Thank you, Blooming Minds Montessori Staff

What do you need to know? •

We strive to make your child as safe as possible at all times. For this reason, the only way to enter our school is by ringing the doorbell and a staff member will let you in.

We do not provide lunch at the school. You will need to bring a cold lunch for your child every day. We have a fridge, toaster oven, and microwave available for your child’s lunch. We will provide a morning and afternoon snack (there will also be a snack provided during extended care hours).

When dropping off your child- you are welcome to walk them to their classroom but please do not enter the class. This can be disrupting to other children as they may not know who you are. Your child’s teacher will greet your child when they arrive. Be sure to clock them in!

When picking up your child please wait in the reception area and the teacher will bring your child up front. Be sure to clock them out and check their file for any notes, art work, or reminders.

We will be going on an occasional Nature Walk field trip to learn about local plants and wildlife, and also for exercise and fresh air (weather permitting). We will only be taking the children on walks that are within a one mile radius of Blooming Minds. Teachers keep a phone on them at all times to be quickly reached during an emergency. Student/teacher ratio does not change on walks. Students will typically hold onto a hand rope and walk in a line, designed to keep them safe and together. We minimize the number of roads crossed and put safety first. Walks are typically 2040 minutes long and carefully supervised.

We have monthly fire drills where students are evacuated to the outside play area. We also do disaster drills every other month.

If you need to contact your child’s teacher you may reach them at the following email addresses: •

Montessori in a Nutshell Montessori is a scientific method of education, a philosophy of child development, and an approach to children that helps them maximize their potential. Doctor Maria Montessori, who lived from 1870 to 1952 was a brilliant and original educator. Her most important discovery was that children learn in a fundamentally different way than adults. A child, for example, learns her native tongue by hearing and imitating. Anyone who has learned a second language as an adult can appreciate what an enormously complex task it is. The young child, however, has an innate capacity to "absorb" language as well as other types of knowledge spontaneously. When Montessori studied children's innate capacity to absorb knowledge, she discovered that they learned best when they were free to work and play in a carefully prepared, nurturing environment. In time Montessori went on to create schools where teachers and parents worked together to create prepared environments where children worked with specially designed learning materials that optimized their potential. Today Montessori schools are recognized throughout the world for their superior and innovative approach to education. The Prepared Environment A Montessori classroom is a specially prepared learning environment designed to meet the developmental needs of young children and to appeal to their diverse learning styles. The Montessori environment is also prepared to foster independence, grace and courtesy and a sense of personal responsibility. Each classroom is organized into five curriculum areas: Activities for daily living, sensory education, language skills, math and the cultural subjects, which encompass the arts and sciences. Practical Life and Sensorimotor Skills In the area of daily living children learn to care for themselves and take responsibility for the care of the classroom environment. Activities such as

preparing a snack, learning how to button and tie their shoes, sweeping and cleaning up, foster confidence, independence and responsibility. The Sensorial area features a wealth of materials and sensory experiences to stimulate and develop the sensorimotor skills so important to academic success. Each Sensorial material is designed to focus on a single sensory skill to encourage concentration. The Sensorial materials also incorporate a "control of error" which helps children identify and correct their errors, an invaluable skill for success in school. Math and Language Skills In the Math area, a specially designed set of curriculum materials, the Golden Bead apparatus leads the child into the world of arithmetic through activities with concrete materials. The children explore linear counting, the decimal system and arithmetic. Memorization of the Math tables and basic geometry are introduced in the kindergarten year. The language area provides experiences in oral language, phonics, reading and writing. The three year old who is introduced to the alphabet with sandpaper letters at four years old learns to spell three letter words with a movable alphabet. Many children learn to read and write in their kindergarten year. Advanced students are given the opportunity to go onto discovering grammar and sentence analysis. The Cultural Subjects The cultural subjects area represents the culmination of all the skills the child has developed in the preschool years, the ability to concentrate and to enjoy learning about the greater world outside the classroom. The Cultural Subjects area provides structured activities in the basics of geography, history, botany and scientific method, as well as the arts. The children are encouraged to ask questions about the world and to research and document the answers.

The Montessori Teacher Montessori teachers facilitate a structured learning environment and foster an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect that frees the children to learn and grow to their highest potential. A Montessori teacher teaches children not only to be competent learners, but guides them to take their place one day as a caring, responsible and compassionate members of the community. About our Programs Curriculum Blooming Minds Montessori approaches education from the premise that children thrive when they become the lead participant in their acquisition of knowledge. When children are allowed to explore they become interested, when they are interested they become engaged, and when they are engaged the true learning happens. Fueled by their inner desire to discover, they become active participants in their education and they take themselves further than any teacher could take them alone. Engaged children are self-motivated, happy, joyful, excited, curious, capable, responsible, independent, confident children who learn that learning is fun and develop the skills to become life-long learners. As educators, we are here to provide a rich environment and to guide each child through this environment along his or her unique path of exploration, interest, engagement, discovery and self-development. Goal Blooming Minds’ primary goal is to prepare each child for all walks of life. We provide interactive environments in which hands-on exploration engages the mind; interactive environments where learning becomes a process of selfmotivated curiosity and discovery; interactive environments where children cultivate a lifelong love of learning along with the higher-cognitive brain functions critical for advanced problem solving and lifetime success.

Infant Program Blooming Minds infant program is for children ages 6 weeks-18 months. In our infant class, we strive to foster the development of basic trust. Teachers assist in the natural development of personality, based on unique needs and wants, they respond appropriately to the infant's needs to be loved, respected, and accepted. We believe that nurturing infants through their senses is very important to the infant so we allow them to observe and move freely while still offering them the holding and feeding comfort they need. We have created a special routine that we maintain everyday so that the infant feels secure in their environment yet we stay flexible to an infants’ daily need. We pride ourselves in developing a stronger sense of self, self-confidence and independence in infants to start preparing them for our next program. Toddler Program Blooming Minds toddler program is for children ages 18 months-36 months old. This community is a home-like classroom environment in which children explore their world together. In this carefully prepared environment, the children will engage in purposeful activity and peaceful interactions with others. Children build speech and language skills, practical life skills, and fine and gross motor skills. This classroom also provides children a safe place to develop self-esteem, social skills, and to work on important physical (motor) skills and intellectual processes. Toilet training is also part of the curriculum. At this age, children often feel a need to do things on their own, like an adult. We foster this need by allowing them to do "grown-up" things on their level independently, but with careful guidance. Early Childhood Program Blooming Minds 3 year EC program is for children ages 3-6 years old. Our Early Childhood Community is a place where children can feel “at home” in a beautiful and stimulating environment. The child is at the height of motorsensory exploration at ages 3-5. It is through the senses that the child will come to appreciate the world. The Montessori environment is an ideal settling in which the student's keen awareness and sensitivity can be fully utilized. With the hands-on materials, the student is developing and refining the power to

observe, and then compare and differentiate sensory input. Academic subjects are introduced through concrete, manipulative materials which utilize all 5 senses and lay the ground work for future abstract thinking. They achieve early mastery of concepts and skills in reading, writing and mathematics through their work with the Montessori materials. They also enjoy hands-on practical life activities (such as washing hands, dusting, and preparing snacks) as they develop coordination and functional independence. This program prepares the child for their future first grade program.
