A. About the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla was established in the year 1986 to begin a Bachelors degree in journalism and mass communication. The department and the courses were started to train the students as the need of media industry.

CHANGES MADE IN THE COURSES OR PROGRAMMES DURING THE PAST FIVE YEARS AND THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE FACULTY TO THOSE CHANGES
In the last year, two new courses named MMC and PGDMC started in the department of Journalism and Mass Communication. Both the courses have separate syllabus and different duration of time. PGDMC is one year Post Graduate Diploma for the students who want to join the field of media. On the other side, Masters in Mass Communication is the masters’ degree of two years. Above two programmes were started from the session 2008. 4.

LEARNING RESOURCES OF THE DEPARTMENT LIKE LIBRARY, COMPUTERS, LABORATORIES AND OTHER SUCH RESOURCES

The Department has no Departmental Library but the students use central library the department have 10 computers with internet connections to facilitate the students of all courses run by the department.

The department has its separate projector for the use of students.
C.
The laboratory is independent in terms of minor and routinely used equipment named teleprinter, cable connection.

ENHANCEMENT OF THE LEARNING RESOURCES DURING THE PAST FIVE YEARS
During the past five years, presentation of use of computers and LCD deconstruction of television and radio programme video camera audio recording and editing mock field reporting assignment reporting editing journal simulation of real life situation.

MODERN TEACHING METHODS IN PRACTICE OTHER THAN THE LECTURE METHOD
The specialized lectures by eminent outside faculty are regularly arranged in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication for benefit of the students. The students also join the presentations frequently to improve the lecture method. They use the latest equipments and softwares to presenting themselves. Our students engaged in following activities regular basis practical assignments seminar, projects, group discussion, audio visual productions, live simulation, interaction with media industry experts and mock reporting production of lab journal etc. 8.
PARTICIPATION OF TEACHERS IN ACADEMIC AND PERSONAL COUNSELING OF STUDENTS
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication maintains highly interactive and congenial environment in the Department. Students are encouraged with challenging assignment and industries interaction. 9.
DETAILS OF FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES AND TEACHERS WHO BENEFITED DURING THE PAST FIVE YEARS
The Faculty members of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication regularly participate in various Conferences, Workshops and Seminars, which are conducted at National or International levels. The faculty also delivered lectures on specialized topics. Professor T.D.S. Alok recently awarded for the national integration prize in the month of February. Prof. Vir Bala Aggarwal appointed as a member of UGC in various committees and Prof. TDS Alok appointed as visiting professor in Punjabi Agricultural University Ludhiana. Dr. Alok is also a external expert (member) in the various universities.

METHOD OF CONTINUOUS STUDENT ASSESSMENT Students knowledge needs and skill are tested through a combination of entrance test and personal interview by faculty and industry experts.

To start the Hindi Journalism faculty. Department is intend to start M.Phil course in the department. To establish a separate departmental library for students. Recruitment of additional faculty, technical and supporting staff. To generate resources for additional space and supporting infrastructure as scarcity of space is a major constrain in further development of the academic and research potential of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. 6. 22. ANY OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication has proposes setting up of The Faculty of Media Studies. Besides, the present Department is proposed to set up: Department of Electronic Media Studies Department of Advertising and Public Relations Department of Hindi Journalism Department of Printing Technology These five departments, under faculty of Media Studies, will offer specialization in various fields of modern media, so essential to excel in the present competitive world. As above proposed departments would One Professor, Two Reader and Three Lecturers technical/laboratory/administrative staff in each department. According to the tentative estimates made by the department need of Lab equipments, faculty library and accommodation also required.
