Winter 2013

Dear Camp Laurel Family: W

e hope everyone had a happy and healthy holiday season. Now that 2013 is here, let the countdown to another memory-filled summer begin! We can’t wait to see all of you on the shores of Echo Lake in just a few short months. Let’s start by taking a glimpse at those on tap for Laurel 2013. A rousing “WELCOME BACK!” is in order as Jonny Adornetto returns to his summer home as Boys’ Head Counselor. We’re thrilled Jonny is set to take the reigns of Boys’ side, and we know that Apache, Sequoia and Bago will be as rockin’ as ever! What about veteran administrator and former Boys’ HC Peter Buehner? He’ll be back, too, and will work closely with Jem, Debbie and Keith all around camp and with Jonny, making his transition to Boys’ Head Counselor a seamless one. Great news! Under the guidance of Claire (our illustrious Girls’ Head Counselor and Staffing Director) and Jonny, our Campus Leader team is filled with years and years of Laurel experience and pride. This lineup begins with Joie Picatti at the helm of Apache once again. Welcome to the 7-year club, Joie…make sure to bring the Cap of Chance to Readfield! Oregonian Tim Eldredge reprises his role as Sequoia CL…get ready for another awesome summer, Sequoia guys! And rounding out the triple crown of returning Boys CLs is Jon Miller, who’s psyched for another summer overseeing the gentlemen of Bago. Other returning favorites lined-up for leadership roles include 2012 ACLs Justin Tretten, who graduates Humboldt State this May, and Stefan Borowski, who’s currently teaching at New Caanan Country Day School. Making the leap from Athletics is Travis Mann, who’s primed to join the leadership ranks, as is Apache favorite Kurt Whisler. An impressive group for sure! Girls’ side is equally stacked with enthusiasm and experience…starting with veteran ACL Lauren Keane, who’s psyched to return to Readfield in June. Welcome to the 5-year club, Lauren! Also on tap for a return is Northeastern University senior Ainsley Price, back for year #2 in a leadership role. And Studio Art’s finest Karrie Brawn is psyched for her role in girls’ campus leadership. NEWSFLASH: 2012 Assistant Program Director Melissa “Sarge” Asarch makes her debut as a Campus Leader bringing her abundant Laurel energy. Bravo, Melissa! What a great team! Summer programming is already cranking with Nieman working hard on another amazing and action-packed seven weeks. Fantastic news that Assistant Program Director Tom Berrian is back in the Program Office for a 5th consecutive year – his 9th Laurel summer. Tommy B is joined in the 2013 Program Office by his “better half,” Lotta Lukens – who’ll be immersed in all aspects of Laurel’s exciting program. Sweet news! Lotta won’t be straying too far from her Acadians, as she’ll be very involved in the planning of their Evening Programs and S-Days. And camping’s most distinguished group of Program Area Directors are all back and raring to go – Holly at the Waterfront (35 years), Tom in Athletics (22 years), Gustavo and Adriano at Tennis (22 years combined), Zack in Adventure and InterArts (13 years), and Pam at Equestrian (8 years). We think that’s a pretty impressive crew! And we couldn’t make it all happen without Assistant Director Warren Williams, Operations Manager Kyle Baillargeon and Office Managers Heath Capello and Devon Ducharme…who will all be back in Maine come June. We’ll have so much more to report in the Spring edition of MooseTracks, but until then, stay warm, study hard and get excited…June 22nd will be here in a flash!

Winter Sports In Maine I

t’s easy to think that when you leave Maine at the end of the summer, nothing happens there the rest of the year. But the Pine Tree State is a year-round sports haven. And nothing says “Maine” more than winter sports. So what’s there to do when the snow begins to fall?

GLIDE THE ICE

HIT THE SLOPES There are nearly two dozen ski resorts in the state. Sugarloaf, Sunday River and Saddleback may be the best known, but there’s a mountain for every ability - with your choice of downhill, snowboarding or tubing – throughout Maine. Many high schools sponsor ski teams too, but not just alpine skiing. Cross-country skiing is a staple at many schools, too!

Ice hockey is probably Maine’s most popular sport. The University of Maine men’s team is a national powerhouse. But nearly every town has its own rink, so there are great hockey games everywhere from the coast to the Canadian border. Ice fishing is also big. Cutting a hole in the middle of a lake sounds like an acquired taste. But add a bunch of friends, a heated cabin and competitive “ice fishing derbies,” and the result is a truly enjoyable way to spend a beautiful winter day.

Our own Echo Lake on a beautiful winter day. 4

CRUISE THE TRAILS One of the best ways to enjoy Maine’s stunning winter landscape is to climb aboard a snowmobile and ride the state’s amazing system of more than 14,500 miles of interconnected trails. Every winter more than 100,000 snowmobilers find winter fun cruising through pine forests, along rivers choked with ice, across open fields and over vast expanses of frozen lakes and ponds.

In addition to the fantastic S-Day Trip schedule, Bec & Bago campers travel throughout New England and Canada on exciting Overnight Trips. Jem and Nieman are putting the final touches on what will surely be memorable excursions …highlights include:
