Inspired by the far east, combine three sets of ANNO panel curtains beautifully to create an oriental feel in the room. Using both paper and fabric, the panels are adjustable so you can screen off as much or as little light as you want.

Black and white

The bold choice of colours in this room focuses your attention on patterns designs on rugs, bed linen, cushions and walls. The designs have to be quite close, so as to be interesting rather than overwhelming.

Uptown sophistication

Look out for novelties in the IKEA textiles range. The ANDREA range of cushions, rugs, curtains and quilt cover sets are great ways to create a new look without spending a fortune. And you can vary the colours and textures according to the seasons, using a dark sofa like this one as a backdrop.

Hurrah for Curtains!

They can help regulate light, stop the neighbours looking in, muffle sound and control the temperature. The fact that curtains – which are one of the most common decorative elements in our homes – are also extremely functional may come as a surprise to some. Whatever you think of them, here you can read and learn about one of the home’s most useful all rounders: Use curtains to create atmosphere Perhaps one of the more obvious benefits. Curtains can change and alter, soften and add colour. Curtains can quickly create the personal atmosphere and comfort that are so important to a home. Use curtains to regulate the light Control the light! If you want to be able to influence the intensity of daylight in a room, curtains are in most cases a must. Different solutions – including blinds – enable you to filter, screen off, or strengthen daylight to suit your needs in every room of your home.

Tips to decorate a plant pot

You can cover almost anything with fabric. And dressing a plant pot is a great idea. It’s simple, low cost, and a fun way of framing your plants. The most economical way of doing this is to use fabric leftovers. You also need a tape measure, scissors, thread and pins. Start by measuring the circumference and height of your pot. Add approximately 3cm to the circumference measurement and double the height. You should make your fabric the width of the circumference measurement. Find a big enough piece of fabric, measure and cut it. Cut off any hems or such like. Fold the fabric lengthwise with the wrong side out and pin. Sew a straight seam, then turn the right way out and fold the “tube” in half. Now make the base. Turn the pot upside down and draw around it with a pen. Then add a further 1.5cm outside the circle. Cut around the outer circle. Place the right side facing in and pin the base to the “tube”. Sew the base with a straight seam. Finish with a zigzag seam around the edge.

Get a taste of Swedish Christmas

tasty traditions The Christmas period in Sweden is often accompanied by sharing Lussekatter (Saffron bun), gingersnaps and some warm drink like coffee or glögg with family and friends. How to bake Lussekatter – Saffron bun

Makes 36-42 buns Oven temperature: 225-250 °C (400-425 °F) for 5-10 minutes 100-150 gm (2-3 tablespoons) butter or margarine 5 dl (2 ¼ cups) milk 50 gm (2 teaspoons) yeast 1 gm saffron 2 ml (½ teaspoon) salt 1-1.5 dl (½ cup) sugar 1-2 eggs 1.5-1.7L (5.5-6 cups) white flour Eggs and raisins for garnishing

Melt the fat. Add milk and warm to lukewarm (37 °C). Mix out yeast in some of the milk. Crush the saffron in a mortar and pestle, or dissolve it in the milk. Mix milk, yeast, saffron, salt, sugar and whisked egg (and raisins used) with most of the flour. Work the dough until it lets go of the bowl, adding more flour if necessary. Spread some flour over the dough and cover it with a clean towel. Let it rise to double its size. Work the dough lightly on a floured surface. It should be a light, pliable and rather loose dough. Form wreaths or buns. Put them in a non-stick oven paper on an oven tray and let rise 30-40 minutes. Brush with whisked egg and garnish with raisins. Bake.

GLÄNSA lighting chain with 10 bulbs

The clove-decorated orange is a Swedish Christmas tradition and can be found in most Swedish doorway and windowsills. To make these festive table decorations you need tealights and oranges decorated with spicy cloves. How to make Orange & Clove Candles Cut 1cm off the bottom of the oranges to make a stable base. Make holes in the orange to your own design before twisting in the cloves. Cut a hole at the top for the tealight and scoop out the contents. Place the tealight inside. Be careful to blow the candles out when you leave the room. God Jul!

In the olden days, Swedes believe that every farm had its own super-strong little “tomte”, who guarded over it and helped out. He always did his work at night, and he looked like the “tomte” on GLÄNSA light chain. There are even people today who say they’ve seen a “tomte”. Have you?

Free your home from clutter with our useful storage

Living Room If there’s any room in your home you probably spend most of your time in, it would have to be the living room. Since the living room acts as a multi-functional area, things are bound to accumulate and create clutter. The best solution to avoid the mess and clutter is to create storage spaces. A tidy and relaxed living room is your personal sanctuary from the day’s stress and hecticness. Consider using a glass-enclosed entertainment unit to keep all your CDs, DVDs and electronic equipment. Everything is kept visible, but yet protected from dust and curious little fingers.

Display your books and favourite objects on wall shelves. It adds a decorative touch to your living room as well as clears up floor space.

Wall space is just as good as floor space. So, consider moving your sofa or couch a few inches away from the wall and fix a shelf behind it. You can then display your various ornaments or souvenirs on the shelf while using the space underneath it to store or hide items not in use.

Choose coffee tables with drawers or shelves to place your remote controls, TV guides, magazines and books. You won’t have to hunt for remote controls under cushions and couches anymore.

There’s more room for storage with wall cabinets. By keeping other items that are not frequently used, they clear up clutter and open up more living space. If you have slim-sized boxes that are perfect for storing magazines and old newspapers, just add castors to them. By sliding them under the entertainment unit, you free up the space in your living room.

Your existing side table can also be turned into a mobile storage piece. Just add castors and wheel it around the house to make room when you have guests over. Use open shelves for easy access, and bookcases with doors to keep items you want out of sight, or to prevent precious collections from collecting dust.

Other Useful Household Tips Use a finished toilet roll to store appliance cords, so they are kept neat. Of course you hide these rolls behind your cabinets. You can even label the roll with the name of the appliance the cord belongs to. Removing old wax from a glass candle holder can be difficult. So, try freezing it in the freezer for a few hours. Then take it out and turn it upside down. The wax should fall right out.

Is there a grafitti of crayon marks on your walls? Dip a damp rag in baking soda and the marks will come right off. To clean artificial flowers, pour some salt into a plastic bag and add the flowers. Shake vigorously as the salt will absorb all the dust and dirt. Now your flowers look like new! To get that perfect shine, use vertical strokes when washing windows from outside, and horizontal from inside. This way, you can tell which side is left with streaks. Use vinegar to rid of streaks from outside windows. Also, avoid washing windows on a sunny day as they will dry too quickly and might leave streaks.

spring cleaning

tips and ideas

Every home needs to do a ’stock-take’ as the festive season approaches. So, let us give you a hand with your spring cleaning duties with tips and ideas on how to spruce up your bathroom and living area. As you refresh your home, you might like to see what to keep and what not to. Since the holidays are always a time when family and friends come calling, creating cozy spaces in your home are important to great entertaining. Get started with our handy tips and make room for a wonderful festive season.

Bathroom The bathroom is where you spend quite a bit of time, especially in the morning and evening. Finding appropriate space here for your storage needs could get tricky. Here are a few tips and ideas on how to tackle this problem. Store all your frequently used personal care items in a bathroom wall cabinet above your washing basin. Convenient and handy, it keeps your items organised, free of dust, and dry. If you have a mirror cabinet, you can clean it as well as other mirrors in your home, with an air-freshener spray for a better shine and scent.

Use small boxes for your loose items and other knick-knacks. To make the boxes more accessible, install a small wall-mounted shelf above your washing basin. The shelf then provides space for cups to hold toothbrushes and toothpastes, contact lens solution, bottles of lotion, and other personal care products. Less frequently used items like toilet rolls and cleaners can be stored in a wall-mounted tall cabinet. It leaves your bathroom clutter-free, and all your toiletries well kept and organised. Very often, a laundry basket is an option. However, having one in your bathroom to keep all your dirty clothes actually serves an important purpose. When it’s time to do the washing, presto, your dirty laundry is all set to go in one pile. What’s more, your bathroom will look neater and dirty clothes would no longer be mistaken for a bathmat!

Go Scandinavian

A leisurely afternoon

Scandinavians are famous for style and simplicity. Keep everything simple with plain colours on natural surfaces. Or be different and make a trendy statement, by serving soup in a square glass bowl. Also add flavour by tying ribbons around the serviettes.

Sit back with an afternoon cup of coffee or tea. Coloured or patterned napkins are great add-ons. Soften the mood by adding a little stuffed toy on the side.

the right table setting

Turn simple meals into great pleasures by setting the table elegantly. Create the perfect dining atmosphere for that special occasion, or match your table setting with a few of your favourite tableware pieces for a personal touch. Here are some ideas of how you can set your table.

A modern twist

And who said you can’t play with food?

Inviting some friends over for dinner or a chat, and thinking of how to make your guests feel important? Try mixing and matching solidcoloured bowls and plates to create a modern setting. Write their names on serviettes using different coloured pens and surprise them by matching each name with a similarly coloured placemat.

Mix food and fun together. Spread a badminton net across the table and pin the kids’ names on the net. Also try painting white stripes on a black PANNÅ placemat to resemble a racing track. After a few bites, each kid can steer a toy car around the track. This setting will also set a car lover’s pulse racing.
