WHY BURLINGTON In the city of Burlington, Vermont's best features combine in one picture-perfect region and bustling center of economic activity. The greater Burlington area is also home to more than a quarter of Vermont's population, as well as several of the state's largest employers. The region is easily accessible via rail, car, and ferry. Several colleges and universities provide big-city sophistication and atmosphere without urban hassles. With a multitude of festivals, events, attractions and peerless quality of life, Burlington and the Lake Champlain Region are repeatedly recognized as one of the country's best for living, working and visiting. It is not surprising that Burlington scored top honor in one of Outside Magazine's "Dream Towns” selections.

Burlington is Vermont's largest city, with about 40,000 year-round residents. There are excellent dining, diverse cultural events, and bountiful shopping, in addition to plentiful outdoor adventure and recreational activities. Lake Champlain, often referred to as the sixth Great Lake, stretches for more than 120 miles between Vermont, New York, and Quebec. The lake, in concert with the rugged Adirondack Mountains and beautiful Green Mountains that surround it, sets the stage for outdoor festivals, historic exploration, and everything from swimming, sailing and fishing, to hiking, mountain biking and skiing. Its mountain backdrop is one of the reasons author and world-traveler Rudyard Kipling said Lake Champlain was one of the most spectacular places in the world to view a sunset. WWW.VERMONT.ORG | 9

LAKE CHAMPLAIN COMMUNITY SAILING CENTER

LAKE CHAMPLAIN

By Ryan Robinson/ Sarah Smith :: Community Sailing Center The wind pierces my exposed skin while the sun reflects a reddish glow on my face. Fresh air fills my lungs. On the lake. In the mountains. On the ski lift. At the helm. On the trail. There’s something special about these hills. I can’t quite pin point the exact reason why being outside is so wonderful. For me, it’s like an instinct that continually urges me to go outside. The more time I spend outside the happier I am. Whether I’m on a bike, a snowboard, a sailboat, or taking the dog for a walk- I’m happier. Living in Burlington and working on the waterfront of Lake Champlain makes it easy for me to satisfy those deep ancestral urges. The natural world’s beauty and awe is inescapable in Burlington. There’s a sense of freedom that forms when riding a bike through Waterfront Park. The same can be said for someone who watches the sunset from the pinnacle in Ethan Allen Park. Burlington’s natural world has no limitations. No matter the age, ability, or intereststhere’s something to enjoy here for everyone. Walk on 10 | WWW.VERMONT.ORG

the Burlington bike path or take a hike in Red Rocks park, enjoy a picnic on the University of Vermont's campus green- it's easy to enjoy time outside and slowing down to enjoy the surroundings makes the most of your time in Burlington. It’s impossible to visit Burlington without appreciating Lake Champlain and the mountains that cradle it. Better yet, locals, shopkeepers and hospitality staff will be happy to share their favorite spot with you, you just need to ask. A visit to Burlington isn't complete without getting outside. Go for a bike ride, a sail, a run, or lay it out on North Beach. Whatever suits you- get outside, you’ll be happier.

VERMONT COUNCIL ON WORLD AFFAIRS

WELCOME | BIENVENUE.

CITY CULTURE

By Ashley Sandy :: Vermont Council on World Affairs Most would assume a short visit to Burlington to mean time by the lake, a stroll down Church Street, and a delicious farm-to-table meal paired with a local microbrew. As fortunate as we are that spending a wonderful day can be so effortless, what visitors near and far often forget is that our city is so much more than your quintessential New England downtown- it has a wealth of diverse culture just itching to be explored. The descendants of Irish, Italian and Quebecois immigrants share the city with new Vermonters from around the world to provide a look into a different kind of cultural microcosm rich with ethnic, historical and religious diversity of “Burlingtonians” old and new. A trip to the Farmers’ Market is no longer to shop for just fresh produce and local meats and cheeses, but to bring home samplings of kimchi, samosas, Jamaican jerk chicken and mantu for the dinner table.

BURLINGTON CITY ARTS

The Vermont Council on World Affairs, which brings programs on topics of global importance and international visitors to the state of Vermont, partners with the North End Studios to help facilitate cross-cultural understanding through their monthly Global Burlington International Dinner Series. Each day Burlington becomes more reflective of a global citizenry, so what better way to discover such cooperation than through food, music, sports and culture? Global citizenry is being embraced and it’s no wonder when dozens of different languages are spoken in our elementary schools. Creating conceptual and practical connections are becoming inherent and the bridges between the work of internationalization and multicultural education are starting to be more apparent in our community. There are many types of communities from local to global, religious to political groups and our global citizens are taking advantage of all our vibrant little city has to offer. WWW.VERMONT.ORG | 11

Get outdoors through the seasons Vermont doesn’t quit. If you crave being active, Vermont is your best running partner, ever-ready ski buddy, and lead dog motivating you to get out there in the fresh air. Our state continues to be heralded for being active and healthy. We’ve received top ranking many years in a row for being the healthiest state by the United Health Foundation. Burlington has even been ranked by Outside Magazine in the top ten cities for outdoor recreation (and the #1 place for men by Men’s Health.). Whether the snow has just started to fall or there’s a spring thaw – you’ll find enthusiasts smiling ear-to-ear, taking in the Vermont mountain experience. Play in the mountains or in the woods, pick your fancy: nature photography, ice fishing, snow-shoeing, ice-skating,

hockey, cross-country skiing, ice-climbing, sledding, snow-mobiling, dog sledding. While we often are sad to say goodbye to a season, we find solace in the new crop of adventures — mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, road biking, fishing, swimming, bird watching, leaf-peeping (fall), stand-up paddleboard, sailing, boating, waterskiing, scuba diving, kayaking, berry-picking …. What’s the last ingredient to complete your day out in the Vermont fresh air no matter the season? WATER! Hot tub, a refreshing dip in Lake Champlain (temperature permitting), or simply taking in the view over the Lake…. Relax and reminisce about the day. You’re in Vermont. Breathe it all in. BIKING

By Thomas Cohen/ Brian Costello :: Local Motion Have you ever biked on water? We bet you didn't know that you can in Vermont! The Island Line rail trail connects the greater Burlington region with the Champlain Islands in grand style. It follows the shoreline of Lake Champlain for miles through downtown Burlington, crosses over the mouth of the Winooski River into Colchester, and then strikes out for over three miles on a marble causeway 20 | WWW.VERMONT.ORG

It doesn’t stop there! A ferry for bicyclists takes the place of the drawbridge that once carried steam trains across this causeway to the Champlain Islands. The establishment of the Island Line Bike Ferry is the latest chapter in the rich history of the Island Line; as did the trains from 1899 through the 1950s, it reconnects the vibrant City of Burlington, and Colchester’s Mallett’s Bay, with the family farms, wineries, orchards, and quiet roads of the unique Champlain Islands. Forgot your bicycles? There are plenty of places to rent bicycles and the provisions for a great picnic are easily accessible so what's stopping you? Take a ride on the Island Line - when you get home you can tell all your friends that in Vermont they bike on water.

LOCAL FOOd

By Joyce Cellars :: The Intervale One reason that Vermont is such a beautiful place to live, work, and play is its thriving agricultural economy. We love our pastures dotted with grazing cows, our blueberry bushes dripping with ripe berries, and our farm-to-table meals. And in many ways, we’re setting an example for the nation, like our state’s pioneering plan to connect our local farmers to our dinner plates. The number of farmers in Vermont is growing and the number of small farms is on the rise too. Furthermore, Vermont’s farmers are a diverse bunch, with an increased number of female farmers, minority farmers, and young farmers (a 22% increase in the past five years). Want to get involved in Vermont's food community, but are wondering where to start? It’s simpler than you think! LEARN:: Read about local food issues in the food sections of local papers and online. Check the websites of your local agricultural nonprofits like the Intervale Center, NOFA Vermont, Rural Vermont, and Shelburne Farms for seminars, workshops, and discussions. Get to know your farmer!

TAKE A COOKING:: class from one of the area’s renowned teaching kitchens, like those at City Market, Healthy Living, and or a private class from a local chef. Shop at your farmers’ market. Burlington hosts a yearround farmers’ market, and many neighboring towns offer a variety of summer options. Check out: Vermont.org/ visit-vt for more information! PICK YOUR OWN:: Nothing beats heading out directly to the farm on a warm summer day! Places like Hackett’s Orchard, Allenholm Farm, and Adam’s Apples, just to name a few. For more information and directions, visit a site like http://www.pickyourown.org/VT.htm. CELEBRATE:: Many farms and nonprofits like the Intervale Center and Shelburne Farms offer familyfriendly summer events where you can listen to live music, eat great food, and enjoy quality time with the kids. SHARE A MEAL:: Buy fresh, delicious food from a farmers’ market, produce stand or dine at one of the many restaurants that buy directly from Vermont farmers. Come to the table with friends and family, and celebrate Vermont's bounty! WWW.VERMONT.ORG | 29

BACK STORY

BACK STORY

By Rick Sharp :: Burlington Segway Tours Nestled beside a beguiling blue lake named after explorer Samuel De Champlain, the Queen City of Burlington enjoys the distinction of being one of America’s most livable communities. Chock-full of opportunities to sample delicious fare, local bands, (Phish was once a B-Town favorite!) art and outdoor adventures, Burlington offers plenty to like, including a marvelous history. Beginning with the University of Vermont campus on the hill, you’ll find the grave of educator and philosopher John Dewey, breathtaking stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany, and the mysterious looking Converse Hall dormitory, designed by famed Victorian era architects, the Wilson Brothers of Philadelphia, P.A. Downtown, the hip, homey, atmosphere of the Church Street Marketplace holds more gems of yesteryear. Start at the two centuries old Unitarian Universalist edifice at the top of the first block and meander south toward several noteworthy buildings dating from the 1800‘s: The 32 | WWW.VERMONT.ORG

castle-like Richardson Place, gabled Masonic Temple, once luxurious Howard Opera House and Burlington City Arts, site of the old Ethan Allen Engine Company. Travel west to Burlington’s shoreline, where authors Nathaniel Hawthorne and Rudyard Kipling once strolled Burlington’s first commercial district, (Kipling declared Burlington’s sunset one of the world’s most beautiful). That’s where ship builder John Winans constructed Lake Champlain’s first steamboat, and Timothy Follett, (whose pillared Greek Revival mansion still stands on the corner of College and South Champlain streets) introduced the local railroad. SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

LAKE CHAMPLAIN SAILING CENTER

fun for everyone FAMILY :: School’s out for summer – or maybe you’ve

decided to head to Vermont for a long weekend to leave work and studies behind for two days of fun and relaxation. You’ve come to the right place to keep the kids occupied and entertained – and you’ll find yourself hooked on Burlington’s myriad family activities as well!

AMBIENT PHOTOGRAPHY

There’s something in the air here, and you’ll catch a dose from the minute you breathe in our crisp, fresh Vermont air. Outdoor fun and staying active is a way of life for kids and parents alike here, and we know you’ll want to live like a local along with the rest of us. Our trail-packed woodlands, crystal-clear expanse of Lake Champlain, inviting open spaces and public parks, fishing trips in a tucked-away pond, or even rock climbing are just a few of the wear-'em-out outdoor family fun adventures you’ll find in the greater Burlington area.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Inclement weather, or just feeling like an indoor excursion is on the menu for the day? Interactive museums, aquariums, indoor water parks (yes, really!), plays and theatre productions, and family fun centers are plentiful and sure to please the whole family. SPAS :: Fresh air and open spaces; it’s no wonder Vermont

THE INN AT ESSEX

is a destination for rejuvenation. And, an escape to a fullservice Vermont spa is as dependable a retreat as the Green Mountains themselves, though the bonus is you don’t need to pay attention to the weather. An indoor waterfall, a hot mineral bath, a fireside chaise? Yes, please! A traditional deep-tissue massage, a signature body wrap, a prescriptive facial? Thank you! And no need to fret for the end of the day, because stepping out of the spa and into the Vermont landscape means the relaxation is sure to linger.

FISHING :: Vermont celebrates its outdoor lifestyle, and at the

heart of that lifestyle is fishing.

VERMONT CONVENTION BUREAU

Fishing is a fantastic, year-round activity that can bring together family and friends, offer a needed respite from a fast-paced life, and or deliver heart-pounding action. Who doesn’t crave the adrenaline rush of pulling a massive angry pike through the ice. Lake Champlain is host to a wide variety of sport fish. Walleye, lake and brown trout, smalland largemouth bass, pan fish, pike, and salmon are big and abundant. Lesser known species such as sheepshead, bowfin, and gar are not to be missed when thrashing on the end of your line. The lake’s tributaries are teeming with rainbow trout, brook trout, big bass, yellow perch, and most any other piscine your reel could want for. Professional guide services are widely available for all seasons and methods, or, if you prefer to go it alone, the many local tackle shops are always willing to recommend the latest hot lure and point you in the direction of your next catch. PETS :: If dogs are truly man’s best friend, then it should

AMBIENT PHOTOGRAPHY

come as no surprise that pet travel is becoming increasingly common. As families embark (pun intended) on new travel adventures, more and more they look to include the most important, four-legged member of the clan. Luckily, the Burlington region of Vermont roll out the red carpet for pets with a wide variety of pet-friendly accommodations and attractions. Most restaurants welcome animals on their patios and will even bring them a bowl of water after a day in the sun. WWW.VERMONT.ORG | 35

By Abbie Tykocki :: Discover Jazz Festival Despite being the second least populous state in the union, Vermont enjoys a reputation for being rich in arts and culture. One visit to the Queen City and you’ll see why. Running the full spectrum from sophisticated soirees to subversive revolutions to indulging guilty pleasures, all cultural needs can be fulfilled in Burlington. The city’s lynchpin of cultural arts is the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts. Along with presenting a veritable feast of dance, music, and Broadway hits, they partner with countless other organizations to provide a state of the art home to them all. The Vermont Symphony Orchestra can feed your appetite. With over 40 annual performances all over the state, their emphasis on orchestral, choral, and chamber music sets

the bar high. Additionally, the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival blankets the city in jazz music at concert halls, clubs, city parks, and all along Church Street Marketplace for ten incredible days in June. Have a flair for the dramatic? Head to Vermont Stage Company, Burlington’s longest-standing, locally-producing, professional theatre company for the latest in contemporary plays or a Shakespearean classic. The BCA Center has been Vermont’s premiere location for contemporary art. Annual events focus on experimental film, music, performance and exhibiting national-level artists from Vermont and elsewhere. Arts Riot is Burlington’s newest home for the inspired activist in all of us. Their events engage citizens on any and every level including visual, performing and culinary art. WWW.VERMONT.ORG | 45

What better way to see all the beauty of the Green Mountain State than through our parks. We have easy hikes for families like Mount Philo State Park to world class trails like the Long Trail, spanning the length of Vermont from the Canadian border into Massachusetts. Some of Vermont's highest peaks are located in state parks, like Mt. Mansfield and Camel's Hump. Other mountains like Mt. Ascutney, Mt. Olga and Spruce Mountain have fire towers or observation towers that provide exceptional views.

Take it all in We’re convinced that you’ll love your visit to our region. With our endless recreation, nightlife, restaurants, breweries and much more to take in … you’ll be hardpressed to experience all that we have to offer in your stay. Just know that you can always extend your stay, schedule your next visit, or make the move to our region permanent. We know we’re lucky to call Vermont “home” — and Vermont wouldn’t be where it is without our wonderful visitors. Thank you for visiting Burlington and the Lake Champlain Region.
