DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE E-Mail Newsletter May - October 2011

Volume 4 Issue 3

Message from the Physician-in-Chief, Dr. Kevin Imrie Dear Colleagues: This fall has been very busy in the Department and at Sunnybrook in general. I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on some of the key things we are working on: 1.

Occupancy: After a relatively decent summer and early fall, the hospital has been consistently above 100% occupancy since early November. Each of the services has implemented strategies to defer admissions, shorten length of stay and facilitate discharge and our consulting services have really stepped up to provide expedited access to outpatient services to help expedite discharges. Thanks for your continued efforts.

2.

Hand Hygiene: This is a real good news story. We continue to see improvement in hand hygiene compliance with the rate exceeding 80% for the first time this year. Adherence amongst staff physicians is now comparable to other professions. There is definitely still work to be done as the board has set a target of 100% and compliance amongst our residents and fellows still lags behind. Thank you for making this a priority.

3.

Recruitment: The board has approved the Medical Human Resources Plan we put together. Over the next year, this plan will see significant targeted recruitment to strengthen our academic programs and address areas of clinical need. The process is already well underway for those starting in July 2012.

4.

Partnership issues: The Sunnybrook Department of Medicine Partnership will be nearing its first birthday soon. Thanks to Chris Morgan, Wissen Tam and the Management Committee, things are going very well. The transition has been successfully navigated and last month we reached an important milestone by formalizing the process to gain access to Scientific Research and Experimental Development Program (SRED) tax credits and flowing over $1,000,000 of SRED eligible funding to SRI to support our researchers. We continue to work on improving financial reporting to the partners, consolidating the employment of our research staff within SRI, and formalizing our HR processes.

5.

Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act: Lastly, I wanted to briefly let you know about an important legislative change that could impact you. Recent amendments to Bill 122 which will come into effect January 1, 2012 will increase access of the public to hospital corporate records (not personal health information). We will be discussing this change at our upcoming executive meeting and will be providing information to each of the division heads to be shared with division members.

That is all for now. I hope to see you at our Holiday drop-in on December 13, 2011. Kevin
