From the Editor

On March 24, there was an unbelievable news report. The famous weather groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, disappointing many people as a long winter continued after his prediction of an early spring, was indicted by a prosecutor in Ohio. He suggested Punxsutawney Phil should be persecuted for negligence of duty. No one could prove this weather forecasting tradition from the nineteenth century is science or superstition. Most likely, this news will end up being just a comic episode. Nevertheless, it shows that people are frustrated and felt helpless with the extreme whether conditions now prevalent everywhere. Their panic reaction even went as far as blaming and scapegoating the poor animal. Coincidentally, the UK is facing the coldest March over the past five decades, a further evidence that extreme weather is ravaging all over the world. In order to stop climate change from deteriorating, energy conservation and carbon reduction are the most urgent task shared by mankind. The "Ring of Celestial Bliss" we displayed at the Taiwan Lantern Festival 2013 was an attempt to remind more than 12 million visitors of the importance of energy conservation and carbon reduction, as well as to further publicize our brand spirit: "Smarter. Greener. Together." During the lantern festival, the "Ring of Celestial Bliss" drew the attention of the international media. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited 50 foreign diplomats and representatives in Taiwan to visit the exhibition. They all admire our pioneering efforts and involvement in "sustainability". Besides the lantern festival, there are several in-depth reports about Delta in the current issue of Brand News. This year, the 5th Delta Innovation Award was significantly renovated, from the application to evaluation. By a vigorous and systematic assessment framework, the management hopes to further encourage new ideas and innovation within the company. In this issue, this major overhaul of the Delta Innovation Award is covered in the "Special Report". Do you know how many languages are spoken and how many countries are covered by EMEA? In the "Brand People", EMEA President & GM Jackie Chang will share with you the opportunities and challenges the cultural differences within Europe brought to the regional branding of Delta EMEA. Also, Jackie will explain to you how EMEA improved internal communication and promoted employee coherence in the recent transformation, as well as the new opportunities opened up by our product diversity and manufacturing advantages. IABG initiated in 2009 an important production-sales project called CPFR (Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment). By systemically integrating information, CPFR has helped to consolidate the partnership among customers, distributors, branches, and business units, shorten lead-time, reduce stock revolving length, and enhance shipping fulfillment. The "Brand Academy" in this issue will cover the team and uncover their key to success. From this issue on, the "Delta Green Life" column will introduce "ecotourism" to tell you the latest and the most eco-friendly ways of travel. There will be more wonderful ideas about eco-tourism in the following issues of Brand News. So don't miss them!

Delta Innovation Award: best of the best Promote interdepartmental cooperation through systematic assessment According to Bruce Cheng, founder of Delta Electronics, "Strive for change, and pursue sustainability" are the core values of Delta culture. In fact, they are what have driven the continuous improvement and development of Delta over the past 42 years. The Delta Innovation Award was established in 2008 and has been running for five years. The Delta Innovation Award Summit was held on March 29 at the Delta Taoyuan Plant III and significant changes have been made to application and assessment. In this issue, we will explain the revolutionary changes of the Delta Innovation Award and the effect and benefits of these changes on Delta’s long-term strategy. At 9:00 a.m. on March 12, a videoconference was being held at the conference room on the second floor of Delta Headquarters in Taipei. On the other side of the link were Delta Taoyuan, Wuhu, Shanghai, Thailand and Dongguan. Delta executives were sitting in front of the camera, ready for the final assessment of the Delta Innovation Award. The executive team from Taipei included Mr. Bruce Cheng, Chairman Yancey Hai, Vice Chairman Mark Ko, and CEO Ping Cheng, joining the conference to assess the winning teams of the Innovation Award this year. During the 5-hour long conference, judges heatedly discussed the work of each finalist and eventually five teams were selected as the winners.

Systemic promotion of innovation to promote the cultivation of talent Mr. Yancey Hai, Mr. Mark Ko, Mr. Ping Cheng, and Mr. Johnson Lee attended the award ceremony in person on March 29 to approve the efforts in innovation and the contribution of employees. After four Delta Innovation Awards, the executive team of Delta made some changes to the award last October, so as to select innovative work within a more systematic framework. Continuing the aims of past awards, the three new aims of the present Delta Innovation Awards include: 1) Providing a better assessment mechanism to honor the efforts and technology innovation of employees. 2) Promoting interdepartmental cooperation and exchange to fully demonstrate team spirit. 3) Enforcing talent cultivation for second-generation officers to be more involved in headquarters affairs and broaden their horizon. These aims all correspond to the Delta brand spirit: Smarter, Greener, Together. Although the categories and assessment methods have significantly changed this year, the ultimate aims of the award remain unchanged.

The 5th Delta Innovation Award Summit The award this year falls into three categories: Product (Technology) Innovation, Manufacturing Innovation, and Process/Business Model Innovation. Each category has an independent evaluation committee, whose chair is appointed by the Delta executive committee. Next, each chair invites four officers from dif ferent business units to form the five-member committee, which establishes the assessment criteria of individual categories. Brand News

Special Report

The aim of reforming the assessment system is to promote interdepartmental cooperation among business units with less exchange opportunities. "This is a team-based award," maintained the executive committee. "It is the same for the contesting teams and the officers of the committee. Successful innovation work must not be completed by one person or one department. The Delta culture encourages 'team innovation'. We encourage employees to find innovative ideas through cooperation with other units." Besides interdepartmental exchange, the operational team has considered one important thing "Officers must train themselves to make decisions from the viewpoint of the executive team and improve their leadership and integration abilities," added the executive committee. "With the reformed assessment mechanism of the award, we hope to cultivate elite mid-level and higher-level officers to be more involved in related activities organized by headquarters by appointing them to be judges. This way, they can learn how to change their own way of thinking and measure the innovative ideas proposed by the contestant teams from a higher point of view, so as to determine if these innovative ideas can benefit the long-term strategies and development of Delta."

Record-breaking contestant teams after worldwide publicity As significant changes were made to the Delta Innovation Award this year, publicity was also given within the worldwide Delta regions. As a result, the number of contestant teams was the highest since the award was launched. Apart from DGC and DEI which have been actively participating, DET, Delta India, DES, and DES Bern signed up for the award this year, making a total of 48 teams. This revealed the self-motivation and efforts of Delta employees worldwide. Ninety percent of the teams competed for the Product (Technology) Innovation and Manufacturing Innovation categories, including winners of past awards. However, the committees specifically emphasized "Process/ Business Model Innovation" this year, hoping to help Delta develop a unique and competitive value chain. Last November, Materials Management Director Eton Lee of the Power Solutions business group (BG) was appointed the chair of the committee for the Process/Business Model Innovation category. When establishing the assessment criteria for the category, Lee and his team defined a concept developed in the 1990s: “Business model innovation is the most profitable innovation, as it enhances 'efficiency' and "effectiveness' significantly." However, it is not easy to jump out of the box to rethink everything. According to Lee, "The business model is endto-end and cross-functional. We need to bring value to customers in all parts of operations. If this succeeds, the effectiveness is tremendous. If the target or method is incorrectly set right at the beginning, the success of model innovation is questionable."

Smart green life with continuous innovation Among the five winning teams this year, three were involved in product (technology) innovation and two in manufacturing innovation. Although there was none for process/business model innovation, Lee still approved of the innovation made by the contesting teams. According to him, more training and experience sharing from an external source will surely stimulate employees to make different kinds of innovation. He hopes that there will be more teams running for the business model innovation next year, so as to keep all employees fresh. Looking to the next Delta Innovation Award, committees unanimously suggest that the three innovation categories and assessment criteria should be better defined to allow the most favorable assessment of the contesting work and a full display of the effort of employees. Also, inter-regional and inter-plant participation should be encouraged to stimulate the innovation DNA of Delta through inter-regional and interdepartmental brainstorming and exchange. This is a good way to create a smart green life together.

Delta photovoltaic plant in Slovakia In 2012 Delta Electronics Slovakia decided to invest into the construction of a small photovoltaic power plant in order to preserve the environment, energy and in order to present, test and further develop Delta products and solutions. The photovoltaic power plant consists of two bi-axial trackers that are fitted with 30 photovoltaic panels (225 Wp) which have a total output of 6.75 kW. Bi-axial trackers allow for horizontal and vertical rotation. The trackers are controlled by an astrological system called "Sigma", which changes the positioning of both axes step by step at prescribed intervals. The time intervals for both axes are different depending on the time of the day and the year. Compared to fixed devices, rotating devices increase the annual production of energy by approximately 30%. The Delta's green energy photovoltaic power plant with a rated power of 6.75 kWp produces about 8,642 kWh of electricity per year. This amount will cover the annual energy consumption of two ordinary households that do not use electricity for heating. The photovoltaic power plant will save in one year 19,416 kg of coal, 10,296 kg of CO2 etc.

AFE wins additional orders from world-class port The active front end (AFE) 2000 of Delta Electronics has recently been successfully operated in world-class port for one full year. This meant that many world-class ports have placed additional orders for the AFE2000, which has won customer recognition for its stability, high performance, outstanding power management, and energy-saving effectiveness. The AFE2000 has also become a successful example of port application of Delta's power quality products. After repeated communication with customers, Delta GreenTech China (DGC) developed the high-power 250kW AFE2000 for port application with the R&D and talent advantages of Delta Electronics, its parent company. The AFE2000 is an energy feedback device for realizing four-quadrant operation with an inverter proposed by Delta's Industrial Automation BG. Teaming up with Delta, DGC designed the corrosion-proof, rainproof, and dustproof IP65-grade cabinet for port and dockyard applications. Considering the high-temperature and direct sunlight in summer in container yards, DGC has equipped the container with an industrial air-conditioning system. The ventilation effectiveness of individual components has been considered in the cabinet's interior design. Computer virtualization was applied to locate the optimal structural design, including the ease of installation and maintenance, and unitary cabinet design. The AFE2000 was successfully accepted in April 2012. The actually measured energy recycling rate exceeded 50%. Customers placed additional orders to cover a bigger port area in January 2013. This suggests that the future of Delta's power quality products in port application is promising.

Four northeastern provinces complete grid upgrade with Delta's DVCS With world-leading display and control technology, Delta's distributed video control system (DVCS) enjoyed success in the recent grid upgrade in four northeastern Chinese provinces: Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, and Inner Mongolia. The DVCS has successfully helped these provinces to upgrade their power command dispatch, and monitoring systems. With the innovative use of online video collection, processing, and transmission technologies, Delta's DVCS has successfully overcome the distance limits of video signal transmission. Also, the DVCS can completely display wide quad high definition (WQHD) images in real-time on the wall-mounted SCADA. Delta builds 20.7MWp rooftop PV generation system with high-power inverters Delta successfully built the 20.7MWp rooftop PV generation demo system in the PV Park of DMEGC Magnetic of the Hengdian Group with the 500KW high-power PV inverter (without isolation transformer). DMEGC Magnetic is a technology-oriented private enterprise and leading magnetic business in China. It combines manufacture, operations, science development, technology R&D, and information service. In order to develop a new energy strategy, DMEGC Magnetic invested in the 20.7MWp rooftop PV generation demo system in 2012. The project used 1MW as a generation unit for grid connection to step up the inverter output (270V) to 10kV before grid connection. DGC supplied four 500KW high-power inverters in dual 1MW unit deployment for grid connection. As the connection device between solar cells and the grid, the PV inverter plays an important role in the PV generation system. This 500kW PV inverter from Delta uses no isolation transformation, with a peak conversion rate of 98.5%. At present, the PV inverter has passed a series of stringent tests, including the 1MW medium-voltage grid connection debug, inverter installation, ventilation channel remodeling, and field grid connection debug. This PV inverter received positive feedback from customers as its generation efficiency is comparable with the standard of homogenous products made in foreign countries. Delta built the 20.7MWp rooftop PV generation demo system for DMEGC Magnetic.

Turning barriers into boosters: culture fusion Jackie Chang, Delta EMEA's President and General Manager, talks about the challenges and opportunities in regional branding Snow was covering the Netherlands in the spring of 2013. Compared with the freezing quiet outside, the Delta EMEA Kick-off Meeting was bustling with heated activity. In the conference venue, Delta EMEA President and GM Mr. Jackie Chang and 90 representatives from different parts of Europe discussed product and market trends for 2013 in English, the lingua franca of the conference. Outside the conference, however, English was not the only language heard.

Multiple cultures complicate transformation The EU has 23 official languages in addition to minority languages. Although there are many, the number cannot compare to the 100 common languages spoken in Africa. Multiple languages are the Jackie Chang, Delta EMEA President and GM, product of the vast EMEA and represent the cultural diversity of talks about the opportunities and challenges of the region. Such diversity also symbolizes the challenges and branding in multiple cultures opportunities of branding. Chang maintained, "Unlike in the past when we could use English manuals for the whole world, now in Europe, English manuals can only be used in the UK." On top of culture, the process of transformation is another problem. Before Chang chaired Delta EMEA in 2010, EMEA was the production and OEM base of Delta. Although Delta acquired the telecom power solutions business of ASCOM in 2003 - later changed to Delta Energy Systems (DES) - to improve capacity in high-level power system R&D and complete a worldwide service network, real in-depth integration only began a few years afterward. From manufacture to branding and from product sales to system integration service, they were all new challenges to Delta, which was used to supplying key components and subsystems. The integration of the telecom power solutions business was the most impressive aspect of the transformation process. After taking up the presidency Chang was challenged with how to lead the telecom power solutions business that had long operated in branding, strengthen its sales foundation and combine it with the diversified product and manufacturing advantages of Delta.

Easing doubts with sincerity and encouraging employee coherence Delta had long been accustomed to single product manufacturing in OEM operations; it was not easy taking the first step. In particular, it took time for employees of the telecom power solutions business to become familiar with the Delta culture and develop faith in Delta products. "At the beginning of integration, many employees thought that the management had sent us to shut down the factory and lay them off," recalled Chang.

Delta EMEA restructured and merged in 2010 and Chang started a series of product conferences and training/ education programs to integrate the existing products of all Delta business units. On the one hand, these were launched to enrich the product knowledge of sales personnel; on the other hand, Chang repositioned products with market potential based on employee feedback. "Over time, employees gradually realized that we were in the same boat, and we were there to help them develop competence and keep their jobs. At the end of 2012, Telefonica, a leading Spanish telecommunication company, accepted our proposal and implemented our LED energy-saving lamps. Although the sales amount was not big, it was encouraging for employees and proved that we were on the right track."

New situation with cross-selling and solution integration After chairing Delta EMEA, Chang introduced the cross-selling concept. In recent years Delta has developed a lot of quality products for high-performance energy systems, green energy solutions, and video integration solutions that were awaiting a proper market. However, it was easy to get sandwiched with one single business in the telecom power solutions business as Chinese competitors kept cutting prices and European and U.S. suppliers entered the market. Chang encouraged employees to try cross-selling with different products, so as to provide customers with more comprehensive solutions. "It was a benefit all situation for Delta, sales personnel, and customers. We also received a rather positive response from partners and channels," affirmed Chang. In addition, to cope with the transformation strategy of Delta, Chang formed the Solution Integration Team (SIT) at Delta EMEA in 2011 to provide internal and external customers with integrated solutions and an energy conservation consultation service using Delta products. "With experience accumulated over the last couple of years, we have gradually come to understand the business model of this area and the value chain of this market and posited the value of Delta in the process." The contribution of SIT was realized in success cases such as a complex energy solution for Somaliland in Africa, a green data centre in Poland, and EV charging solutions for the Ishavsveien charging network in Norway.

Coordinating business units to meet market demand Besides reaching an internal consensus within the region, branding needs to strengthen cooperation between regions and BGBU to prepare for component manufacture. "The market has different demands for branded and OEM products. A ready product includes a marking plan, channel network, inspection labels, and a product introduction." Missing any aspect will mean an incomplete product for customers, and this will have negative effect on the Delta brand. If this continues, "what took years to build could collapse overnight !" Early this year, Chang implemented a new business introduction review to bridge the gap between regions and BGBUs that would coordinate the preparation work for a new product launch and ensure that the new product

meets the market's expectations for a ready product. In addition, the support and quality certification of BGBU and products that are not produced or under development by Delta were outsourced, "If channel and network deployment succeeds, it will be comparatively easy for Delta to replace these products with Delta products."

Retaining talent through respect, support, and communication Over the last couple of years, new product and new business promotion were added to the key performance indicator (KPI) and for the encouragement of sales personnel. After the learning and adaptation period, it became an official KPI that comprised 10%. In the introduction process, Chang maintains respect for different cultures and different ways of thinking. "Maybe it's because I was a liberal arts major, I like to spend time understanding human nature and how people fee." Treating employees like family, Chang talks with employees each time he enters the office and never stops, even when he goes home. "Putting yourself in other people's shoes is the key. If we force people to do something, resistance arises. Retain talent for the organization with 'respect', improve the core competence of talent to create more value with full 'support' , and develop mutual trust with employees through continuous communication." This is the management method of Chang. In 2012, Chang travelled to a different city nearly every week for business. In Europe for nearly 20 years, he has lost count of how many flights he has taken. Looking at the EMEA map, this vast region covers the Arctic Circle to the Equator, with a climate ranging from the extreme cold of northern Europe to the extreme heat of the deserts of Africa and the Middle East, and there are countless religions and languages. To Chang, although EMEA is the source of many challenges, he has faith that he will be able to cultivate countless opportunities with Delta EMEA.

Grasping for the best opportunities through production-sales collaboration IABG shares its successful experience in promoting CPFR In 2009 Delta’s Industrial Automation Business Group (IABG) initiated its CPFR, an important project promoting production-sale collaboration. Through systemic information integration, the IABG deepened its partnership among customers, distributors, branches, and business units to shorten lead times, minimize inventory turnover length, improve shipping fulfillment, and enhance production efficiency. In the current issue of Brand News, we interview the CPFR project team to share their key to success and strategic thinking.

Enhancing partner competitiveness by minimizing uncertainty CPFR is an acronym for Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment, which is a popular topic in supply chain management. With IT systems, CPFR can reduce the overall supply chain's uncertainty and thereby enhance partner competitiveness.

"The CPFR concept is simple. It is like the interactions among a car owner, service center, dealer, and supplier," explained IABG's Sales & Marketing VP Mr. Andy Liu. "When a car owner takes his car to a service center to replace a part, he wants to have his car back on the same day. In this case, the service center must have different kinds of spare parts in stock to fulfill the customer’s demand and grasp the business opportunity. Dealers wish to minimize stock while still fulfilling the order demand of service centers. Suppliers simply wish dealers could accurately forecast demand, so as to schedule production to minimize production cost."

In the past, in the absence of a transparent, collaborative, and real-time information integration platform, a production-sales imbalance arose when a customer suddenly increased his order. If a factory was unable to handle this increased order, it lost an opportunity. Or, when a factory kept replenishing products to the market after peak customer demand had passed, the excess supply became dead stock. In this process, each unit makes a one-sided decision, and this is not the optimal solution from the viewpoint of the overall supply chain. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the stock of the U.S. retail supply chain in 1997 was about US$1 trillion. If a full-scale CPFR had been implemented, the stock would have been reduced by 15-20%, or US$150 billion to US$200 billion. Wal-Mart and Warner Lambert, which pioneered the system, successfully improved order fulfillment from 87% to 98% and increased sales income by US$8 million. In the past, as the IABG gradually expanded its sales network, the extension of new and old product lines also brought considerable challenges to the functions of the business unit. Liu explained, "When forecasting sales in the past, sales personnel provided non-integrated stock and sales forecast information. It was difficult for sales personnel to compare stock, undelivered orders, in-transit orders, and other forecasts on the same platform. Likewise, factories were unable to check the latest sales and stock status. As a result, although sales were reduced and stock increased, factories continued to prepare materials and produce and ship products based on previous forecasts. Or, when sales personnel shipped products in massive quantities, there was a stock shortage,

unclear sales forecasts big quantity differences in customer orders high stock volatility low shipping fulfillment non-integration of system information asynchrony of upstream and downstream supply chains

and in the absence of timely adjustment of forecasts, factories were unable to prepare materials for production. Apart from failing to fulfill customer demand, the inability to synchronize and manifest production-sales information can result in low production efficiency, which further affects lead times. Production-sales asynchrony was the main source of disputes."

Key to success: Full communication and discipline In 2009, IABG gathered its sales, material, procurement, factory, and IT departments and branches to assess the objectives, scope, and contents of the project. The IABG also invited external advisors to participate in discussions and compare the practices of benchmarked businesses. Finally, a solution appropriate to the operation model of the IABG was proposed, and the 3-year CPFR project began. The CPFR was first implemented for Delta Greentech China (DGC) and Taiwan distributors, as they commanded about 70% of IABG’s revenue in 2010.

However, was there difficulty at the beginning of implementation? Liu pointed out, "There are always comments on new processes and systems. However, full communication and discipline was the key to success. We believe that 'people' are the key to demonstrating the value of systems and processes." "One year after implementation, the system effectively helped DGC to reduce its inventory turnover from 90-100 days to 35-45 days, which has been maintained even up to now," recalled section manager Miss Eilleen Wu. "At the beginning of implementation, stock and lead-time were the targets. We were glad all targets were achieved at the first stage. This strengthened our faith and reduced resistance in promoting the subsequent stages of the project." The successful experience at the first stage was subsequently reproduced in European, U.S., and Indian branches in 2011 and further implemented in Japanese, Korean, and Brazilian branches in 2012. In fact, the IABG has established a situation management mechanism to accurately capture global sales, stock, and production status with reports produced daily or weekly to provide a reliable information source for management to draw up related policies.

Building an information platform to enforce long-term strategies

IABG's Sales & Marketing VP Mr. Andy Liu shares the CPFR promotion experience

Liu emphasized, "The CPFR is only part of the long-term operational plan of IABG." In the highly competitive industrial automation business and the vast channel network, the system allows IABG managers to make long-term strategies more carefully and cautiously. According to Wu, "The CPFR allows the IABG, branches, and channel partners to make sales forecasts, order forecasts, and stock management closer to market movements and make suggestions for decisions based on historical data. Gradually, PMs can spend their valuable time on adjusting product portfolios and cultivating market opportunities."

The CPFR system also brought other benefits to the IABG. "A global warehouse is the mechanism the IABG has wished to build for a long time. With transparent production-sales information, we can dispatch products more efficiently to shorten lead times and enhance order fulfillment. With the CPFR, we have made a big step forward," said Liu confidently. Wu added, "In the past, when we shipped products to branches, they needed to assume responsibility for their sales and stock management. Now, branches in different parts of the world can capture real-time production-sales information for cross-branch dispatch. For example, when a product is out of stock in Brazil, we don't need to ship the product from Wujiang, we can dispatch it from Europe or North America. The CPFR simply combines the entire IABG together." In addition, there was one important change. "Productsales conflicts among departments were significantly reduced with the CPFR, and the IABG has become a more competitive organization," smiled Liu.

CRM for future operations Apart from the global warehouse, IABG was among the first to participate in the CRM implementation, hoping to effectively capture pipeline business opportunities and to more accurately forecast sales. "After completing the CPFR, CRM and global warehouse, the IABG wishes to establish a call center platform to optimize customer service. This will be accomplished gradually in the next 3-5 years, so that it can expand to become a leader in industrial automation." After adjusting their long-term strategy, many business units began to contact sales network management while facing major customers in the direct-sale model. As it takes a long time to explore with significant uncertainties, the successful CPFR experience of IABG has provided a great example. When we asked IABG's advice for other business units, Liu and Wu modestly replied, "Information platform design is the outcome of optimization, our experience is also the result of exploration and assessment. Our choice is the solution 'best suited' for IABG market competition, operational needs, and business processes. The biggest benefits come from clear targets and the correct choice of solutions."

Google co-founder Sergey Brin previews glass: A little freaky at first, but you’ll get used to it !

BBC: Taiwan tests recycling's limits The Miniwiz built the e-waste plant with one of Taiwan's largest recycling companies, SDTI.

In his TED talk, Brin confessed that, having used Glass, he felt emasculated and isolated every time he checked his regular smartphone.

The factory under construction is set to process and recycle the electronic waste generated by the island's consumers and its numerous technology companies. "We want to take recycling to the next level," said Arthur Huang, the founder of Miniwiz. "Not only will this factory do the usual e-waste recycling, extracting gold and copper from your discarded computers and smartphones, but it will be built completely out of recycled materials."

"You're actually socially isolating yourself with your phone," Brin told the audience. "I feel like it's kind of emasculating…. You're standing there just rubbing this featureless piece of glass. In contrast to a smartphone, Google Glass allows people to keep their head up as digital information is overlaid onto their world, no matter where their gaze is pointed."

GT Ding, chief technology officer of SDTI says, "If you dump your computer in your back yard, its components will leach and poison the environment and people living nearby. The island, just 36,190 sq km (13,973 sq miles) and with a population of 23 million, produces more electronics per head than any other country. And that is especially important here in Taiwan."

"My vision when we started Google 15 years ago was that eventually you wouldn't have to have a search query at all — the information would just come to you as you needed it," Brin said. "This is the first form factor that can deliver that vision."

The future plant's ceilings will be built out of plastic left over from CDs and DVDs, while the walls out of glass fiber from computer motherboards. It is going to be the highest environmental standard of any recycling factory in the world.

"G oogle G lass will help f ight the antisoc ial and 'emasculating' habit of compulsive smartphone checking," said Google co-founder Sergey Brin at the 2013 TED Conference.

Story of the "Ring of Celestial Bliss" at Delta Green Life Pavilion The Green Life Pavilion in the Delta Electronics Yang-Kuang Building Taipei is a brand new exhibition space. The Story of the "Ring of Celestial Bliss" was launched on February 6 and was the opening exhibition of the Green Life Pavilion. It is a full record of the "Ring of Celestial Bliss" sponsored by Delta Electronics Foundation at the Taiwan Lantern Festival 2013. Delta Electronics' display and lighting integration solutions were also displayed at the exhibition to faithfully present step-by-step the hard work of Delta Electronics' team. The Story of the "Ring of Celestial Bliss" included four zones. This five-month permanent exhibition will continue to display the effects of the lantern festival and further promote the meaning in environmental education of the "Ring of Celestial Bliss."

"Origination and Design" zone: the manuscript of J. J. Pan and the model of the Ring

1

The "Ring of Celestial Bliss" displayed at the Taiwan Festival Hsinchu 2013 is 10m tall and nearly 70m wide. It was designed by the famous J. J. Pan & Partners, Architects, and Planners. Apart from introducing the design concept and the selection of green materials (bamboo, steel structure, and recycled PET plastic) of the Ring, the manuscripts and architectural drafts of the Ring by Pan were displayed in this zone. In order for visitors to experience the outdoor projection effect of the Ring, Delta specifically made a 1:30 model of the Ring and used four QUMI micro projectors to edge-blend the images, so as to represent the film at the festival.

The "Ring of Celestial Bliss" is the first building in Taiwan to pass the "building carbon audit". Teaming up with Professor HsienTe Lin of the Department of Architecture, NCKU, Delta calculated carbon emissions through the entire lifecycle of building. The results show that the Ring reduces carbon emissions by 80% compared to ordinary reinforced concrete buildings. The green materials of the Ring at the lantern festival were also displayed in the zone. These included the steel structure, bamboo wall, bamboo flooring, and recycled projection screen. The interactive whiteboard in the zone composed of short-throw projectors and infrared sensor frames from Delta introduced the concept of carbon audit with digital content to make the exhibition more interesting.

"Delta Display and Lighting Integration Solution" zone 5

The "Ring of Celestial Bliss" was realized with the display and lighting integration solution from Delta Electronics. In this zone, Delta's 30,000lm high-level DLP projectors and QUMI micro projectors were also displayed. The significant size difference of these two products brought a sharp contrast. In the lighting zone, the LED strips and LED lamps used at the lantern festival were displayed. The changes of LED strips were demonstrated with a projection on the bamboo wall. The Story of the "Ring of Celestial Bless" runs from February 6 to June 30, 2013. You are welcome to join us.

About Ecotourism < Text by Michael Hsieh >

Spring is the season for travel. Have you begun planning your trip? Have you ever thought of combining "carbon reduction" with travel plans? From this issue onward, Brand News will share with you the "know-how" of ecotourism in "Delta Green Life". In this issue, let's find out what "ecotourism", a new term emerged since a few years ago, means.

What is Ecotourism? In terms of word-formation, you will naturally associate the word "ecotourism" with ecological tours such as hiking. In fact, it is a "sustainable" travel concept. According to the International Ecotourism Society, the principles of ecotourism are as follows: 1. Minimize environmental impact. 2. Respect the tradition, culture, and privacy of local people. 3. Provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people by using local service and transportation. 4. Focus on nature experience. 5. Invite local instructors to help tourists better understand host countries’ political, environmental, and social climate.

Enforcing Ecotourism For example, if you stay in hotel chains and buy food from convenience stores, you are unable to provide direct financial benefits for local businesses. If you can stay in local hotels and dine at restaurants run by local people and consume local foods, you can reduce the cost and carbon footprint from food transportation. Also, by purchasing local agricultural products and cultural souvenirs, you can provide direct financial benefits to the local economy and thereby promote local community development. When you learn from local people, accept their guided tours, or appreciate local historical monuments or conservation outcomes, you can motivate local people to safeguard and cherish beautiful things more eagerly. This will also encourage other countries to follow suit, so as to benefit travel, conservation, and local development all at the same time.

"Ecotourism" & "In-depth Tourism" The emerging "in-depth tourism" also coincides with the above five principles of "ecotourism": deep involvement in local life, respect and understand local culture and natural environment. US write Alice Steinbach is enthusiastic about short-term travel and stays in different places and learn local skills. For example, by learning Japanese dance and Japanese tea ceremony in Kyoto, she learned the cultural attraction of this ancient capital of Japan. Next in Scotland, she trained with a Scottish collie to learn how to command a dog. Then in a cabaret in Havana, she tried the hot and energetic salsa. Steinbach changed her "tight-scheduled" tour by reducing the number of spots and the radius of travel to save more time and travel expense to deeply experience local culture and the beauty of nature. Although there was no plan in her travel, each trip had countless wonderful moments. If you want to learn more from Steinbach, try her book Educating Alice: Adventures of a Curious Woman. Next time, why not try "ecotourism" ? Each choice for food, clothing, accommodation, and transportation can positively benefit your trip and the local people. Delta employees travelled to Namasia, Kaohsiung, Taiwan and experienced the production of preserved plums
