First Sunday of Advent

Dear Cathedral Family, Friends and Welcomed Guests, On this Thanksgiving weekend, I wish God’s blessings on you and your family. May our gracious Lord keep you safe in His loving care.

Advent: A Season of Hope and Anticipation Advent is a time of preparation, reflection, hope and anticipation. All these efforts during the four week Advent Season are meant to help purify our hearts and prepare us for the celebration and great message of Christmas, which is to remind us that Christ came “to live among us”, to be our Lord and Savior. This is the true “Reason for the Season”. 2699 Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305 404-233-2145 www.cathedralofchristtheking.org

The First Sunday of Advent is also known as “Stir up Sunday” because of the prayer used in Church, beginning “Stir up we beseech thee, O Lord”. It asks God to stir up our hearts with love for Him. The First Sunday of Advent also marks the beginning of the Church’s “Liturgical Year”, or the Church’s “New Year's Day”, at which time we change the Cycle of Readings we are using at Mass.

Advent Lessons and Carols The Cathedral Choirs will present the twentieth annual Advent Lessons and Carols, People Look East!, Sunday, December 5 at 4pm. This colorful event will gather together eight of the Cathedral’s musical ensembles. The Cathedral’s Boys and Girls Choirs and Preparatory Choir, as well as several of the Cathedral’s Adult choirs will provide beautiful music to accompany the dramatic readings that “prepare the way of the Lord”. An engaging mix of hymns and songs, some by the great traditional masters such as Georg Friedrich Handel, others by popular contemporary composers and a special arrangement of the spiritual “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burnin” will ring out in the gathering dusk. This program shines with the joyous spirit of the holiday season and all members of the parish family are warmly invited to attend. For more information, call the Cathedral Concert line at 404-233-2145 x820.

CKS Supports the Midtown Assistance Center The seventh grade recently organized a food drive as a way to help stock the shelves at the Midtown Assistance Center prior to the holidays. The response from the Christ the King School community was amazing, and the seventh graders were able to deliver more than 460 bags of groceries! After delivering the food, the students stayed to organize their donation, stock shelves and sort cans. To a student, they worked with a wonderful spirit knowing that they were able to help those less fortunate than themselves. Each year since 1989, CKS seventh graders have volunteered at the Midtown Assistance Center, which makes Christ the King School the longest running supporter of that organization. “We have a long and wonderful friendship with Midtown that every seventh grader has etched in their memory,” commented CKS Religion Coordinator Rose Maksimowski.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY Finding Forgiveness

Linda is a woman who had an abortion. She writes, “My breaking point with …[my former] Church was when I was feeling truly guilty because of what I had done. I knew it was wrong, but people were trying to justify it to me. I didn’t need justification, I needed to know how to reconcile an already fragmented relationship with the Lord I desired... but I was too weighed down and no one seemed to see the need of forgiveness and reconciliation, at least until I came into contact with the Catholic Church. The funny thing is, so many people seem to see the Church as uncompassionate and uncaring; it was where I found love, acceptance, and forgiveness...” For more information on the Respect Life Ministry, please contact [email protected].

RCIA Team Members Needed Each year men and women from various faith experiences answer the call to inquire into the Catholic faith. We need individuals for the RCIA Team who love their Catholic faith and will work together to welcome these inquirers and help them come into the Catholic Church. Team members don’t have all the answers but are willing to follow the Lord’s command to “go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” If you would like to find out more about joining the RCIA Team please contact Keri Allen at 404-2672691 or [email protected]. 6

Food Drive to Support Families in Need this Holiday Season They’re Knocking on our Door

For most of us, the Christmas season brings joy and hope for peace on earth, but in households all across Atlanta, many parents don’t have enough food to feed their children, much less gifts to put under the tree. Buckhead Christian Ministry hears those families knocking and sees their hungry faces, and that’s why BCM is reaching out to Christ the King for help during this critical time.

After each Mass on December 4 and 5, bags with food lists will be distributed. Please fill and return your bags to the BCM containers next to the downstairs reception desk. Donation envelopes are also available. Thank you for making Christmas merry for families throughout Atlanta!
