President’s Perspective … Hello all from your new president! Wow, that’s a big change for our chapter after 15 years of leadership, devotion, and tireless effort contributed by our former president, Steve Magdic. I don’t think anyone would debate the tremendous value he has provided this chapter over the years, keeping the flame alive for ultralight aviation as our chapter went from a vibrant and thriving community at AeroPark to our scattered band of friends and fellow aviators who have cheerfully kept the spirit of the Microlite Flyers alive and well. Thank you Steve for everything you’ve done for the chapter these many years, and we definitely look forward to having you around and actively engaged in the coming years! I look forward to fostering some new ideas and new direction for the chapter that Steve and I, along with our board of directors, put into action over the past year. Our chapter holds a unique position within the EAA ultralight community as the first ultralight chapter (the first of our kind), and taking advantage of that position to revitalize the sport across Southeastern Wisconsin is an exciting opportunity for all of us. My wish is to see our chapter grow and prosper with new members, new activities, and new ways to engage both our fellow aviators and the communities we live in. With that in mind I held our first board meeting in November and started planning for 2017 with the thought of putting some interesting themes and activities on the calendar to get us going. We came up with a theme for each month to guide our event planning, locked in the scheduled dates for regularly occurring chapter events and board meetings, and focused ourselves around helping all our members get the most from being involved in our chapter. Also coming in 2017 is a change to our chapter organization that will allow us to find ourselves a permanent home and take advantage of new growth opportunities. One thing we learned from the EAA staff is that every chapter needs a home base as an anchor and haven for members to gather and participate in events and activities. A home base also makes it easier for prospective members to find us and get involved. We’ve been a nomadic chapter for several years and I really believe that has limited Page 2

our opportunities to attract new members and develop interesting content for our members to take advantage of. We are looking at a couple airfields in our area to learn about what they can offer us in terms of opportunities to help our chapter, obtain affordable hangar space, ways to get attention for our chapter, and future growth plans for the airfield. We’ve narrowed it down to a couple choices for now but the review and selection process is just beginning. Stay tuned! At the same time we have started investigating a change to our charter and becoming an official 501c3 charitable organization, which would give us the opportunity to accept donations and make the process of raising funds easier. We’re able to tap into the EAA staff for their guidance and assistance which will definitely make it easier for us, and we will be keeping all of our members involved in the progress and decision making to ensure this is a well understood and inclusive process. Stay tuned for more on this as we get started because I will be asking for all our members to give their input and make their voices heard; this will set the tone for the next exciting phase of our chapter! I definitely look forward to 2017 and beyond as a new and exhilarating year for EAA UL1, a year where we see growth, engagement, and participation increase over the great year we’ve already had in 2016 – and I hope you look forward to it too. I hope to see you at most if not all of our upcoming events, I want to see more of your flying adventures and exploits in photos and videos, and I definitely look forward to doing all of the above with you for many years to come. Keep the dream alive with your building, flying, sharing, and positive energy as we celebrate the season and huddle down for yet another Wisconsin winter; be sure to enjoy your time with friends and family, and above all be safe. I wish you all the very best of the holiday season and I look forward to a very flight worthy new year for us all. Jim (Scoundrel) Pfarr EAA UL1 Chapter President (and Chief Trouble Maker)

Featured Flyer—The DAR Solo By Jim Pfarr

This interesting and innovative design comes to us from Airplanes DAR, a small company with a long history that started in the previous century on June 24, 1917. DAR is proud to say that they are older than Boeing having been created by Bulgarian king Ferdinand as a workshop for the national air force and later becoming a manufacturing company with offices in Bulgaria. I found out about them as I was reading in the Ultralight Aircraft Pilots forum on Facebook where they posted a series of pictures showing the DAR Solo and their first flights. I have to admit I was intrigued and impressed by the design and construction materials they used to modernize what appears to be an proven design. As you can see the DAR Solo is a single seat, single engine ultra light based on mixed construction: aluminum wings and composite airframe. The result is a remarkable aircraft with low weight and good flight performance. Airplans DAR used CAD production software to manufacture aluminum sheet parts, and they’ve made use of composite parts vacuum molded from carbon, aramid and fiber glass in molds. The composite technology allows integrating the different parts in one structure, and due to this the central beam and vertical stabilizer has been combined in one structural element. Even the landing gear is made from fiber glass using a new 2-stage vacuum molding process. The DAR Solo is sold as a quick build kit, and thanks to their design efforts assembling the major components, like wings and tail surfaces, is easy! The DAR Solo has two main versions – UL and 120. DAR Solo UL is a typical European ultralight airplane with MTOW 260 kg (572 lbs) and powered by Polini THOR 250 DS (36.5hp) running a two blade wooden prop and featuring a GRS 260 emergency parachute. The DAR Solo 120 is lighter version which meet German 120 kg rules (264 lbs), as well as Russian 115, Korean, Brazilian and FAA Part 103. The DAR Solo 120 is powered by Polini THOR 200 EVO (28HP) with a two blade wooden prop and GRS 240 rescue system. You can find out more on Facebook or at their website: http://aeroplanesdar.com/products/ dar-solo/

ATTENTION ALL MICROLITERS! Your EAA Ultralight Chapter Board and some select members are on the hunt for a few “projects” that we can help our membership out with. Anyone building or restoring a bird can contact us and we’ll help you find volunteers with time and talent to get your project flying safely and looking good.

Chilly Chili Fly-In Oct 29, 2016

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the annual Chilly Chili fly in at Blackhawk Airfield on Oct 29th. A big thank-you goes out to Brian Terry for hosting the event and helping to advertise with Chapter 93. This year we had a truly amazing turnout from members of our chapter and guests from the Madison area, and I think the final count was 18 airplanes parked on the ramp and grass! We had a ton of extremely delicious and varied chili to sample, with honors for best chili (and holder of the travelling plaque) going to Steve Magdic for his lip smacking recipe. It was such a good event that we even earned a special article in the November EAA newsletter.

Monthly Tech Tip

By Steve Magdic

Greetings and HAPPY HOLIDAYS from me to you! Here's my first newsletter submission as UL1 VP. I hope to contribute a monthly tech tip that'll be relevant to our sport and your participation in it. Hope you can learn and share! Thanks, Steve Magdic Proper Propeller Application - Which Direction? Direction of rotation is always noted from the rear of the vehicle. If you are standing behind the airplane and getting blown by the prop wash, which direction is it turning? Counter-clockwise is left and clockwise is right. The following is a fail safe list to follow for rotation direction: For all TWO-STROKE engines normally used with ultralights:  Pushers with gearboxes run a right turning prop.  Pushers with belt drives run a left turning prop.  Tractors with gearboxes run a left turning prop.  Tractors with belt drives run a right turning prop. The Rotax 912, 912S, and 914 turn opposite the two-stokes and only have gear boxes available to them:  Pushers run a left turning prop.  Tractors run a right turning prop. Page 6
