New Projects and Collaborations North and Central Florida Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Partnership (NCF-GWEP)

I

n July 2015, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Bureau of Health Professions, awarded the FSU College of Medicine through the Department of Geriatrics, a three-year grant totaling $2,250,000. Dr. Paul Katz, Program Director, and Dr. Ken Brummel-Smith are Co-Principal Investigators.

The NCF-GWEP will develop a health care workforce that maximizes patient and family engagement and improves health outcomes for older adults by integrating geriatrics with primary care. Six innovative projects provide the framework for the grant’s activities and allow for the creation of new service delivery models in addition to novel opportunities for interprofessional and interdisciplinary training and patient and caregiver education. The NCF-GWEP is anchored by the Department of Geriatrics at the College of Medicine in concert with the FSU Colleges of Nursing and Social Work, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, Halifax Hospital Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida Hospital in Orlando, Westminster Communities of Florida, Health Care Network of Southwest Florida, Isabel Collier Read Medical Campus in Immokalee, and the Alzheimer’s Project, Inc. of Tallahassee. Objectives Include: 1) Enhancing geriatric competencies for family medicine and internal medicine residents through the establishment of a primary care consortium. 2) Training caregivers of family members who have chronic illnesses, including dementia, to improve self-care techniques using a nationally recognized, structured training program. 3) Developing medical and social work students who can assess and address the health information needs of older adults through community-based programs. 4) Transforming the HCN of Southwest Florida, a federally qualified rural-based health center, into a high-quality geriatric care provider and educator.

5) Creating a novel interprofessional, geriatric-focused educational program targeting nursing, medical, and social work students. 6) Enhancing the geriatric competencies of nurses practicing in assisted living and nursing centers through the collaboration of nursing, medical, and social work faculty. Trainees for the six projects include the lay public; medical, nursing, and social work students; practicing nurses, social workers, and physicians; and family and internal medicine residents. The map below highlights the location of the NCF-GWEP core projects as well as their proximity to FSUCollege of Medicine regional campuses.

Optimization of “Powerful Tools” for Caregivers of Dementia Patients Recently funded through the Florida Department of Health, this grant totals $250,000. Under the leadership of Antonio Terracciano, PhD, the proposed project will examine the effectiveness and advance translational research of a caregiver-centered psychoeducational program for improving outcomes in caregivers and care recipients with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Developing Educational Modules for Physician/Attorney Collaboration on Behalf of Older Individuals Marshall Kapp, JD, MPH, in collaboration with Greg Turner, EdD, MBA, MPH, received a $40,000 grant through the Retirement Research Foundation to develop continuing professional education modules for physicians and attorneys on the topic of interprofessional cooperation on behalf of older patients/clients. This project will improve the quality of medical and legal services provided to older Floridians. To learn more visit our website.

Presentation Spotlight Tamara Marryshow Tamara Marryshow wins the Florida Geriatrics Society’s 2015 David T. Lowenthal Founders Award for her poster presentation on “Exploring Depression in Older Adults, Barriers to Diagnosis and Treatment.” Tamara traveled to Orlando this summer to present the results of her work with faculty mentors Ms. Suzanne Baker and Dr. Angelina Sutin and fellow student, Stephanie Poteau. This study examined the intersection of depression, stigma, treatment seeking, and personality factors in older adults. According to both her mentors, Tamara “has been a true pleasure to work with, an asset Tamara Marryshow, Class of 2018

to the research, and deserves this recognition.”

Lauren Jeck Medical Students and the Dying Patient: Reflections on Advanced Illness and Palliative Care by Lauren Jeck (MS2) Lauren Jeck had the opportunity to present her summer research project with faculty mentors Dr. Ken Brummel-Smith and Ms. Suzanne Baker during Grand Rounds on October 8, 2015. Her study examined student responses to the palliative care assignment completed during fourth-year geriatrics clerkship.
