Technology Recently there have been major developments in the world of Software Defined Radios, which we’d like to cover more thoroughly in MWN. At the moment I’m lacking a good article summarising the current state of the art (volunteer author please!!!). There is much excitement surrounding a new Italian receiver called the Perseus http://www.microtelecom.it/perseus/ and also a novel and innovative software development called Splat Away by Jurgen Bartels http://dx.3sdesign.de/index.htm?splatter_killer.htm This is a great example how the next generation of receivers is stimulating innovation. I’m on the look out for contributions on the new wave of SDRs!

Richard E Wood MW DXer extraordinaire and former MWC member Dr. Richard Wood died of a heart attack on September 25, 2007. He was 67. Dr. Wood recently reactivated his MW DX activities in Hawaii. "He had been living in Hawaii in recent years," wrote BADXer Mark Connelly. "In the last few years he re-activated his MW DXing and even won an NRC contest last winter. He had numerous Beverages and an R75 receiver. Latin Americans, of which he received many, were a main interest but he also did well to all of the Pacific and Asia, including numerous Middle East logs at distances in excess of 12000 km. His contributions to the NRC and IRCA bulletins and his helpful advice to less experienced DXers will certainly be missed. Somehow he never really got into the computer age, otherwise he would have definitely made big contributions to the discussions and loggings on this list." On the Radio Netherlands Worldwide Media Network Weblog, Andy Sennitt wrote, "Dr. Richard Wood was one of the most experienced mediumwave DXers in the world, and his was one of the names I heard most often in my early years as a DXer in the 1960's. He was also a contributor to the World Radio TV Handbook and its offshoot, How to Listen to the World. A native of Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, Dr. Wood taught at several universities in the United States, as well as in Norway and Saudi Arabia, and was a remarkable linguist, which helped him enormously in his chosen hobby. He later settled in Hawaii, from where he was able to log some very rare mediumwave stations, and remained an active DXer right up to his death." I have a fairly recent five page hand-written letter from Richard which gives a good profile of his life & DXing career. Richard originally hailed from Dundee in Scotland but started DXing in 1957 in Newcastle and subsequently took up US citizenship in 1984. After Richard retired from teaching he ran a mail-order coffee business selling pure Kona coffee from Hawaii. I recall seeing Richard’s DX logs when I first edited MWN and was always astonished by what he could achieve. RIP

Finally Before I sign off for another month I must thank everyone who has contributed to the Circle in 2007. Thanks a lot. Without your efforts the Circle just wouldn’t exist. I wish you all a peaceful and radio-active Christmas holiday season. See you again in 2008! 73s

Steve

SHEIGRA DXPEDITION REPORT 6-19 October 2007 - with Alan Pennington, Dave Kenny & Tony Rogers Receivers

Tony Rogers Alan Pennington Dave Kenny

AOR AR 7030 Plus and Palstar pre-amp AOR AR 7030 Plus and Palstar pre-amp AOR AR 7030 Plus and tuneable pre-amp

Aerials (all long-wire beverages using 7-strand 0.2mm wire supported on 4-5ft bamboo canes) 45 degrees 620m beverage-terminated Far East 85 degrees 500m beverage-unterminated Middle East & Asia (+ Caribbean off the back) 190 degrees 450m beverage-unterminated UK LPAMs & West/Central Africa 305 degrees 640m beverage-terminated North America *330 degrees 500m beverage-terminated Alaska & West Coast North America *from evening of 13th Oct DXpedition Report The last DXpedition to Sheigra back in November 2004 suffered the aftereffects of an ionospheric storm and such were the poor conditions, only four North American medium wave stations were logged during that fortnight! So three years later, we were somewhat reluctant at first to make the long drive north again to this remote North Western corner of Scotland. But the dual temptation of sun spot minimum conditions and the always compelling scenery of Sheigra won through. Above: Dave fixes the Alaskan beverage to the earth rod on the shores of the lochan north of Sheigra. Thankfully little changes up here and we were soon at home again based in Mary’s comfortable cottage that has now been used for four DXpeditions. The original cottage used for DXpeditions for many years sadly still stands empty and neglected and no longer available for holiday rentals. One thing we did notice different on arrival in Sheigra was the absence of sheep – just one forlorn sheep on the surrounding hills. However our hopes of not having to repair aerial wires damaged by woolly quadrupeds this time were raised prematurely as two days later a large flock was shepherded down from the next village and made themselves at home in the fields crossed by our North American (& later our Alaskan) aerial. We were sure they’d been waiting for our arrival! The next few days we suffered some bad breaks on these aerials, though not all down to sheep we discovered. At 11pm one very windy night Dave & Tony were out on the hillside repairing yet another aerial break when two pairs of red eyes were spotted in the pitch black. Torches revealed big stags watching the proceedings – deer and DXers both ran (in opposite directions)! Our aerial wires are high enough off the ground for sheep to pass under, but not deer, which probably explains the major damage on three consecutive nights when the wires had multiple breaks and were torn out of numerous canes. This was the earliest in the MW DX season that any of us had been to Sheigra and we enjoyed very mild temperatures with some fine calm sunny days. Also not much rain (& mainly overnight) and only a couple of really windy nights which made walking the aerials to check for damage each day very pleasant. In contrast to the DXpedition back in November 2004, there were no ionospheric disturbances throughout the two weeks. And being close to the sunspot minimum we were rewarded with very low A & K indices. This yielded excellent daily medium wave reception from the Far East with Japan, China and Korea fading in from 5

about 1430 UTC until swamped out by European signals around 1800 UTC. There was also consistent reception from North America with east-coast stations fading in before 2200 UTC and not fading out until around 0930 UTC. By midnight stations from further afield could often be heard - such as the southern and mid western states. There were brief openings to the Prairies, West Coast and Alaska some mornings until about 1100 (see logs below). After our first reception of Washington and Alaska on the morning of 13th on our 305 degree beverage, we added an extra 330 degree beverage targeting British Columbia and Alaska. This aerial could also serve as a back-up if the deer struck again! It was not the deer that thwarted our listening on a couple of mornings though but local electrical interference from adjacent cottages. The resident population of Sheigra totals just five we estimate, though holiday lets can increase this threefold. And cottages have digital TVs, computers, dishwashers & washing machines like elsewhere in the UK so weak late morning North American MW signals disappeared beneath local QRM on a couple of mornings. We also noted a lack of variety in the day-to-day reception – the constant conditions favoured the same areas of North America each day, even the same stations, with very little South American or African reception on MW or shortwave throughout the two weeks. Shortwave was generally unaffected by interference and one notable highlight was reception of Wantok Radio Light from Papua New Guinea, audible on 7325 kHz most mornings around 1100 on the Asian aerial. There was also a trace of the new Micronesia-based Christian station on 4755.25 kHz around 1600 on two afternoons but not strong enough to hear a definitive ID. The lack of Latin American and African reception on shortwave was disappointing but not surprising, with conditions favouring Asia and North America. Although the Asian and southern aerials run straight out of the cottage onto the open moorland, the two North American beverages have to cross an (albeit seldom used) public road and run across private land between the neighbouring cottages before reaching the open hillside. We are most grateful for being allowed to do this, and also for being able to leave the aerial canes in one of the sheds: we certainly hope to be back before too long to make use of them again!

Above: (left to right) Tony, Alan and Dave with three AOR 7030 'Plus' receivers atop three Sony Minidisc recorders to capture the DX. Each person can switch between the array of five beverage aerials that radiate out from the cottage. Amplifiers can also be added to boost weak signals if needed. When not DXing at Sheigra we walked to the fine sandy bays nearby or upto the cliffs or hilltops (essential to get mobile ‘phone reception here!). A couple of obligatory visits were made to the Fisherman’s Mission in Kinlochbervie to sample their excellent local haddock & chips! Sadly no real ale at the bars in either the Rhiconich or Kinlochbervie Hotels we discovered though! 6

A great two weeks of listening, and reviewing our mini-disc recordings on return may yet reveal additional catches to those listed below. As always, notable loggings or UK Firsts are highlighted in bold:

New Zealand in Clashmore with Martin A Hall

e-mail: [email protected]

Introduction Steve Whitt asked that I write a little bit about how I came to hear 1080 Newstalk ZB from Auckland, reported in last month’s DX Loggings. Two years ago I reported the reception in Clashmore of 1500 KUMU from Hawaii, which was the result of a long and carefully thought out campaign, but as you will read, the reception of the first New Zealander to have been heard in the UK since 1933 couldn’t have been more different.

The Lead-in Despite a run of low K indices, when I started DXing at 0515 on the morning of 24th October 2007 conditions seemed rather poor, with east coast North Americans and Caribbean area Latins coming in not particularly well, and with quite a lot of Eurosplatter present. However, by 0700 the band had opened slightly to the west coast to bring in 950 KJR, 1000 KOMO, 1130 CKWX, and 1410 CFUN, but these rapidly became weaker, and were gone soon after 0800. Next there was a weak opening to the prairies from about 0820 to 0945, and Ontario and Chicago stations also came up a little during this time. Alaskan stations appeared from 0900, peaking nicely around 0945, fading out rapidly from 0955, leaving KBRW in and out of the noise until at least 1430. Presumed 920 KSRM and 830 KSLD were fair around 0950, but had disappeared completely by 1000 – a good, but not spectacular opening.

A Mystery When there’s an opening to Alaska, as a matter of routine I check the channels I’ve already logged stations on, as well as checking the channels of those Alaskans I’ve not previously heard. And it was while checking 1080 kHz for previously heard KSLD in Soldotna AK that I heard a mystery station. Those of you who read my first posting the MWC e-List will know that I wondered if this was a spurious, since on first listening the accent sounded to be English, and there was a reference to Huddersfield – but there are no UK stations listed for the channel! Who could it be?

Some Detective Work I regularly swap audio clips with Andrew Brade to check unusual IDs and UNIDs, since our ears appear to work in complementary ways, and this was no exception. So I have Andrew to thank for figuring out what I’d heard – in his own words: “When I listened through it, my first impressions were that it was not USA or Canada, and if anything it sounded antipodean. I heard the ID, something weather forecast, but despite listening several times at various speeds I couldn’t work it out. I thought at first that what I later discovered was “ZB” might have been the end of the word “University”. Earlier in the clip I’d also noted some names mentioned in a sporting context. I gave up on the ID part in favour of tackling the names to see if they would yield any clue. The first name I heard was “Gary Kimble”, but this didn’t tell anything. I heard a mention of “high tackle”, so thought that it was likely to be related to rugby. I then worked out the other names (Andrew Chalmers and Adrian Morley). This led, via an internet search, to New Zealand vs England and controversy about the lack of a suspension being handed down to the British player. The subject Medium Wave News 53/07

matter indicated that the station might originate in a Commonwealth country (we can forget France!); the accent indicated the Antipodes, the fact that they mentioned the NZ personnel without reference to their own country but did mention Great Britain all pointed towards this being from NZ (or possibly from Australia). I picked up the WRTH and looked at NZ and 1080, found the name “Newstalk ZB”. I listened to the ID again and all the earlier fog was immediately lifted! I think that one can hear the word “Auckland” at the start of the weather itself. The last part of the puzzle was solved when I realised that the Kiwi pronunciation of “Kemble” sounds like “Kimble”, so the third name was Gary Kemble. I entered the three rugby-related names into Google and the solution was completed with a NewstalkZB article on the sporting controversy mentioning the three names. Finally I sent you a rather bland e-mail with just enough information to allow you a little of your own detective work before the truth dawned. So there you are”. The final log therefore became:

1080

Newstalk ZB, Auckland, New Zealand; report “Gary Kemble Fpks has joined his boss Andrew Chalmers in condemning … decision not to cite Adrian Morley for a dangerous … Morley has been cleared … Morley is now free to play for Great Britain in Sunday’s … in Huddersfield”, then “Newstalk ZB weather watch 24/7”, wx; tnx AB for picking out the ID; UK FIRST

1004 24/10

For anyone who wants to hear it, the clip is at: http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/clashmoreradio/audio/1080_ZBAuckland_1004-24Oct07.mp3

Final Thoughts The printed great circle maps I have on my shack wall are based on London, and show Auckland at a bearing of roughly 20 degrees, which would put it outside the main lobe of my 338 degree antenna. It was only when I created a great circle map based on Clashmore (see above) that I realised Auckland was almost exactly due north from here, on a bearing only about 10 degrees east of that for Nome, and within the main lobe of the beverage. Reception of Newstalk ZB was by chance – I just happened to be listening in the right place at the right time. But it does confirm my belief that we increase our chances of hearing unusual DX if we spend a lot of time listening, even if the band appears closed. To be honest, I never thought that New Zealand could be heard in the UK, even though it’s regularly reported in northern Norway by our friends at Kongsfjord. I shall be keeping a close eye out for what they are hearing, and will be checking the NZ channels regularly in the future! From the Newstalk ZB website:

Quinta Provincia AM is a new station operating on 1320 kHz in Partido de La Matanza in the Greater Buenos Aires area. The station was first reported heard by Norberto Pugliese. At least on November 20 Quinta Provincia AM was still testing, with occasional station identifications between pieces of romantic music. Radio Ciudad de Lanús, previously on 1320 AM, has moved to 1020 kHz to escape the interference caused by Quinta Provincia AM, an unlicensed station. Another new station AM Panamericana has been heard on 1510 kHz with programming aimed at the Bolivian community of Buenos Aires. It broadcasts from the same studios as Estación Latina (FM 91.9). Its address is Pasaje Espinillo 1449, Planta Alta, C1407ISA, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Telephone numbers are (011) 4683-3641 and 4683-3642. (Marcelo Cornachioni in Conexión Digital on November 25).

WORLD NEWS (Europe, Asia, Africa) with Ton Timmerman

H. Heijermanspln 10, 2024 JJ Haarlem, The Netherlands e-mail:[email protected]

Dear friends, Here we are again with news and tips from the world. It is interesting to see that medium wave DX’ing is getting more and more a worldwide happening during the sunspot minimum which we are nearing soon. Experienced DX’ers say the best reception will be the two years after the minimum.... So we have a nice future the coming years!! Lets go to the news and tips now.

Albania Albania off-frequency. Medium Wave Fllaka heard in New Hampshire USA, and measured on exact 1457.626 kHz after 2300 UTC. 1457.626 Fllake Nov 9 at 2320 UT. Het against 1458 kHz, measuring 1457.626 kHz, signed off at 2330 UTC (Bruce Conti,USA, mw-offsets yahoo group)

Armenia A problem with the transmitter on 864 and 1350 kHz is giving off a sound of about five seconds or more like a ``phff`` and a ``piu``. Noted between 1610-1810 on 864 and 1815-2000 on 1350 kHz. (Rumen Pankov, Medium Wave Report, BDXC-UK via DXLD)

Bangladesh Radio Bangladesh is not heard after the cyclone hit Bangladesh. 4750 kHz, 693 kHz MW (1000 kW) etc. used to be heard well here in Hyderabad before. On 4750 Chinese station is heard while on 693 kHz an Iran station is heard this evening. On 7 MHz Amateur band, a Bangladesh Amateur Station Mr. Maju with callsign S21AM was reported by Amateurs in Kolkata operating today daytime with low power on battery (not heard at my station due to band conditions). (Jose Jacob, , National Institute of Amateur RadioHyderabad, India via DXLD) Radio Bangladesh is noted back on air on 4750 but 693 is still off. (Jose, 1246 UT Nov 17, ibid.) 4750 was noted back on air when I checked at around 1230 UT, 693 still missing. At around 1205 UT, VU2CSV, Deep from Kolkata was noted in QSO with S21DM, Himayat from B'desh on 7045 LSB. Exchanged usual info's on cyclone. S21DM informed that he is absolutely fine. VU2CSV informed that some of the Kolkata hams are in touch with High Commission of B'desh regarding permission to move into cyclone hit areas of B'desh with their HF equipment for help. VU3SUY & VU2DPD also joined later on. S21 & Kolkata hams normally operate on 7045 during 0100-0200 UT. Regards. (Alokesh Gupta India via DXLD) 693 was also noted back on air at around 1250 UT with female announcer announcing that they were off the air due to power breakdown. (Alokesh Gupta, India, via DXLD) Here is my monitoring of the Bangladesh Betar MW frequencies from Kolkata with ICOM R75 and 25 m Long wire: 18th November 2007 evening (1700-1710 UT) and on 19th November morning (0100-0110 UTC): 558 kHz Khulna, 630 kHz Dhaka, 693 kHz Dhaka, 1080 kHz Rajsahi, 1053 kHz Rangpur, 873 kHz Chittagong. 19th November 2007 morning (0100-0110 UTC): 963 kHz Sylhet, 846 kHz Bogra 19th November 2007 evening (1400 UTC): 999 kHz Thakurgaon (Supratik Sanatani, Kolkata, via DXLD)

China 1521 kHz: The Hutubi 500 kW CRI transmitter in Xinjiang, NW of Urumqi, seems to have several directional arrays at its disposal. It is off for two minutes for antenna switching from 1257, 1457, 1557, 1657, 1757. The sign off is at 1957. (Olle Alm ARC MV-Eko via BC-DX via DXLD)

France/ Monaco Radio Maria France is audible for a few days now on 1467 kHz with s/on at 0500 UTC. [http://www.radiomaria.fr/ ] ( Patrick Robic via mediumwave.info) Since November 1st, there is a new station on MW 1467 kHz from Col de la Madone. It's Radio Maria France, from 0500-1900 UT on 1467 kHz and also 24/24 h on FM 95.4 MHz. Adresse is: Radio Maria France, B.P. 42 F-06341 La Trinité Cedex, France. Info @ radiomaria.fr http://www.radiomaria.fr (Christian Ghibaudo via DXLD) RMC Info stop all MW relays in France. Now only on 216 kHz and FM. By the way Beur FM is on the air on 1584 kHz from Perpignan. (Christian Ghibaudo via DXLD)

Germany 153 longwave. Engineers of T-systems Telekom DLF Donebach LW 153 kHz are preparing the antenna of 20 kHz width for DRM mode services in past six days. Transmitter is off totally or on test in AM and DRM mode between 0710 and 1700 UT approx., and at 1210-1900 UT on Nov 15/16. Both two 500 kW Telefunken beasts of 1981? at Donebach are replaced by new TransRadio transistorized 500 kW units. Antenna alignment action last from Nov 8th til 16th (Wolfgang Büschel, wwdxc BC-DX via DXLD)

Greece John Babbis forwarded this from DXLD 7-134 to Demetri Vafeas of ERT: “According to observations sent to me, ERA SPORT seems to have taken in use the old VOA Kavalla transmitter on 792 kHz (// 981 kHz). Can anyone confirm? Kind regards, (Herman - http://www.emwg.info Boel, Nov 4, MWC via DXLD)” and this was the reply: Dear John, all, The explanation is as follows: 792 kHz is transmitted from Malgara, west of Thessaloniki together with 1179 kHz, via a combiner through the same antenna. 792 kHz is using a HARRIS 100 kW transmitter, transferred to ERT by IBB, years back. An identical transmitter is operating in Corfu (Kerkyra) for at least 4 years by now. The reason that the second transmitter was not activated earlier, even though it was in Malgara, was the fact that different management level at ERT were unable to agree on the operating frequency. After VOA, at 792 kHz, was ceased in Kavala about 2 years ago, the officials found another, very clear frequency, so they activated it. (Demetri Vafeas, Dipl. Electrical Engineer, Deputy Supv., New Technologies Dept., R. & D. Directorate, General Directorate of Technical Services, ERT S. A., Office : Messoghion 432, Aghia Paraskevi Attikis, GR-153 42 GREECE via DXLD)

Laos Lao National Radio - updated information. There's a bunch of links on Lao National Radio's web page http://www.lnr.org.la/lnr_aboutus.php Comments by Alan Davies: Vientiane has been using 640 kHz for a few years, replacing 702 kHz, but unfortunately for DXers it was only operating in local daylight at 2330-1000 UTC last time I checked. I suppose there's a faint chance it could be detected in Europe around the 2330 sign-on. I believe the 10 kW 640 kHz transmitter is the unit that used to carry LNR International Service on 1030 kHz. I've never been able to hear Khammouane 765 kHz, and suspect it may beinactive. It was definitely not on air when I visited the Thai city of Nakhon Phanom, just across the Mekong, which would have been in 1999 as I recall. In the past few years I've checked 765 quite often from various

locations in Laos and neighbouring countries, but have never heard a Lao station on that frequency. In WRTH 2008 I've marked the listing as "unconfirmed". Oudomxay's listed MW frequency is 800 kHz 1 kW with a Chinese transmitter, rather than 705 kHz as mentioned below, so probably 705 is a mix-up with Luang Prabang. In any case, I believe Oudomxay has been inactive for several years on MW and is now on FM only, based on information from recent Internet sources. Luang Prabang has been heard much better at night over the past few years on 705 kHz than it used to be, so the story about the new 10 kW transmitter is very credible. For some reason they decided to stay on the split frequency (Alan Davies, Asia via ARC MV-Eko via BC-DX via DXLD)

Libya Voice of Africa`s short news summaries in Swahili, Hausa, English and French which used to follow immediately after the news in Arabic at various times, appear to have been discontinued. These were carried within the Arabic service on MW 1251 and 711 kHz as well as intermittently on various SW frequencies. News in Arabic is still aired at 15 minutes past the hour, but for the past 3 or 4 months I have not heard anything other than Arabic (Dave Kenny DX News BDXC-UK)

Mongolia The transmitter on 164 kHz was doing about the best I've heard it this morning, from about 1255 to 1315 UT. 209 also heard but always poorer due to the NDB clutter (Steve Ratzlaff, USA via IRCA)

Netherlands Arrow Classic Rock stopped music on 675 kHz and replaced it with a recorded message loop listing FM frequencies. Later they restarted music again. At the moment it is not clear what is going to happen with this frequency. (Various sources and own observation)

Russia R. Rossii, Mayak, Yunost and Orfey are domestic networks. There are three foreign service programmes: Voice of Russia World Service (Golos Rossii, Vsemirnaya Sluzhba, VOR) in Russian and many other languages Radiokanal 'Sodruzhestvo' (Radio channel 'Commonwealth', RKS) in Russian only Russkoye Mezhdunarodnoye Radio (Russian International Radio, RMR) in Russian only. VOR WS has the full ID in Russian as follows: "V efire vsemirnaya russkaya sluzhba radiokompanii 'Golos Rossii'", for RKS and RMS please check WRTH. All three FS programmes may share the same frequency, for example 1215 kHz has the current schedule as follows: 0500-0700 RMR to the Baltics, 0700-1530 RKS to the Baltics, 1600-2000 VOR German to Central Europe, 2000-2200 VOR Russian to the Baltics, 2200-2400 RMR to the Baltics. Hope this clarifies the situation a bit (Mauno Ritola via IRCA via DXLD)

November came in like a lion but seems to be going out as a scrawny house cat from the standpoint of propagation. There were some really outstanding DX logs reported, especially by European listeners (see the "Logs" section below for details). However, as this is written late on the 26th, we seem to be back in the doldrums again. However, this should only be a temporary setback as the "season" is still young!

Beacon News Catching up on NDB updates from various quarters: Michael Oexner of Germany reports the following new beacons or those with new IDs in Europe and Africa: MIQ 426.0 Ingolstadt, Germany (effective 27 Sep 2007; ex 426.5 kHz); SP 321.0 Vojens/Skrydstrup, Denmark N55:13:29 E009:16:24 (active again); M 565.0 Ganja, Azerbaijan N40:43:30 E046:20:36; W 565.0 Ganja, Azerbaijan N40:45:13 E046:17:44; BRG 400.0 Bahregan, Iran N29:50:38 E050:16:02; KSR 407.0 Kayseri/Erkilet, Turkey N38:46:32 E035:31:18; BCR 407.0 Bechar, Algeria N31:40:00 W002:14:30. The following European and African NDBs have been officially deleted: BAG 319.0 Bagur, Spain; CO 426.0 Compiègne/Margny, France; OR 440.0 Rzeszów/Jasionka, Poland; VB 425.0 Vryburg, South Africa. Here are new beacons or updates on others active in the Americas: PJ 329.0 Whitehorse YT, Canada (still on; had been reported off); LYQ 529.0 Morrison/Roseanne TN, USA N35:37:00 W086:00:01; CPN 515.0 Campinas/Viracopos, Brazil S23:03:36 W047:03:39. And here are those reported to be decommissioned: M4 296.0 Gimli Indus Park MB, Canada; ZMC 201.0 Fort McMurray AB, Canada; BCZ 228.0 Butler AL, USA; BFE 311.0 Brownfield TX, USA; BTN 386.0 Britton SD, USA; EGY 374.0 English Bay AK, USA; LXT 263.0 Lee's Summit MO, USA; OQW 386.0 Maquoketa IA, USA; PUU 379.0 Flagstaff/Pulliam AZ, USA; VLX 348.0 Mountain View AR, USA; CAT 235.0 Catamarca, Argentina; CBA 350.0 Cordoba, Argentina; TAR 210.0 Tartagal, Argentina; KP 395.0 Grama/Campinas, Brazil; R 295.0 Calama, Chile; BES 290.0 Tumbes, Peru; HIC 320.0 Chiclayo, Peru; URA 345.0 Piura, Peru; CAR 380.0 Carrasco/Montevideo, Uruguay. And from Michael an update on NDB changes in Asia and the Pacific: A 511.0 Dajiaochang, China N31:59:00 E118:47:36 (new); BU 300.0 Bulgan, Mongolia (deleted); PU 360.0 Phuket, Thailand (deleted); GLA 236.0 Gladstone, Australia (deleted). In addition to the above, two new USA beacons in the state of Louisiana are being widely heard in North America: GAO 199.0 Galliano N29:21:19 W090:15:16; and BNZ 230.0 Abbeville N29:58:32.7 W092:05:03. And thanks to e-mail legwork by Frank Thijs in the Netherlands, the previously unidentified beacon IAP 338.0 is no longer in that category. The UK Aviation Information Service report that this NDB is aboard the Inde 23A oil platform in the North Sea at position N53:19:24 E002:34:28. One bit of bad news for those of us hoping to log our first Antarctic NDB: Bob Warren VK7KRW in Tasmania reports, "I have just received information from the Antarctic Division in Hobart confirming (that) the NDBs at Davis Station, Mawson Base and Casey Base were switched off

Equipment news/reviews We earlier reported on a new piece of software called NAVTEXview. MWC member Alan Gale G4TMV has an update: "Tobias has been hard at work on the NAVTEXview helper program and has produced a new version with many new features added. This will now allow the user to choose and filter a single channel, or any combination of several of them, and it can also be set to show the stations which will come up in the next ten minute block. This has developed into a really nice piece of software/freeware now, and Tobias has been very receptive to all the suggestions for improvements to the original beta version. You can download this from http://www.beaconworld.org.uk/navtex.htm. "One word of warning, though: If you plan to edit the text file which accompanies it, do be sure that your text editor program isn't set to convert tabs to spaces. I spent ages trying to work out why my copy stopped displaying any text after I'd made changes and eventually realised that it was my 'Textpad' text editor that was the culprit. Setting the program to show 'invisible' characters soon revealed what was going on, thankfully." (Via NDB List)

Logs DX was hot and heavy in late October and late November. Hottest of all was Vincent Lecler's reception in France of IPA 280.0 Easter Island in the South Pacific at a distance of 13,614 km. This was on 26 October at 0551 UTC. In the days following, Vincent also logged quite a number of beacons in South America and the Caribbean, including Brazilians FLZ 260.0 Fortaleza; CZS 260.0 Cruzeiro do Sul; PEL 415.0 Pelada/Manaus; STM 350.0 Santarem; TUI 220.0 Tucurui; and TRS 215.0 Teresina. Vincent is apparently the first in Europe or North America to log TRS. He also reports hearing CBC 415.0 Cayman Brac and ZIY 344.0 Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands. ZIY and TUI also made it to Hartmutt Wolff's listening post in Germany around the first of November, along with BGI 345.0 Bridgetown, Barbados. Not to be outdone, Dominique Kremp in Normandy caught VIR 281.0 Browerville, Alaska, on 11 November at 0210 UTC. He reports the offset of the ident relative to the carrier as -1018 Hz. VIR is a tough catch even for listeners in western North America, let alone Europe. Peter Conway G3UFI in England reports hearing PEL 410.0 (-1026 Hz) and STM 350.0 (-1020 Hz) in Brazil along with ANP 415.0 Anapolis (+1079 Hz). This was also around the first of the month around his local midnight. Peter also logged ARB 355.0 Ardabil in Iran (-1150 Hz) on 31 October at 2315 UTC. STM also appeared for Tjaerand Bauge in Norway. And in the Netherlands, Roelof Bakker PA0RDT heard ARL 293.0 Arlit, Niger, in West Africa on the 10th at 1939 UTC. And John Pumford-Green GM4SLV in the Shetland Islands went looking for OZN 372.0 in Greenland but found YCO Kuglugtuk/Coppermine NU in far northern Canada instead. Both of these beacons have nominal offsets of 400 Hz. North American listeners were not idle over the last month. Particularly noteworthy was the first known reception in North America of a NDB in Timor. Steve Ratzlaff AA7U in Oregon heard KO 391.0 Dili (+1021 Hz) on 25 October at 1402 UTC at a distance of 12,733 km. (I’m not counting an earlier reception of KO by Martin Francis in Ontario; he used a remote Web-controlled receiver in Western Australia.) In Minnesota, Paul LaFreniere was very fortunate to catch one of the few NDBs left on oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. On 10 November he heard PM2 350.0 aboard the Abaktum 5 platform, running 200 watts. The platform’s position is listed as N19:16:24 W092:09:18. Operation of this beacon is unlikely to be continuous. Paul reports the offset as -1060 Hz. Most platforms in Medium Wave News 53/07

the Gulf have apparently abandoned NDBs in favour of GPS navigation for the helicopters that serve them. A number of North American listeners, including Dick Palmer W7KAM in Arizona, are hearing BZE 392.0 Belize City, Belize, on the odd offset of -1255 Hz. Don Ward in North Carolina caught his first trans-Atlantic beacon on 24 October at 0215 UTC in the form of POR 327.0 Porto, Portugal. The offset was +1030- Hz. And Vernon Matheson VE1VDM in Nova Scotia found MAN 340.0 Manaus, Brazil, on 27 October at 0145 UTC with an offset of +1022 Hz. There was quite a bit of good Navtex DX for a couple of nights in mid November as well. BengtInge “Bengan” Bengtsson in Sweden found the U.S. Coast Guard’s Navtex transmitter near Miami, Florida, on 518 kHz on 16th at 0407 UTC. Steve Ratzlaff in Oregon heard Naha, Okinawa, the next day on the same frequency at 1302 UTC. Dick Palmer in Arizona logged Otaru, Japan, on the 16th at 1336 UTC. And on the 16th and 17th, Chris Black N1CP on Cape Cod in Massachusetts snagged a number of trans-Atlantic Navtex stations, including Hamburg, Germany, and Valentia, Ireland, as well as NMO in Hawaii, also on 518 kHz! (Via NDB List)

Amateur Beacons, etc. There has been quite a bit on interest on both sides of the Atlantic in the new 600-meter amateur band. A number of beacons are operating in Europe and the UK as well as some with experimental licenses in the USA. And some operators have succeeded in bridging the “Pond” with two-way communication. Finbar O’Connor EI0CF in County Donegal, Ireland, reports on his recent crossband 600-to-80 meter QSO: “Worked VE1ZZ this evening at 2025 UTC. He mentioned that he could hear my signal from 2015 UTC and that his local sunset was at 2048 UTC. So our QSO took place, at his end, in daylight. I asked him whether my signal was suffering from QSB and he told me (it wasn’t). We worked three times over the evening/early morning but on the last contact my signal was now suffering from both QSB and static crashes. “VE1ZZ, Jack, was transmitting on 3533 kHz. He told me he could hear a strong station on 505.3 kHz. Tuning up around this frequency and the general USA MF band I heard WE2XGR/6 on 507 kHz. I tried several calls to him on 501.316 kHz but no contact. In fact I could hear him work another station with (I think) a /3 end to the callsign. I am not sure if these stations are aware that they are being heard (well, at least one of them) in normal CW mode without the use of computer programmes to resolve them. “I think we could have had a two-way MF contact across the Atlantic, had he known where I was and his local noise was reasonable. “Conditions are excellent at present across the Atlantic. This could turn out to be an interesting winter season.” (Via NDB List) I should note that Finbar operates the GI4DPE beacon on 501.3 kHz. Be sure to listen for it and let him know if you hear it. This beacon has been heard as far away as southern Ontario in Canada! That’s it for the December Utility column. I’d like to wish everyone the very best for the Holidays and I hope the New Year is filled with DX for all. 73, Andy

Ofcom News Radio report hit by delays 30 October, 2007 Radio bosses will have to wait longer than expected for Ofcom's keenly anticipated vision for the future of the industry after it was hit by delays that will take it beyond this month. The results of Ofcom's Future of Radio consultation were due to be published by the end of October. However, the volume of feedback has meant the publication has been delayed until the "back end" of 2007. The regulator said it had received more than 140 responses to its consultation document, which was published in April this year. The proposals will play a key role in the future regulation of the industry, including ownership rules, the provision of locally produced programming, and the possible switch-off of the analogue radio signal. Ofcom has opened the door to further deregulation, but commercial radio bosses have said the proposals do not go far enough. (www.mediaguardian.co.uk) Radio chiefs tell ministers to set time for digital switch 30 October, 2007 Radio chiefs have given warning that the Government’s failure to decide when to switch off analogue radio is “crippling the industry”. They claim that carmakers will not take digital radio seriously and that investment in digital by radio groups will come to a halt unless a clear plan is drawn up. Andrew Harrison, chief executive of the RadioCentre, the commercial radio body, said that he had been lobbying the Government about the switch and was angered by the time taken to reach a decision. Mr Harrison said that carmakers, retailers and digital radio set producers needed “regulatory certainty and clarity” if they were to take digital radio seriously. Mr Harrison has asked that a working party representing the Department for Culture Media and Sport, Ofcom, the BBC and commercial radio groups be set up by mid 2008 to discuss the issue. He is waiting for a response. (www.thetimes.co.uk)

BBC News BBC Five Live's big loss 26 October, 2007 BBC national speech station Five Live has suffered a loss in audience, making it the worst RAJAR listing in some years. Year on year the BBC news and sport station has suffered losses with their audience down to 5.49 million from 5.75 million this time last year. The corporation is reporting big gains in digital listening with gains for BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio Five Live Sport Extra. Jenny Abramsky, Director BBC Audio & Music, said: "The continued growth of digital radio is once again the highlight of the quarter. It is pleasing to see digital listening – from DAB to podcasting – ensuring radio remains as popular and relevant as ever."(www.radiotoday.co.uk) Five Live transfer at BBC radio news 1 November, 2007 Around a quarter of the BBC's radio news journalists are to move to Radio Five Live in a reorganisation of the way bulletins are provided for the live news and sport network. The BBC radio newsroom, which supplies all the corporation's national stations except Radio 1, will lose 25 posts that are being transferred to Five Live next year in advance of the station's move to Salford, due to take place in 2011. Another 12 posts are expected to be axed from the newsroom over the next five years as part of corporation-wide cutbacks, according to sources.

All Five Live's programmes are expected to move to Salford, with insiders ruling out the possibility that some flagship programmes, such as breakfast or drive, could remain in the capital. Some of BBC Radio's most familiar voices, including Radio 4 newsreaders Charlotte Green and Peter Donaldson, signed an open letter to the BBC Trust in support of the newsroom, which is based in TV Centre in west London, earlier this month. Staff feared the radio newsroom could be cut in half because of cutbacks and the plans by Radio Five Live to take its summaries in-house. The newsroom's output provides tailored news summaries and bulletins for all the corporation's national radio networks, except Radio 1, and local radio stations.(www.mediaguardian.co.uk)

Commercial Radio News Cut local shows, say radio giants 26 October, 2007 Smaller commercial radio stations outside London cannot compete with BBC stars such as Chris Moyles and Chris Evans and should be allowed to slash their local content to three hours a day, leaders of the UK's biggest radio groups have said. The GCap chief executive, Ralph Bernard, and the Emap Radio group managing director, Dee Ford, are among a group of radio bosses who have asked Ofcom to consider a radical overhaul of radio regulations. The overhaul would allow stations with a potential audience of fewer than 500,000 listeners to cut local content to as little as three hours a day in favour of networked programmes. "We all agree that localness is important to our listeners. However, it is also clear that quality of output is of greater importance," said a letter to the regulator from the commercial radio representative body, the Radio Centre. "It is against [the BBC] that every local commercial station must compete daily, on terms that are heavily skewed in the BBC's favour." Few local commercial stations have the resources to recruit the kind of talent, or produce the kind of programme, that can compete with the likes of Chris Moyles, Jeremy Vine or Chris Evans. The appeal was sent to Ofcom earlier this month as part of the regulator's Future of Radio consultation about the industry's regulation. Commercial radio bosses want the local programme quota reduced to enable it to broadcast more networked shows across stations. Under Ofcom's proposals, small, medium and large stations would be required to broadcast four, eight and 13 hours respectively of locally produced and presented content each weekday. (www.mediaguardian.co.uk) SMG: 'We still want to sell Virgin Radio' 6 November, 2007 The SMG chief executive, Rob Woodward, today said the firm was still aiming to offload Virgin Radio in the first half of next year after announcing a share issue worth £95m. The Scottish media group had originally planned to float the national radio station this autumn in a bid to ease its debt situation, but the turmoil in the financial markets over the summer saw that timetable slip. "We will keep a careful eye on the market, but we will be targeting the first half of next year," Mr Woodward told MediaGuardian.co.uk. The company said this morning that it would launch a share issue worth £95.1m in a bid to reduce its debt and help offload "non-core assets" such as Virgin Radio. Mr Woodward said the share issue would reduce the firm's debt to £40m by the end of the year and put the firm on the road to stability. (www.radiotoday.co.uk)

Jam 1575. Steve Whitt reports (28 October) “this Hull based student station seems to be dead. I have not heard anything on air since they closed for the summer vacation. During the summer they left a blank carrier on air. Also www.jam1575.com redirects to another non-functioning website, and www.jam1575.co.uk does not work either.” Jam 1575 is now Jam Radio and only streams on the Internet; phone call to station reveals no intent to return to MW. New website appeared in November http://www.hull.ac.uk/jam/ (Steve Whitt) Member Ken Lancaster in Barnsley tells me that he has not heard Radio Nightingale 1350 kHz since early August. He now hears Radio Ram on the frequency. Also Tracey Gardner reports that he visited the Ashby Hospital site to hear Carillon Radio 1431 kHz and found a nice fat carrier but no modulation. (I reported in July - LPAM Listings- that their web site stated they would be on air soon!) Ofcom has awarded a 5 year radio licence to one community group, for a station to serve the Jewish community in Leeds. Radio JCom will broadcast on MW with information and programmes about the various interests of the community and offer radio training for volunteers. Community radio services typically cover a small geographical area and are provided on a not-for-profit basis focusing on the delivery of specific social benefits to enrich a particular geographical community or a community of interest. First, a big thank-you to Mark Hattam for standing in at short notice once again to edit DX Loggings last month. Next, let me say many thanks to everyone who has written with good wishes after my recent triple heart by-pass operation. I’m happy to report that I’m recovering well, and that other than the time spent in hospital there’s not been too much interference with DXing – mah. After something of a break, it’s good to hear from Tim again, who writes: “Thanks to the kindness of Andy Ikin at Wellbrook I’m back in business”. Some of John F’s logs unfortunately missed last deadline, so they’ve been included this time. Jack writes: “So far this season has been more productive for me than the last. I was particularly pleased to get 1630 KRND, which is farther west than I've previously managed to reach into North America, and also 1557 Family Radio, which I've heard before, but not managed to positively ID until now. Apart from propagation being more favourable, it's helped that I've converted what was a rather shapeless Wellbrook ALA100 large-aperture loop into a much neater rotatable three-turn flat loop that now usually gives better results than my AL1530 loop”. Paul C notes: “Generally conditions have been good without being outstanding. Apart from logging KOMO I haven't managed to hear anything beyond the midwest - despite trying! I've now pointed the antenna a little further north (about 315 degrees) so that may help”! Hans comments: “Again a good amount of Asia this month. And also again not much sign of North or South American Stations. Regarding Asia the K9AY is working great, nulling interference etc., Medium Wave News 53/07

without the K9 a lot of signals would not be possible. I just pre-ordered the new Perseus SDR Rx, it will be a revolution for MW DXers. This rig will hopefully with me, when visiting Wilhelm Herbst DX-183 in January for 10 days”. Yes, the Perseus looks like it’s going to make a big difference to MW DXing, and I’m seriously considering purchasing one myself – mah. Christoph sent a message with his logs, asking: “Could you listen to the audio clips below? I think there is KBRW on them. At the same time (ca. 18UTC), Wilhelm Herbst has heard an NPR announcement on 680 on his 345° and 360° beverages. Last week I have monitored 680 every afternoon between 16 and 18 UTC. Only Saturday and Sunday was the signal strong enough to be audible for some short periods in the afternoon. There is a lot of splatter on the audio clips”. Unfortunately, although I didn’t find anything on the clips that would positively identify the station as KBRW, it is highly likely that this is what Christoph heard on 11 and 18 November. How long before KBRW is reported from England? – mah. Max tells us: “After the Annual Meeting of the Benelux DX Club, Guido Schotmans ( Belgium) and I did some listening at my place. These loggings are marked “DXW”. Interesting was the reception of 1540 KXEL, Waterloo, IA, which we both didn’t hear before”. Renato says “I am back into DXing after a long hiatus. The log is brief (I have kept on purpose most common catches off the log) but with a couple of pleasant personal firsts (WBEN and JOIF)”. I received a nice letter from Roger Bunney, who forwarded a log from a TV-DX friend, R Copeman, in Melbourne, Australia. This contained reports of 1580 KBLA Santa Monica CA being heard from 2116 to 2121 on 21Apr07, 1845 to 1930 on 18Aug07, and 1950 to 2050 on 22Aug07. In addition, on 22Aug07 1580 KMIK was heard from Tempe AZ between 1950 and 2050, and 1460 KHRA Honolulu HI between 2057 and 2104. Roger writes “No info on radio, but won’t be an exotic unit. I suspect the aerial is a random wire outside – not being into MW DXing”. Good to hear from you again after a long break, Roger – mah. Thomas tells us about his DX-pedition: “I spent a week from 10-17 Nov 2007 on the Danish North Sea island of Rømø as usual for MW-DXing in a private holiday house approximately 2500 m from the sea. During the DX week I had very satisfying conditions – from 58 heard stations 12 personal first and also 4 new US states (CA, IL, LA, MO). TA DX was possible at my location from 2100 in the evening to mostly 0900 (UTC) in the morning – the latest catch I had was at 1015 with Seattle’s KOMO 1000. For the first time in my life I reached the US west coast! I think the key was the new 330° beverage – KOMO was audible on this but not on the 290° beverage” (paraphrased by mah). Good conditions towards the west coast, plains, prairies and Alaska were experienced in Clashmore during the first half of November, going downhill slightly during the third week. The new Alaskan catches were a struggle, but eventually yielded IDs, and on the occasions that Alaska was very good, Asian stations were also noted at good strength, though an ID from Japan still eludes me. On occasions, reception from the east coast of North America was sufficiently good to bring in some new catches - mah. The deadline for the January DX Loggings is Thursday, 3rd January 2008, and I look forward to receiving your logs by then, preferably via e-mail using the Word pro-forma, which I can supply on request. I will make every effort to include contributions that are not received via e-mail, floppy disc, or CD/DVD, but as these are very time-consuming to incorporate into DX Loggings, time constraints may result in some or all such loggings being omitted. Please also remember that I don't automatically include loggings sent to the MWC e-List, so please copy me separately if you would like them included in DX Loggings. I’d like to request that you provide details of IDs of stations heard (particularly the less common catches) to give confidence that you have actually heard the stations logged. Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year to all our members!
