The area, which was first called Irbyville, later became Buckhead. A post office opened there on October 5, 1841, with William W. Sentell as postmaster. The post office was discontinued on December 8, 1842, but was reinstated on August 28, 1855, with Riall B. Hicks, Irby's son-in-law, as postmaster." p.231 "New county road commissioners also were appointed in 1840: Militia District 722 -- Britton Sentell, Thomas Farr and Henry Irby" p.297 The DeKalb Grand Jury handed down several indictments during the March, 1850, term and William W. Sentell served on this jury. p.298 "Roswell Road got its start on March 4, 1850, when the DeKalb County Inferior Court authorized John Isom, William C. Austin and William W. Sentell "to mark and lay out a road in DeKalb County commencing at the Shallowford Court Ground and running by the way of Peter Ball's, by A. Waits', by Sandy Springs Church, by the Bruce's Bridge on Nancy's Creek, intersecting with Decatur and Atlanta Road at Buckhead." On December 26, 1850, the Inferior Court granted a charter to the Atlanta and Dahlonega Plank road Company "for the purpose of constructing a Plank Graded on Macadamized road from Atlanta by Cumming through the County of Forsyth to Dahlonega." It has not been used for many years. The church was organized and built much later. Five graves are located in rear of the sanctuary and two just south. Sentell son of Nathan & Mary by LMMW of #150 The Carroll County, Ga. deed records have some interesting deeds recorded in 1857. In Book H page 539, the first deed is from Joseph E. Sentell and John T. (F ?) Sentell as executors of the estate of William W. B. Sentell to John T. Norton for land lot 139 in the 10 district of Carroll County. This instrument was signed in Coweta County. The next deed in order is one from DeKalb County dated June 23, 1843 where William W. Sentell sells B. Sentell (for $10) land lot 36 in the 4th district of Carroll County. The next deed in order of recording (now on page 540) was signed in Fulton County, dated April 9, 1857 where Martin Ball, William T. Waits, T. S. Abernathy and H. S. Pace acting as the guardian of Almeda Sentell convey to Benjamin F. Cox 4/5 interest in land lot 36 in the 4th district of Carroll County. On page 572 in book H is a deed dated Dec. 2, 1857 signed in Fulton County where John E. Sentell sells for $60 to B. F. Cox a 1/5 interest in land lot 36. Research from other sources I have says that Britton Sentell and Elizabeth Miles had a daughter named Nancy, married the William Waits, a daughter Caroline married John Lafayette Abernathy, and they were the parents of Almeda Abernathy, born 12 February 1857, and a daughter Martha who married Martin Ball. John E. Sentell is not listed as a son in this information. I have found a notice in an old Morgan County newspaper that one- John E. Sentell was the Administrator of the estate of Briton Sentell in DeKalb County. I feel sure the John E. Sentell who signed the deed is the same one who was a Methodist minister in Georgia from about 1850-1869 as they moved each Dec -Jan. John E. Sentell was at the Vienna and Dooley Mission in the Americus District in 1857 and was re appointed there for 1858. He may have returned home in December to visit family. 3 "Mrs. E. Sentell, was born in N.C. 1796, came to Ga. with her father's family in early childhood, and was married to Britton Sentell in 1816, who preceded her to the grave in 1846. She was converted and joined the church at Sardis, Fulton Circuit, GA. Conf. when a girl, and remained a consistent member until death. She reared 5 children, one boy (Rev. J. E. Sentell of the So. Ga. Conf.) and 4 girls, all of whom still survive and testify to her good works as a Christian mother, as she had been a widow since 1846, and did all the raising and training of this very pious family. About 12 or 15 years ago, after all her children were grown and married and her health very poor, she gave up house-keeping and lived with her children, mostly with Mrs. Waits, where she died April 19, 1881. It was the precious privilege of the writer to be her pastor in 1877-78 and to visit her often in her great age and infirmity. She was one of the meekest saints I ever met....." J. J. Notes for JOHN WILLIAM MCMURTREY: John W. and Amelia Waits McMurtrey lived in Buckhead and owned and operated a store there. John W. was also a Deputy Sheriff for Fulton County, Georgia. John and Amelia packed up and with their younger children moved to Windermere, Florida in 1911. Family tradition says that a Mr. Griffin owned a large sum of money and was unable to meet his obligations, so he deeded Grandpa McMurtrey his land holdings in Windemere, which primarily was planted in oranges.
