The Denver Mint
The 1858 discovery of gold in the Platte River near Denver created a gold rush (and established the city of Denver). Shortly thereafter, the U.S. Mint moved to establish a facility nearby in order to assay the gold and create gold coins. Congress authorized its creation on April 21, 1862. The Mint opened for business as a United States Assay Office in September of 1863, operating out of the Clark, Gruber & Company facilities, but it would be more than a decade before they began minting coins. The ruggedness of the environment and the long travel times to the coasts made it difficult to transport precious metal coins, so the U.S. Mint became wary of creating coinage at the Denver Mint. In the meantime, coins were being minted at Clark, Gruber & Company. Eventually the U.S. government would purchase the Clark, Gruber & Company’s minting operation. The Denver Mint began producing coins for the United States and a handful of other countries in 1874. It would take another 21 years before the Denver Mint would be recognized as a fully functional, operating branch of the United States Mint. The designation was approved in 1895 and a site was purchased at the corner of West Colfax and Delaware Streets in 1896. Construction began in 1897. There were a number of setbacks and the Assay Office was not able to move into the new building until 1904. It would take another two years for the Denver Mint to begin producing coins from the new facility in 1906. The Denver Mint has grown, upgraded, and rebuilt a number of times over the last century. Today it is the single largest producer of coins in the world!
