Case Study
Issue
Aeration Efficiency
Cleaning frequency of aeration diffusers and its impact on operational costs (energy use), and capacity were identified as sub-optimal.
City of Windsor
Upgrade Queenston WPCP Regional Municipality of Niagara
Wet Weather Flow Control Plan Woodward WWTP City of Hamilton
Operator Training Japan Sewer Works
A 20% increase in flow rate capacity was required to meet local community growth. Additionally, a solution for the plants’ denitrifying induced foam and scum accumulation problem was required.
Solution GPS-X was used to model and optimize the aeration efficiency and associated costs using field data.
Sizable annual financial payback
A frequency of 12 months between cleanings was deemed to be optimal for both current and future flows.
Identified aeration capacity for increased flows.
GPS-X modeling determined that the plant could achieve the required capacity increase by converting to an anoxic/aerobic system and that the construction of additional tank volume would be avoided.
Total upgrade cost significantly reduced.
GPS-X modeling provided confirmation that this solution would resolve the foam and scum issue. This plant services a combined sewer system and is required to treat significant wet weather flow volumes. New regulations require the City to reduce untreated combined sewer overflows and at the same time reduce treatment effluent loads. Hydromantis developed a plan for controlling wet weather flows to meet these new regulations.
Hydromantis and Kurita Water Industries of Japan were appointed to develop a new training system that closely links process theory with interactive dynamic simulation in an integrated training environment.
ROI
GPS-X evaluated operational and capital options for increasing treatment capacity. A flow rate of 610 ML/d was determined to be the treatment limit for the existing plant.
ROI multiple = 83
Post implementation: Effluent limits consistently met. Energy saving obtained. Severe foaming and scum accumulation resolved.
The proposed upgrade plan will ensure that the facility meets new wet weather control guidelines.
For flows in excess of 610 ML/d, a new wet weather treatment system was proposed. Capital and footprint options were evaluated. Retention treatment basins and ballasted flocculation processes were identified for pilot testing. The GPS-X interface was customized and plant layouts and training lessons were developed. This allows trainees to propose and test operational programs by entering relevant operational data. GPS-X calculates the response and allows trainees to dynamically view the resulting plant performance then assess and refine their operational solution.
People Development. Customized interactive operator training resulting in enhanced operational responsiveness and costs. This system is actively used at JS to train approximately 200 operators per year.

“If you need a sophisticated and comprehensive wastewater modeling and simulation tool, look no further than GPS-X from Hydromantis. The intuitive interface and outstanding documentation of GPS-X had me up and running quickly and I find myself always returning to this tool. It didn’t take me long to realize my decision had been made - my choice was a professional version of GPS-X.” Rick Fuller Director of Technical Services Ondeo Industrial Solutions
+ Severn Trent Water - Global + San Antonio Water System - U.S.A. + Yorkshire Water - UK “The Hydromantis GPS-X software has proved to be an excellent tool not only for wastewater plant design and process simulation but also in the realm of operations training. By reviewing simulations with the operations staff at a particular facility and demonstrating the graphical results from changing various parameters in the process the operator gains a better understanding of the plant process. Personally, I have found that I learn something new with each model that I have constructed. GPS-X has also been especially helpful in the start-up of new facilities by predicting a closer range of initial operation as opposed to the traditional textbook/industry calculations and recommendations." Advanced Tools
This module uses GPS-X’s graphical interface to custom-design your plant layouts or modify existing process flow diagrams. The Analyzer automates the task of performing sensitivity analyses on model parameters in either steady-state or dynamic simulations. This module assists you in optimizing your plant operations. For example, you may want to determine the best air flow distribution in an activated sludge tank to optimize effluent quality and minimize aeration costs. The Optimizer can also be used to automate the model calibration process, where one or more parameters are fine-tuned so that the predicted and measured data fit more closely.
This package includes the Dynamic Parameter Estimator (DPE) and Advanced Control Module. The DPE optimizes time-varying model parameters. For more information regarding advanced applications involving linkage of online data to GPS-X, please contact Hydromantis. (
