The Mountain View Presbyterian Church Newsletter November/December, 2016 During this holiday season and beyond… As the Apostle Paul wrote to his friends in Philippi, “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” When we look closely at scripture, we find God’s picture of what it means to be in partnership with his work for the sake of the gospel. In the church context, we are not called to be something we are not, but to know we serve a missionary God who calls each of us using the skills, gifts and talents we possess to share the good news of Jesus with the world, our world right here in Scottsdale. God calls each of us to be involved where he has already been at work preparing people, loving them and bringing Christians into their lives. It doesn’t take much except a desire to follow Christ and speak of our faith if it is appropriate and timely. We also need to be aware of what’s going on in our congregation, imagining how our congregation can be involved in God’s activity in the world and an awareness of what God has already been up to with us. With the fall season upon us, we are quickly racing toward the holidays. Because of the generosity of Mountain View members and friends and a missionary heart for the people God brings to our lives, the Mission Team is again offering us many ways to serve our community for Thanksgiving, Christmas and beyond. Bringing food for the Manna Closet or the Thanksgiving food drive will help families in Scottsdale have a good meal and an opportunity to celebrate. In mid-November, we will again be able to choose a family from Vista and give them gifts hoping to show the real Gift of Christmas. And for each of us as we enter this busy season, I pray that we will be filled with joy and thanksgiving as we share with our neighbors and each other God’s greatest gift to us in Jesus Christ. Pastor Lyn

Advent Devotionals

“Good News for All the People” written by Rev. Dr. Timothy L. Smith But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord.” Luke 2:10-11 “It is the design of the 2016 daily Advent devotional to assist you in celebrating God’s wondrous good news. Each day’s reading concludes with a few reflection questions and a spiritual practice, The Daily God Hunt. We pray that this devotional will help you each day during Advent to ponder, savor and be in awe of God’s astounding good news of great joy!”

“Multiply the Ministry” Stewardship Update

First, thank you to each of the 255 families and individuals who have returned their Estimate of Giving card offering totaling just over $950,000 for 2017 to help Multiply the Ministry for Mountain View. It can help the planning process greatly if those who feel comfortable doing so will complete their estimates. Prayerfully, Your Stewardship Council

MOUNTAIN VIEW PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH invites you to join our community of Christ.

Class will be held in January. Watch for sign-ups in the near future!

The Bible is the best-selling book in history, but how many people in Scottsdale are actually reading it? A Gallup survey reports the average American household has four Bibles. However, research by Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life (2008) found that only 16 percent of Americans read the Bible every day. Mountain View is hoping to reverse this trend, starting with our own congregation. Your pastors believe that The Story, a Zondervan best-seller, is the right tool to increase Biblical literacy; helping readers understand God’s story from Genesis to Revelation and how their own stories intersect with God’s. Consisting of 31 chapters of carefully selected scriptures sequenced in chronological order, The Story presents the word of God in an engaging format, reading like a novel. With thousands of participating churches nationwide, The Story is becoming a movement that is bringing wide-ranging benefits to local churches. Many have reported increased community outreach, increased Biblical literacy, congregational growth and a greater understanding of how God’s story reveals the reasons for the things that happen in our story. Our journey through The Story continues through Sunday, May 14 at all worship services. The Adult Ed. video series continues through Wednesday, May 17 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary. Books are still available for $5.00 so you can read along. Visit the Welcome Center table.

Many have reported increased community outreach, increased Biblical literacy, congregational growth and a greater understanding of how God’s story reveals the reasons for the things that happen in our story.

STEPHEN MINISTRY

Perhaps you have been pondering how you can become a more active member of our church community. If so, we would like you to consider becoming a Stephen Minister. If you are worried that you may not have the skills, rest assured, you will receive all of the training and support you need to be comfortable in this role. You may find that you can use the listening skills you learn in class in other aspects of your life. Many have said, “I wished I’d had this training a lot earlier.” Our pastors have a lot of work to do: funerals and weddings, sermons, visitations, administering the church and providing educational programs for all of the church family. Stephen Ministry provides lay people with a unique opportunity to extend the work of the pastors. Not only will you be providing a service to your church community, but you will find it will enrich your spiritual life. Won’t you think about joining our next class beginning in January? The application form will be available soon. Also, please keep us in mind when you or someone you know could benefit from the confidential Christian caregiving of a Stephen Minister. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY MISSION BEGINS JANUARY, 2017 Sign-ups have begun in the Courtyard on Sundays.

Seeking a better life, the Sarray family moved to the US in 2012 to escape the dangers and threats of fatal punishment from ISIS in Baghdad, Iraq. They are US citizens and look forward to their dream of homeownership. They currently live in a rented, twobedroom apartment in Tempe where they have safety concerns, and the place is poorly maintained. They will work with our Presbyterian Coalition and other groups to build their new duplex home in Tempe. The Father, Nawres, works as a sales consultant in an electronics store and the Mother, Mina, is a homemaker. They have a daughter, Marine, who is four, and a son, Eisa, who is two. They are a multi-lingual family speaking Arabic, Caledonian, and Kurdish languages they learned in their home country. They have expressed their gratitude for our assistance in their home building project. Please contact Judy Weiler with questions, [email protected]

THE ROCKY POINT, MEXICO MISSION TEAM THANKS YOU! Our team of 36 mission trip participants recently spent a weekend serving together and “Living Our Faith” in the Rocky Point community. We would also like to thank the Mountaineers for donating sports equipment, Hands for Mission for contributing beautiful afghans, and the Children’s Ministries Sunday School classes for collecting Spanish children’s books and school supplies. The Meal Ministry provides a tangible opportunity for church members to express their love and care for our church body. Prayer Chain - The prayer chain is a very important part of spiritual life. We all need to reach out in prayer. If you have a prayer request or would like to join the prayer chain, please complete a request card, or call the church office. Please remember, the integrity of the prayer chain and the requests are confidential. Gabriels - Gabriels are always needed to greet the members for all services. Please call the church office to be put on the schedule to have the wonderful experience of meeting and greeting the congregation. Deacons also set up and plan receptions for all needs, set up coffee every Sunday and help with new members and communion. Family FIRST Sundays Continue… The first Sunday of every month is Family First Sunday. On Family First Sundays, Mountain View will not offer Sunday School for our 3rd-8th grade students and instead give families an opportunity to attend worship together and participate as a family in the Sacrament of Communion at our services. Research tells us that almost nothing has more spiritual impact on a child or a teenager than being a part of an all-church worship service. While we believe in our Sunday school and kids’ worship ministries, we also want to give families some carefully carved out space to worship together. Along with our worship services, every Family First Sunday will offer an opportunity for families to enjoy fellowship together—breakfast from 10:30-11:15 am in Meredith Hall. We hope you can join us!

Parents, if you want to join us, we would love that too! On November 20, we are having an organization come and talk to our students about Sex Trafficking. We realize this can be a tough subject to learn about, so attendance is optional. However, we encourage all students to go. This presentation will be to give the students a general understanding of what sex trafficking is, how to protect themselves/others from potentially dangerous situations, God's heart for justice, and how to combat sex trafficking on both a physical and spiritual level. We realize that this information is also important for parents, so during the Summit presentation (10:45-12) there will be another presentation just for parents. The same organization, Red Light Rebellion, is going to be speaking to both audiences: students and parents. This is a really awesome opportunity to be able to hear the presentation and then talk to your students about it at home.
