792 in Providence, Providence, RI, and died 15 Jun 1881 in Providence, Providence RI. More About CHARLOTTE RHODA IVES: Burial: North Burial Ground, Providence, Providence, RI Notes for WILLIAM GILES GODDARD: William Giles Goddard was born in Johnston, Rhode Island, son of William Goddard and Abigail Angell. He graduated from Brown University in 1812 and began the study of law in Worcester, Massachusetts. He turned to newspaper editing as associate editor of the Worcester Spy, and in 1813 became the proprietor and editor of the Rhode Island American. He married Charlotte Rhoda Ives, 22 May 1821. In 1825 he began teaching at Brown, appointed professor of moral philosophy and metaphysics. He felt he had no aptitude for philosophy, and arrangements were made for him to teach instead rhetoric, the evidences of religion, and the constitution of the United States. He was appointed professor of belles-lettres in 1834. He took a more active interest than any of his colleagues in the Dorr Rebellion in 1842, at which time, according to President Wayland, "His essays for the daily press, during this period alone, would fill a moderately sized volume." He resigned in 1842 because of his health and died in Providence in 1846. Wayland wrote further of him: "The manners of Professor Goddard were courteous and refined. His personal habits, without being painfully exact, were scrupulously neat, and in perfect harmony with the character of a literary citizen. His conversation, sometimes playful, never frivolous, was always instructive, and at time singularly forcible, captivating and eloquent. His tastes were simple and easily gratified; and I think that he preferred a book in his study, or a conversation at the fireside with a friend, to any form of more exciting and outdoor enjoyment."

THOMAS POYNTON8 IVES, b. 17 Jan 1834, Providence, Providence RI; d. 17 Nov 1865, Havre, France; m. ELIZABETH CABOT MOTLEY, 01 Oct 1865, Vienna, Austria; b. 1838, Dedham, MA. Notes for THOMAS POYNTON IVES: Thomas Poynton Ives received his Ph.D form Brown University. Apparently quite wealty, he was a partner in the firm of Brown & Ives. At the outbreak of the American Civil War he offered his services to the federal government and on 15 May 1861 presented his yacht Hope to the government, refusing any compensation for his services. The yacht was detailed to the Treasury Department as a revenue cutter. His gift was reported in the New York Tribune article of 16 May 1861, and apears in other sources as well. Navy records, however, make no mention of the gift, indicating the U.S.S Hope was purchased 29 Nov 1861 in New York for the sum of $13,000. Thomas was commissioned a lietenant in the revenue service in 1861, placed in command of his former yacht, and ordered to blockade duty in Chesapeake Bay. His offer to build a vessal at his own expense

10

and present it to the government, providing he was commissioned its captain, was refused. He was commissioned assistance adjuntant-general in the state of Rhode Island, with rank of captain in November, 1861, and resigned his commission in the revenue service to accept the command of General Burnside's flagship, the army gunboat Picket, 11 January 1862. Picket was the smallest ship in the federal flotilla that supported Burnside's North Carolina expedition. Enroute, Picket was beset by a fierce gale off Cape Hatteras. General Burnside reported that "men, furniture, and crockery below decks were thrown about in a most promiscuous manner. At times it seemed the waves, which appeared mountain high, would ingulf (sic) us, but the little vessel would ride them and stagger forward in her course". Captain Ives' ship survived the gale to cover the Union landing on Roanoke Island, NC, in February of 1862, and also was engaged in the attacks of Forts Clark and Hatteras. They also supported Union forces during the Battle of New Berne, NC, on 16 Mar 1862. A report by General Burnside (OR I.9,p365) mentions a reconnaissance of Nag's Head conducted by Captain Ives and his ship, along with two companies of infantry, on 10 February 1862. He was promoted to acting masater, U.S. Navy and stationed at Aquia Creek, 3 September 1862. During 1863, he commended the U.S.S. Yankee, a gunboat assigned to the Potomac Flotilla of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron. Yankee patrolled the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers and upper Chespeake Bay, chasing smuggers and battling Confederate sinipers and shore batteries. During May of the year Longstreet's Confederates threatened Suffolk, VA, and Yakee was briefly sent south to reinforce Union naval forces on the Nansemond River. One of Captain Ives' dispatches to Admiral Lee, commanding the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, during this period is preserved in the official records. On Admiral Lee's recommenation, Thomas Ives was promoted to acting volunteer lieutenant for gallant conduct, May 26, 1863. He was promoted again to lieutenant-commander, November 7, 1864. Civil War Veteran. Thomas Poynton Ives was the olny son of Moses Brown Ives and Annie Allen Dorr. He is grandson of Thomas Poynton Ives and Hope Brown, a great grandson of Nicholas Brown I and Rhoda Jenckes, and a descendent of Chad Brown, one of the earliest settlers of Rhode Island, contemporary of Roger Williams. Among other things, Mr. Ives was owner of the farm on Potomomut Neck, now Goddard Park, at the time of his service in the Civil War. Goddard Memorial State Park is in Warwick, Rhode Island. He died in Havre, France where he had gone to take the steamship to America. In the War of the Rebellion he gave his yacht, the "Hope," and his personal services, without compensation, to the US Government, which were accepted; and Nov 7, 1864, his services to his country were acknowledged by promotion to lieutenant commander, with a leave of absence for 6 months. April 5,he sailed for Europe; but his impaired health developed a pulmonary diseas, and he never returned.

He married HARRIET BOWEN AMORY 03 Oct 1827, daughter of THOMAS AMORY and ELIZABETH BOWEN. She was born 04 Apr 1803 in Boston, MA, and died 10 Nov 1868 in Providence, Providence RI. Notes for ROBERT HALE IVES: Member, Brown & Ives, bankers of Providence, RI. Robert Hale Ives, son of Thomas Poynton Ives [1769-1839] and Hope Brown [1773-1855], began his mercantile career with Brown & Ives in 1816, and became a partner in 1832. He was active in establishing both the Butler Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital, and was a trustee of Brown University for 45 years. In 1827, he married Harriet Bowen Amory. Robert Hale and Harriet (Amory) Ives had four children, only one of whom survived past the age of 30. Their first child died in infancy. One daughter, Harriet Bowen Ives [1832-1860], died of consumption at the age of 28. A son, Lieut. Robert Hale Ives Jr. [1837-1862], died at age 25, of wounds suffered at the Battle of Antietam. Their eldest daughter, Elizabeth Amory Ives [1830-1897], united the Ives and Gammell families by marrying William Gammell in 1851, a man 18 years her senior.

ROBERT HALE IVES, b. 03 Apr 1837, Providence, RI; d. 27 Sep 1862, Hagerstown, MD. Notes for ROBERT HALE IVES: Early in the Civil War, Robert was commissioned a lieutenant in the Union Army. He served as an aide-decamp on the staff of Brig. Gen. Isaaac P. Rodman, who commanded an infanty division in IX Corps, Army of the Potomac during the Antietam campaign. He was mortally wounded in the fighting near the "Burnside Bridge" at Antietam 17 September 1862 and died 10 days later in a militia hospital near Hagerstown, MD. General Rodham was mortally wounded in the same action. After the war. a former senior officer of Rodham's division described finding the dying division commander and his young aide lying on adjacent cots in a field hospital just after the battle. Civil War Veteran: The period of his active service was less than ten days, and a single month did not elapse from the date of his commission to the day on which he received the wound that terminated his life. He was the only son of Robert Hale Ives Sr. and Harriet Bowen Amory. His early education was attended with every advantage which parental wisdom and care could supply, and his domestic training was conducted under influences the most favorable for inspiring generous sentiments and developing high qualities of character. His school and college days were passed in his native city, at whose university he graduated with credit, in 1857, at the age of twenty years. After completing his collegiate education, he twice visited Europe, where he spent two years in improving travel and study, for the purpose of extending and diversifying the intellectual culture he had received. On his final return, in the Summer of 1860, he engaged in active business as a partner in the house of his cousins, Messrs. Goddard Brothers, of Providence.

He married CLARA THORNDYKE RAND 10 Oct 1866, daughter of THORNDYKE RAND and HANNAH NURSE. Notes for GEORGE AUGUSTUS IVES: George Augustus Ives was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted 29 Aug 1862 at Salem, MA., giving his home as Salem. He was mustered in 12 Sept 1862 as a private in Co. H, 44th Massachusetts Militia Infantry. The 44th Massachusetts served for only 9 months. The regiment mustered in 12 Dec 1862 and moved to New Berne, NC in October. They operated in the vicinity of New Berne, fighting a number of skirmishes with small Confederate detachments, until 6 Jun 1862, when the loaded onto transports for the return voyage to Boston. George Ives seems to have spent most of his time in North Carolina on detached service as a steward in an Army hospital. He was detailed to duty in the hospital 8 December 1862 and apparently sent several months there, although the date of his return to the regiment is not documented. A company muster roll for the months of January-April, 1863 shows him on detached service, and a hospital muster roll for January and February 1863 shows him as present (and gives his rank as corporal, probably an error). Private Ives mustered out with his regiment 18 June 1863. Children of GEORGE IVES and CLARA RAND are: i. ii.

More About CHARLOTTE HOPE GODDARD: Burial: North Burial Ground, Providence, Providence, RI Notes for WILLIAM BINNEY: Hon. William Binney, son of Hon. Horace and Elizabeth (Cox) Binney, was born in Philadelphia, Pa., April 14, 1825. He was educated there, and entered Yale University, but was prevented from finishing his course by ill health, and left in his junior year. In 1849 he received the honorary degree of Bachelor of Arts from Yale, and in 1866 that of Master of Arts. He also received the degree of Master of Arts from Brown University in 1856. After leaving college, Mr. Binney studied law in Philadelphia, and was there admitted to the bar. He rapidly achieved prominence in his profession, and became known as a lawyer of considerable ability. In 1853 he removed to Providence, R. I., and there resided until he built his home in Newport, R. I., in 1883-84. He practiced his profession with great success in Providence until the year 1867. In this year he was the principal organizer and founder of the Rhode Island Hospital Trust Company of Providence, the first trust company organized in New England. He became the first president of the corporation, and held that office until his retirement in 1881, retaining his place on the board of directors until his death. During his residence in Providence, Hon. William Binney was one of the most prominent citizens in public life. From June, 1857, to January, 1874, he was a member of the Common Council and served as its president from 1863 to 1871, and during his service in that capacity drew up the present charter of the city of Providence. He was a deep student of economic, civic, political and social conditions, and wrote largely on these questions, in the newspapers of the city and State. Shortly before his death he wrote to the 'Providence Journal' a letter advocating a public market. Mr. Binney was at one time a member of the General Assembly of Rhode Island. Among interesting family heirlooms in his possession were an oil portrait of Avis (Engs) Binney, his great-greatgrandmother, and an excellent portrait of his father by Sully, and a miniature by Brown. Mr. Binney died April 23, 1909, at his home in Providence, R. I. The following appreciation of Hon. William Binney is taken from an article published after his death: 'For him not merely his college life at Yale in the forties, but repeated residences in Europe, as well as close association with some of the most eminent men of his time, supplied the educative influences which underlie and explain his career. With three of the New England colleges he was intimately linked, either by the personal tie of undergraduate study or by inherited interest, drawn from the earlier generations, and classical studies at all times made a strong appeal to him. And yet these were not the only studies nor the only interests which claimed his attention. The civic sense was at all times strong in him, and he found a keen pleasure - as more than once happened - to be able to render a signal service to the community. * * * The community can ill afford to spare one who, exemplifying these ancient ideals of scholarship, of gentle dignity, of reverence and sincerity, of honor and integrity, of sanity and good taste, has been living among us, quietly to be sure, but with a steady influence, nevertheless on his own time.' Mr. Binney married (first), June 14, 1848, Charlotte Hope Goddard, born ecember 1, 1824, died April 26, 1866, daughter of William and Charlotte Rhoda (Ives) Goddard, of Providence, R. I. He married (second), April 19, 1871, Josephine Angier, born March 25, 1840, daughter of Rev. Joseph and Elizabeth (Rotch) Angier, of Milton, Mass. Notes for ELIZABETH CASS LEDYARD: Elizabeth is probably interred somewhwere in Colorado Springs; this extract is from a letter taken from a time capsule, written by Samuel Le Nord Caldwell, M.D, July 1901. "The imposing shingle covered house on the N.W. corner of Cascade Ave. and Dale St. is occupied by Mrs. Elizabeth Cass Ledyard Goddard. She is a granddaughter of Gen. Lewis Cass, one of our great statesmen, who held many public offices and was defeated by Martin Van Buren for the Presidency. Mrs. Goddard is easily the leading woman of the city, being foremost in all good works, and ready to give of her money, time and strength to advance any good cause. Her house is full of family heirlooms, old silver, china, furniture, and bric a brac, and she entertains in finer style than anybody else. She is a woman of remarkable force of character, intensely patriotic and a born leader of men and women, with a tender heart, always open to a tale of distress. She is the President of the Society of Colonial Dames in Colorado."

MADELINE IVES GODDARD, b. 25 Jun 1874; d. 31 Mar 1931; m. MARQUIS D'ANDIGNE, 29 Dec 1906; b. France. Notes for MADELINE IVES GODDARD: Madeline Ives Goddard lived what might be considered a "double life." On one hand, she was born into an illustrious Rhode Island family and ultimately married a French aristocrat, living much of her life in a chateau in France. In her other life, however, she was a nurse trained at Rhode Island Hospital and stationed at various military installations during the Spanish-American War and World War I. Madeline Goddard, how became the Marquise D'Andigne, set up a Red Cross-like organization in France, and subsequently received many medals for her contributions to nursing. The experience proved critical to her later philanthropy. Already ill with cancer, Madeline Goddard returned home to Rhode Island, and died in 1931. In her will, she left $100,000 to The Rhode Island Foundation - to that point the largest donation ever made to the Foundation - as a "field of interest" fund for "the relief of incurables."

ROBERT HALES IVES GAMMEL, b. 06 Jan 1893, Providence, Providence, RI; d. 30 Mar 1981, Boston, Suffolk, MA. Notes for ROBERT HALES IVES GAMMEL: American muralist, portrait painter, art teacher, and writer on art. Robert was the youngest son of a prominent, wealthy, Rhode Island family. His parents were William Gammell, Jr. and Bessie Gardner Bowen Gammell. They had five children, three daughters, and two sons. Robert desired to become a priest, but his father forced him to study medicine. Instead, he studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and the Academie Julian in Paris. He studied with some of the most skillful painters at the turn of the century. He was a past president of the Guild of Boston Artists and a member of the American Society of Mural Painters. Just before he died he had an interview with a reporter. He referred to himself as a "fossil." Robert is known as a Classical Realist whose subject focus upon mythological, biblical, surreal figural works, portraiture, and landscapes. Robert is credited for having handed down centuries of artistic tradition that was taught by Tarbell and Benson to generations of students who have become successful in their own right. Robert has a significant place in the history of American art. He became a bridge. He spanned the chasm of modern art allowing the accumulated knowledge of classical art to pass over to the current generation. He died at his home in Boston. He was 88 years old. There are no immediate survivors.
