THE

SYNOPSIS

Here is Rydell High's senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding "Burger Palace Boys" and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking "Pink Ladies" in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head "Greaser" Danny Zuko and new “good” girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high school romance of their "Summer Nights" as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as "Greased Lightnin'", "Born to Hand-Jive", "Alone at the Drive-In Movie" recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation. An 8-year run on Broadway, a blockbuster Hollywood movie starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, and three subsequent revivals along with innumerable school and community productions place GREASE among the world's most popular musicals.

GREASE is a musical in two acts. This abridged version of the stage musical is slightly shorter and more suitable in content, but retains the fun-loving spirit and immortal songs that make GREASE a favourite among rock and roll fans of all ages.

There will be one 20 minute intermission. Concession snacks and beverages will be available in the Cafeteria.

All the parents of our cast members for their patience, encouragement, and love and to all our private and corporate sponsors for their generous support!

·The casting of Olivia Newton-John was John Travolta's idea, who said, "there was no star I could think of better than Olivia. She had the perfect quality." ·For the role of Rizzo, Carr originally lobbied Lucie Arnaz, daughter of Hollywood royalty Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Paramount was not impressed with her audition. The part went to the talented Stockard Channing who, coincidentally, had costarred with Lucie Arnaz in the stage play Vanities in 1976. ·While not really a sequel plot-wise, Grease 2, starred Michelle Pfeiffer (marking her debut in a feature film), Lorna Luft, and Maxwell Caulfield. The only original cast members to reprise their roles were Didi Conn (Frenchy), Eddie Deezen (Eugene), Principal McGhee (Eve Arden), Doddy Goodman (Blanche), and Sid Caesar (Coach Calhoun). The film was panned by critics and box office numbers were equally insubstantial. ·Internationally, Grease was known as Brillantina (in Italy), Nos tempos de Brilhantina (in Brazil), Vaselina (in Mexico), and Pomade (in Hungary). It has grossed almost $400 million since its release in 1978. ·A reality competition show entitled Grease: You're The One That I Want was produced in 2007, with winners Max Crumm and Laura Osnes cast as the leads in the Tony-nominated Broadway revival. ·Grease on Ice in 1999 featured Nancy Kerrigan as Sandy, Matt Williams as Danny, and Scott Davis as Kenickie. ·On November 15, 2012, the hit FOX television series Glee paid tribute to Grease with a special musical episode entitled “Glease.” Coincidentally, in 2010, Olivia-Newton John guest starred on Glee as a judge.

Fun Facts ·In the film, Danny Zuko and his gang are known as the T-Birds, but in the stage show they're the Burger Palace Boys. Back then, the police would confiscate and burn a jacket with a gang's name on the back, so it was cheaper for gang members to adopt the name of the place where they hung out. ·The Pink Ladies were named after a real group of girls who wore pink jackets with cocktail glasses on them. They carried the guys' weapons in their purses, because the cops could not frisk girls. They could only pat down guys. So, if you were at a big dance, the girls were the ones with the switchblades and brass knuckles. ·Rydell High is named after 1960's teen idol, singer Bobby Rydell. ·Grease is the first and only Broadway show composed entirely on guitar. ·Creators Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey originally thought a musical with a 50's rock 'n' roll story would never work and the project was abandoned. They reconsidered. ·As a kid, Jacobs took four guitar lessons, then realized he could teach himself the four chords necessary to play any rock 'n' roll song. The four chords (C, A minor, F, and G7) were the inspiration for the song "Those Magic Changes" performed by Doody in the show. ·One of the film's producers, Alan Carr, payed Jacobs and Casey $200,000 for the film rights for Grease. His original choices for the roles of Danny and Sandy were Elvis Presley and Ann-Margret. ·John Travolta's involvement with Grease started when he was cast as Doody, the youngest member of the Burger Palace Boys, in the first national touring company of the stage musical in 1971. ·The casting of Travolta as Danny Zuko in the 1978 feature film was an obvious choice, following his success as Vinnie Barbarino in the sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter (1975-1979) and his starring role in the film Saturday Night Fever a year earlier. But Paramount, the studio making Grease, had another television star in mind - Henry Winkler, who played Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli on the television series Happy Days. ·Entertainer Marie Osmond claimed she was the first choice for the role of Sandy, but turned it down on "moral grounds."

MESSAGE from THE PRODUCER My sister was obsessed with Grease at a very early age. I'm sure it still ranks as one of her Top 5 all-time favourite musicals, along with classics like Annie, Oliver, The Who's Tommy, and Les Misérables. I knew the music, of course, having heard it ad nauseum during her marathon viewings.   I saw the way it moved the kids at a summer drama camp twenty years ago when we performed "We Go Together" as our camp theme song. Admittedly, it is a fun and very campy musical, but one I've resisted doing because I believed it was one of those shows that had been overdone. According to a 2012-2013 Annual Play Survey conducted by the Educational Theatre Association, Grease ranks 7th in the list of the Top 10 most produced musicals in North American high schools, behind such favourites as Beauty and the Beast (#1), Guys and Dolls (#2), and Legally Blonde: The Musical (#4). Did our school need to become another statistic on this theatrical survey? Originally, I had planned for our cast to tackle the 70's Gospelthemed Godspell, but was persuaded to trade parables for poodle skirts. In September, I proudly announced that Grease is the word for Theatre De La Salle’s 2013/2014 season! I have no regrets. In the summer of 1978, Grease was the word. Over 35 years and $394.6 million later, Grease is still the highest grossing Hollywood musical of all time. The original version of the stage musical was produced in 1971 in Chicago. The original Broadway production ran from 1972-1980 with a incredible 3,388 performances. There is no doubt that Grease - it’s sugarysweet songs, immortalized hand jives, high heels and greased wheels - is permanently stitched into our pop culture fabric, having defined an entire era. There are worse things I could do than taking the reigns of a high school musical production. Thankfully, I'm not alone. This year’s production of Grease is a creative collaboration of many talented students, staff, parents, and theatre industry professionals. My deepest gratitude is extended to my colleagues Glenn Cherny and Marc Labriola for their directorial leadership, creative input, and hours of dedicated time and effort to make our cast “go together.” Marlene and Jerry McGroarty - all those magic changes you made through costume design, set construction, and vocal training raised this show to a higher level. Our Stage Managers, Alyssa Arone and Lauren Iafrate - your enthusiasm, energy, and attention to detail have made you stars in your own right. Del graduates and Theatre De La Salle alumni Johnny McGroarty and Tristan Lipton - it’s obvious you are hopelessly devoted to our school and theatre. It was great to have you back! Our choreographer, Melissa Virdo - you ARE the rock & roll party queen and showed us that we were born to hand-jive. Jordann Zaza and your exceptional ensemble of musicians - you got us shakin' at the high school hop. Thank you for your professionalism and patience. To our Technical Directors, Nick and Pat Andison - you are supreme and we all scream for your Grease lighting. To my family and friends, who are often neglected in the final months of rehearsal, thank you for allowing me to dedicate all my free time to this crazy passion of mine. Finally, to the entire cast and crew of students - you make me proud to be a drama teacher. Your charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent are an inspiration to me and your energy and enthusiasm are infectious. It is thanks to your dedication and your parents’ support, that Theatre De La Salle is alive and well. Whether you are still a Del student or have graduated and moved on to greater pursuits, know that you can always call Theatre De La Salle home. We will always be together. Come back and visit us! I hope our talented cast of singers, actors, and dancers demonstrates for you tonight that, over three decades later, Grease continues to be the word, because it's still "got groove, it's got meaning. Grease is the time, it's the place, it's the motion. Grease is the way we are feeling."  We hope you feel it right along with us! Enjoy the show!

I had me a blast!

Dear De La Salle Theatre Patrons:

It is hard to believe that this year's  musical production first appeared on stage in 1971, when I entered high school. It was a smash hit - my first year of secondary school was less so! The film version, which people of my generation remember more, came out in 1978 and with Saturday Night Fever ushered in the disco age. Some may look back with fondness on this time, and others are quite glad that disco is part of the past. In any case, the world was for sure a simpler place and the events of the time seem to remind us that youth is spent in hope and anxiety, but hope prevails.

I am often troubled that our youth today may not always find the joy and hope we experienced. At De La Salle, it is the task of the school to assist the home in creating memories of hope and joy and supporting our young people in times of anxiety. Music makes us feel better and for older generations, musicals transport us to other times to relive what we experienced and sometimes have forgotten.

I am indebted to all those responsible for this year’s show. Countless hours of preparation and rehearsals are just part of a theatre production. In taking on this task, our students have learned a great lesson - that things of quality are seldom attained without the sweat of the brow. I thank Mr. Luchka, his staff, and the entire cast and crew for being up to the challenge.

Principal, De La Salle College “Oaklands”

De La Salle College, over its history, has produced many musicals and plays; and since re-privatization, performances such as Oliver, The Sound of Music, The Importance of Being Earnest, Inherit the Wind, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat have continued the school’s commitment to the Arts, while providing the school community an opportunity to share in such a meaningful undertaking. This year should be no different, as our talented students perform in our theatrical production of Grease. Many volunteers have participated in several aspects of the performance. Whether students are acting, singing, dancing or participating in the management of the backstage, painting sets, or building props, drama productions provide our students another medium that creates a spirit of community and acknowledges their many gifts. We, as a school community, are proud of their efforts and their dedication. I am confident that Grease will be fun to watch. Some of us, without hinting at our age, may even sing along as we recall some of the many songs and memorable lines from the hit movie and musical. After all, who did not want to be like Danny Zuko or a member of the T-Birds? Special recognition and appreciation goes to Mr. Michael Luchka. As artistic director, he has, once again, organized a successful performance. His efforts, commitment, energy, and passion for the College are commendable. Please, come join the fun! Grease is the word!
