S t e wa rdsh ip ... moving us closer to God If you are fortunate enough to be of retirement age, you may remember Bishop Fulton Sheen. Bishop Sheen (later Archbishop) became known for his preaching, especially his work on television and radio. In the 1950s, and into the 1960s, he was dramatic, humorous and probably the most recognizable Catholic in the United States. If you don't remember him, try a search on YouTube. Bishop Sheen once said, “Show me your hands. Do they have scars from giving? Show me your feet. Are they wounded in service? Show me your heart. Have you left a place for divine love?” In many ways this parallels St. Paul when he writes in our Second Reading from his letter to the Galatians. Last Sunday the second reading was also from Galatians where St. Paul was telling his readers that some missionaries were advocating a combination of the old Jewish Law and the new Christianity. This week's passage is from the last Chapter of that book and seems like a final plea for peace: “From now on, let no one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus on my body.” St. Paul is saying the same thing as Bishop Sheen; “Do our lives reflect the presence of the Lord? Are we living as good stewards, as disciples, such that we too bear the marks of Jesus?” We are not speaking of real scars, but the marks left when we respond to the Lord's call, and He does not call us lightly. Today's Gospel tells us that the Lord is reliant upon each of us, to serve as laborers in His vineyard. There are incredible needs in our world, locally and globally. I'm sure each of us realizes this, but we may be frustrated in viewing ourselves as too small to contribute or help the Lord. Note that today's Gospel tells us that all the 72 returned with joy and a great sense of satisfaction. They learned that when they responded to Jesus' call they could anticipate help from the Holy Spirit and blessings beyond their expectations. When we strive to give, serve, and have faith as Bishop Sheen indicated, then we, too, can rejoice as the Lord says to us, “Your names are written in heaven.” Please contact us, Stewardship@AmericanMar tyrs.org with questions or comments on this article or about Stewardship.

Stephen M inistry

Deacon Dick & Patti Williams, 310-545-8244

"I’ve heard of the Stephen Ministers…what do they do?" Stephen Ministry demonstrates one of the purposes of our parish, to be a compassionate community and a refuge for the hurting. We reach out to those who are struggling with a personal crisis. We see the value in everyone’s life and we recognize the face of Jesus in all whom we meet. Stephen Ministers serve our community by helping carry one another’s burdens. This ministry is a call to action and has accountability to ensure that the care delivered matches the needs of the care receiver; so that by listening and caring for those who are hurting, we can become the vessel that offers compassion and God’s healing love when lives seem at their lowest point. If you are facing a crisis in your life, please call our confidential line, 310-545-8244.

Rockin' Readers SLB joins us to read to the small children present with their parents. Volunteers are welcome to bring/ donate books and also read to the children. To volunteer or to donate items contact: Jim Quilliam at j im q uilliam@ou tlook . com. The Social Justice and Outreach Commission announces: On Sunday, July 17, the Archdiocesan Office of Life, Justice and Peace will hold a Mass honoring all immigrants in the Los Angeles Archdiocese. In the words of Archbishop Gomez: “I hope you will join me again this year to celebrate the rich diversity of peoples from other nations and foreign lands who make up the family of God here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. I am honored to celebrate this Mass again this year and I am inviting each parish and religious community to participate in a procession that will begin the Mass… As we know, our Holy Father Pope Francis came to our country last September and spoke movingly of his own experience as an immigrant’s son and a child of the Americas. He encouraged us to keep working until all our brothers and sisters can one day find what they came here looking for – simply a better life for their children and loved ones” If you are interested in attending this Mass and walking in the procession to represent American Martyrs, contact Tony Fadale at f ad ale anthony@gmail. com | 310-542-9696. The procession will begin at 3:00pm. Mass will start soon after the procession finishes.

L ife & F amily M inistry ( fka R espect L ife ) Happy Independence Day! "The care of human life and happiness, not destruction, is the first and only object of legitimate government." ~ Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States, Principal Author of the Declaration of Independence California Crosses an Unwelcomed Threshold with Legalization of Physician-Assisted Suicide – Part Two The California Catholic Conference of Bishops, comprised of Bishops from the two archdioceses and 10 dioceses of California, issued the following statement on the legalization of physician-assisted suicide on June 9, 2016: “We have spoken – and will continue to speak – vigorously against this misguided law. It does not, for example, require a psychological assessment of people requesting assisted suicide. There are also significant concerns from the disability rights community about the lack of safeguards in the law, an absence of reliable information about its use and the growth of suicide in other states where assisted suicide is legal. Pope Francis has challenged us many times to care for those on the margins. In an address last year to medical professionals he addressed our responsibility to care for people at the end of life: ‘Palliative care is an expression of the truly human attitude of taking care of one another, especially of those who suffer. It is a testimony that the human person is always precious, even if marked by illness and old age. Indeed, the person, under any circumstances, is an asset to him/herself and to others and is loved by God. This is why, when their life becomes very fragile and the end of their earthly existence approaches, we feel the responsibility to assist and accompany them in the best way.’ We echo this commitment of our faith and take to heart the words of St. John Paul II: ‘respect, protect, love and serve life, every human life! Only in this direction will you find justice, development, true freedom, peace and happiness!’ ” Please continue to go to w w w. c a c at ho li c . o rg and click on “Take Action” – Action Alerts to help stop any expansion of the End-of-Life Option legislation enacted in California on June 9, 2016. Please continue to pray for those at the end of life: O God, source of all life and hope, look kindly on our brothers and sisters facing the end of their lives, fill them with the hope of your mercy and give them peace and comfort. We pray for our citizens to choose life and fight against assisted suicide. Lord, move our hearts to work for life and for the protection of the elderly, the sick and the disabled. Renew our commitment to building a community where every human life is welcomed and wanted, valued and defended, from conception to natural death. We ask this through the intercession of St. John Paul II. Amen. Every Tuesday evening, 7:30 - 8:30pm St. Joseph’s Chapel in the Spirituality Center

“Personal prayer substantiates the beauty and value of our communal prayer, and we grow to understand more deeply the ways of God within and beyond our faith community..”

Community and Growth, Jean Vanier The Christian experience is not an isolated one. It is a relationship lived with others before God. In contemplative prayer, we listen with our hearts for the many ways in which God draws each one of us, within and beyond our faith community. Contemplative prayer and centering prayer are practiced in similar ways, in a quiet setting. We keep a very simple structure; prayer instruction is available. What do we do? 7:30 quiet arrival 7:35 brief reading 7:40 silent prayer 8:00 walking meditation (optional) 8:05 silent prayer 8:25 closing prayer: “Our Father” Newcomers are always welcome. Registration Time for SRE As we plan for the 2016-2017 year, we hope your family will be joining us in learning about our faith through our afterschool programs for Grades 1-8. First Communion preparation begins with First Grade, but it is never too late to come closer to Jesus in our SRE classes! Go to our website for the links to online registration. Returning students may be re-enrolled through the parent portal link on the website. Consider being a volunteer catechist in our SRE ministry. Catechists are the flowers of our parish, blooming with love and spreading seeds in the wonderful work they do with our young people. For more information, contact Patti Williams. SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN

Parents should avoid lecturing and start talking Lecturing teenagers may feel like the right path to take, especially if they are starting to develop bad habits or make poor choices, but lecturing is usually the least effective way to get your message across. Children tend to see lectures as condescending and abstract, and this detracts from the wisdom and advice you are trying to provide. Instead of lecturing, try to engage your child in calm, open conversation that addresses the issue while allowing you both to talk about what’s going on. For more tips and a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Communication Tip No. 11: Why Lecturing Doesn’t Work,” email [email protected] or call 213-637-7227. For particular help, call Assistance Ministry at 213-637-7650. Find this bulletin online at AmericanMar t yrs.org

WHERE IS THE PARISH OFFICE? • Our Welcome Center offices and staff and the Scrip Office have relocated to the trailer on 15th Street between the Gym and the Parish House. • Deacon Fred’s office is in the Parish House.

O'DONNELL HALL IS OPEN • However, the entrance is through the south east doors located behind the kitchen.

THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE PARKING LOT • 15th Street is now ENTRY ONLY to the parking lot. • Laurel Avenue stays as entry/exit • You may also use the exit ramp behind O'Donnell We know this construction comes with temporary disruptions and inconveniences; our goal is improving our facilities for the long term. Thank you for your extra patience and understanding.

"To be Catholic and American should mean not having to choose one over the other."

Our First, Most Cherished Liberty The Art

of S piritual D irection Spiritual direction is an ancient ministry, a unique one-toone relationship in which a trained person assists another in the search for an ever closer union of love with God. Directors listen carefully to the unfolding of directees' lives to help them discern the ways in which God is leading them. The practice of spiritual direction consists much more of "holy listening" rather than direction in the sense of offering guidance or direct advice. American Martyrs maintains a list of Certified Spiritual Directors who have received training, formation, and are members of Spiritual Directors International. They are committed to spiritual growth, both personally and with those they accompany on their journey. For more info, contact Jenny Attanasio, 310-545-5651.
