STEEPLETALK

DAVIDSON COLLEGE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH • DAVIDSON, N.C.

Charlotte CROP Walk by Shelli Latham The entire DCPC family is invited to participate in the Charlotte CROP Walk this Sunday, October 14. The CROP Walk is a 6K stroll through Charlotte, beginning at Memorial Stadium. Participants from DCPC will join 6,000 other walkers to raise awareness about issues of hunger and poverty and to do something about it. The Charlotte CROP Walk is the nation’s largest and is right at our doorstep. CROP Walk is a national event, which raises funds to support refugee, self-help and hunger projects through Church World Services (visit their website: http:// www.churchworldservice.org/. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised stay within Mecklenburg County and are divided amongst Crisis Assistance Ministries, Loaves and Fishes, and Second Harvest Food Bank. Here’s how you can get involved: Walk. It’s not too late to be a part of this group. You just need a CROP Walk form, which can be found on the Global Missions and Youth Ministry bulletin boards. Please walk, even if you have not raised funds. This is a multi-generational opportunity for education and to walk in solidarity with those who depend upon their feet to carry them to collect water, gather food, escape persecution and famine, and seek medical attention. Give. You may support individual walkers’ efforts or the DCPC team as a whole. Funds will be collected at both worship services on Sunday, October 14. To donate, you may drop money in one of the collection containers following worship. Or, you may make a write a check made out to DCPC, indicating that it is for CROP and place it in the offering plate. DCPC has set a goal of $2000 for this year’s walk. You can help us reach it. If you are walking: • Pick up and fill out a CROP registration packet from the Global Missions or Youth bulletin boards. • Wear your walking duds to 11:00 am worship. If you do not already have a CROP Walk t-shirt, you may pick one up from the front of the Congregation House beginning at 8:45 am. • Bring your lunch and picnic on the lawn. • Depart with your DCPC buddies for the walk at Memorial Stadium.

A Day of Grace Do you know – have you found – your True Name? A wise friend of mine once said “we are all meant to be ‘Mary’ – birthing Christ into the world.” Saul found that his true name was Paul, and Peter too, was given a new name, as he came to understand who he really was. Do you know your full and True Name? The spiritual journey in life is a call to find one’s True Name, whether like Mary or Paul, we are meant to find and live out that True Self – the ‘Imago Dei’ – the image of God within us all. In order for that True Self to come to fullness, we need times to be quiet, to be reflective, to be centered in our deepest places, to allow that “birth” from within to become a life of Love, Compassion, and Justice in the outside world. A Day of Grace is offered as one such time apart from busy lives to reflect, seek, and be centered in whatever deep places call us to that fuller life – one’s True Name. Sr. Macrina Weiderkehr, a Benedictine Sister, author, poet, retreat leader, and spiritual director, will lead this Day, teaching from her own experience and growth toward God. She has many books that speak of her own findings, including A Tree Full of Angels, Seasons of Your Heart, The Song of the Seed, and Behold Your Life. Other parts of the Day will include times for group discussion, individual reflection in silence, music, journaling, or contemplative walking, as you choose. Lunch is included in the registration fee. Main Street Books will provide copies of Macrina’s books for sale and the author’s signing. Registration forms are found in the brochures, located at the information center of DCPC or online at the DCPC website. “Do come apart a little while”, Jesus said to his followers, then and now. We often find fuller Life in such times of Grace. A Day of Grace, Honoring the Soul’s Need for Reflection, is for men and women and is jointly sponsored by Davidson College Presbyterian Church, Davidson United Methodist Church, and St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. It will be held on Saturday, November 10, from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm at our Congregation House and led by author, poet, and retreat leader, Sister Macrina Wiederkehr. Brochures are available at our church information center. The cost is $30, which includes lunch. Childcare is available with advanced registration and $5 per child. Registration deadline is Thursday, November 1. Three people from DCPC are needed to help with hospitality on that day, specifically, making coffee and lemonade and setting out a catered lunch. If you can help, please contact Ann Williamson at 704-892-9129.

New pottery makes its debut for World Communion Sunday

Last Sunday’s worship service reminded us of our connection to the greater world — from Gordon Clark’s Minute for Mission, to the procession of the choir singing an African hymn, to the Sacrament of Communion, shared symbolically with worshippers all over the world. Guest preacher John Kuykendall reminded us of the strong history that DCPC has in regards to mission giving, but also that we can accomplish more. This Sunday’s worship theme is “Imagine the Possibilities, Our Response in the Community,” as we explore our call to reach out to those in need in our own community. The Rev. Kathy BeachVerhey will be leading worship. She has served at DCPC since 2000, currently as the role of Associate Pastor in Campus Ministry. She and her husband, Tim, have two young children and are expecting a third in November.

Pledge cards are needed to begin budgeting for 2008. Please drop yours in the offering plate, bring it by the church office, or pledge online at the DCPC website.

Young Adult Mind the Gap Gathering Are you a young adult, finished with college but not yet raising children? If so, Mind the Gap is for you. Mind the Gap is a group for single and married adults who don’t fit in the college scene but also don’t fall in the child-rearing set. This group will get together for the first time on Friday, October 19, at 6:45 pm at the home of Katherine Cole, 105 Chowton Ln, Mooresville (in the townhouses near the Lowes YMCA). The group will gather for appetizers and conversation before walking to Joel’s for sushi. Appetizers are provided. Dinner is on your own. For more information or to loosely RSVP, please contact Katherine Cole at 704-641-3149 or [email protected].

On World Communion Sunday, DCPC began to use its gift of 18 new pieces of pottery communion ware from the Blackseed Pottery Studios of Melissa Reddick. These are beautiful and unique pieces which Melissa created, and we are grateful to her for this gift, dedicated to the children of DCPC. The finished product The table was set for World Communion on Sunday with bread from around the world and kangas, which were gifts from Sigona Presbyterian Church in Kenya.

Dear Dr. Worship, I've noticed that the people who serve Communion at DCPC are a large and varied group. How are they chosen? Can I volunteer to serve? ~ Helping Hand Dear Helping, The Book of Order states that Elders, Deacons and church members authorized by the Session may assist in serving communion. Individual churches apply this in various ways, and at DCPC we ask our current officers to serve, though we have had special Communion services where youth members served. So for the most part the folks you see serving are Elders who are currently on Session, and Deacons currently serving in the Diaconate. Sometimes individuals need a substitute, and past officers are used. If you have been ordained, you can certainly volunteer to be on a substitute list, just contact the church office. -Dr. Worship Do you have a question or suggestion for Dr. Worship? Send it to [email protected].

Invitation to revival Our sister congregation, Davidson Presbyterian Church on Depot Street invites you to their revival services. On Sunday, October 14, at 5:00 pm, there is a praise and worship service with the mass choir and youth liturgical dancers. At 7:00 pm on Monday, October 15 through Wednesday, October 17, worship will feature the Rev. Dr. Paul Lowe from Shiloh Baptist Church in WinstonSalem. Homecoming is Sunday, October 21.

Seeking Chrismon trees For many years, Davidson College has been able to provide the lovely cedar trees that we decorate with Chrismons each year. But tall trees have gotten harder to find, especially as development has come to Davidson. The Worship Committee would like to inquire whether any church members have access to large (preferably free) trees, about 15-20 feet tall. Please email Greta Munger, Worship Committee chair, if you can help, at [email protected].

Faith & Family Sunday School Class This Sunday begins a three-week series on Presbyterian Basics, taught by Bill Cockrill. Faith & Family is designed with parents of children from birth through 5th grade in mind, though all are welcome. Part of the mission of this class is to build community and to be welcoming of newcomers. If you are still looking for a place to call home on Sunday mornings during the Sunday school hour, please join us!

Statistical volunteer needed The Christian Education Committee needs someone to help with statistics and class rolls. Currently, Ken Coley does a great job of recording the number of people each Sunday in our morning classes, but we need someone who can substitute for him from time to time. You would be responsible for keeping up with our total attendance numbers in all our programs, as well as make sure the rolls stay up to date. This helps us check on folks who have not come for a while. If you are interested, please contact Elizabeth Martin at 704892-3739.

Feeding the hungry The DCPC Team at the Mooresville Soup will be serving lunch on Wednesday, October 24. If you can help with this important mission, either this month or some other month, please contact Margaret Martens at [email protected] or 704-660-1957.

Betwixters invitation This is a fellowship group for those who feel too old for the Nesters and too young for the dinner club group, 50’s Plus. Single, married, with or without children - all are welcome. Our next event is in November and we would like to send out invitations via e-mail, as well as publicize in SteepleTalk. If you would like to be included in the electronic invitation, please e-mail Linda Glaser, [email protected] or Julie Hill, [email protected].

Community Missions quiz Where do DCPC members make a difference in the lives of children by tutoring? (Answer at bottom)

Halloween Carnival for Amigos de Cristo The Amigos de Cristo fall Halloween carnival for our Latino neighbors will be held on October 31 from 5:30 - 8:30 pm at the Hutnersville Farmer’s Market. We need people willing to help with a hot dog supper and games. Youth and adults are needed. If you can help, please contact Linda Steber at [email protected] or 704-892-5641. This is a great event for service hours.

Many hands make work light A lot of work goes into our Wednesday night dinners: Flowers are put on the tables, drinks are made and poured, desserts cut, food on the serving table is replenished, dishes must be washed, and tables wiped off. All of this is currently being done by a small, but committed, group of individuals. But as the saying goes, “Many hands make work light.” If you attend Wednesday dinners, please help this dedicated group of workers by signing-up to help just one Wednesday night a month. Your help can make all the difference! To volunteer, please contact Tim Stroud, [email protected] or Julie Hill, [email protected]..

“Wicked” tickets sold out The DCPC tickets for the musical, “Wicked,” have all been spoken for. Thank you for your prompt responses and payments. We are looking forward to a fun evening in April.

Celebrate the inauguration of Davidson’s new president

Celebrate the inauguration of Davidson College’s 17th President, Tom Ross, on Saturday, October 27. As a show of support for our sister institution, the Session and Board of Deacons of the Davidson College Presbyterian Church agreed to offer a hospitality table and to open our church’s restroom facilities to the crowd of 4,000 that is expected for this momentous event. Would you be willing to help staff the refreshment table or offer directions to our restroom facilities that morning? Or, would you be able to Tom Ross purchase refreshments and/or prepare them early that morning? Please contact Kathy if you can help, [email protected] or 704-892-5641, ext. 12 at the church.

Cold-weather clothing needed Fall is here and winter is coming. During October, Crisis Assistance Ministry requests winter coats, hats, and gloves for those who will be cold without them. All sizes of outer apparel are needed, for both children and adults. If you have any of these items you no longer need, please put them in the parlor closet for pick-up and delivery to CAM downtown. As always, donations are greatly appreciated.

Flu shots available by appointment The Parish Nurse Ministry at Ada Jenkins Center is offering flu shots, by appointment only, on Saturday, November 3. Please call 704-896-0471, ext. 111 for appointment. Pneumonia shots will also be available.

Acolytes needed to assist at 11:00 am worship One of the ways children can help as leaders in worship is to serve as acolytes during the 11:00 am worship service. Children from 2nd grade through 5th grade are invited to be acolytes or servers in worship. Acolytes lead in worship by bringing in the light which symbolizes the light of Christ and helping with the elements for the Sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper. There will be two times for training as acolytes - Sunday, October 14 and 21, at 9:00 am in the sanctuary.

Delivery help needed for Loaves and Fishes Help is needed delivering food to Loaves & Fishes the first Sunday of the month. We need help to deliver and stock the shelves in the Loaves and Fishes pantry at the Ada Jenkins Center right after the 11:00 worship service. This important mission only takes and hour. For more information, please email Bill Vinson at [email protected], noting “Loaves & Fishes” in the subject line.

Activities will include hayrides to the pumpkin patch, a petting farm, face painting, and more. Refreshments will be served at the picnic area. The cost is $5.00 per person, with children under the age of 2 free. If you have any questions, please contact Susan Burhans, 704-895-9011 or [email protected]. Nesters is a fellowship group for families with children birth through fifth grade. Almost every week, a brief newsletter goes out highlighting those activities of special interest to this group. If you are not receiving this newsletter and would like to, please email Robbie Howiler, [email protected]..

2007 Annual Women’s Retreat a success The 2007 Annual Women’s Retreat was a great success. Thirty-one women gathered at the William Black Lodge in Montreat, NC for worship and discussion about waiting in the presence of God. We talked about waiting as a gift and a way to center our lives around the Lord in prayer but also in opening ourselves up to new ways of service and living. We had lots of fun doing some games together and hiking up Lookout Mountain. Some of us shopped and read. We all found time to rest and to share our lives together. We had a fun gathering on Saturday night at the Brueggemann home. Worship on Sunday sent us on our way to live more fully. Plan now for next year’s retreat. We have moved it a week later to the last weekend in September. The retreat is a wonderful way to strengthen ties to others and to the church.

There is room for you at Room at the Table Our “table” has grown, but there is still Room at the Table for YOU. Between 120 and 160 adults and children of all ages gather each Wednesday night in the Congregation House for table fellowship and worship. The food is fabulous this year: Cajun chicken, homemade barbeque, baked ziti, seven vegetable couscous, fresh broccoli and cauliflower. For vegetarians we have had stuffed tomatoes, Moroccan seasoned portabella mushrooms and more. And for the children there has been grilled cheese sandwiches, homemade individual pizza, and, of course, chicken nuggets. After dinner, we gather for a brief informal time of worship. We have had storytellers, dramas, and this past week, the children came together to act out the story of Moses as a baby. And each week, we definitely have the opportunity to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord!” Won’t you join us? Reservations can be made by going to our web site and clicking on Room at the Table or by contacting Patti Loner by noon on Monday, [email protected], 704-892-5641.
