Campus Principal’s Report—Sharon Nichols On Friday, 9 October the students and staff returned from another very successful visit to our two sister schools in Japan. The tour was packed with sightseeing activities in Kyoto and Osaka with the school visit and homestay in between. The Japanese host families are very hospitable and this ensured our students very quickly overcame any fears and concerns they may have had prior to the homestay. I am very proud to report that they all did a magnificent job. It is a huge achievement for our students to be immersed in another culture for that period of time. The language differences and other things like the food and customs can be daunting, even for the adults. The parents of our students have a right to feel very proud of their children and as Campus Principal of the school I am also very proud of their success. I would also like to acknowledge the magnificent work that was undertaken by the staff who joined me on the tour: Erin Campbell, Chizuru Takahashi, Vicki Kalpakas and Cheryl Kerr. It is another example of great teamwork. The tour visited many different sites around Kyoto and Osaka and throughout the journey we caught buses and trains and the experience of travelling on the bullet train is always very special. The temples and shrines are very impressive and one example of this is the Golden Temple, in Kyoto. I need to also thank Chizuru Takahashi, who provided an enormous amount of support in dealing with interpreting labels, ordering and assisting when things got a little bit hectic, especially at the busy train stations and restaurants. Special mention to head of communications Cheryl Kerr who completed daily blogs and posted photos on the Facebook page to keep families updated. Finally, I am happy to report that the Sister School agreement was renewed for another 2 years as part of the official duty. The Principals in Mito are very keen to ensure that the relationship continues for many years to come. The next time our school visits in 2017 will be the 20th anniversary of the sister school relationship which will be acknowledged and celebrated.

Sister School Visit 2015 Hello my name is Sarra Alameh. I was one of the selected students to go to Japan. I had an amazing time over there and learnt heaps as well as made new friends. We had heaps of fun and went to lots of places, like the Golden Temple, Movie World and lots more. I found the Golden Temple the most interesting as we learnt so much there. I was hosted by a girl named Ami Yamada. We went to an amusement park called Lagunasia which was fun and we also went bowling. Some of the differences between schools were that they have to clean their whole school. Also they have to wear slippers in the school and when they go out they have to swap into their runners and wear them in the yard. They also have different shoes for the gym. For those that are interested in going to Japan in 2017, I would highly recommend you going. It is a great opportunity to see new things and make new friends. We also had so much fun and you learn so much about Japan that you wouldn’t learn in Australia. Sarra Alameh 6BL My name is Jiah and a couple of weeks ago I left for Japan with our school. I had lots of fun over there, experiencing all the traditions and cultures. My favourite place was Kyoto because it was a lot more traditional than Osaka, although I still enjoyed Osaka. I was hosted by a girl named Sumire Nakayama. I enjoyed my time with the family, it was lots of fun. I tried lots of new things such as Gyoza and sushi train. My favourite place I went to with my host family was Lagunasia, because there were lots of rides that we went on multiple times, not only that but I got to go there with my new friends. Some differences and similarities between our schools were: taking our shoes off before you go into class, the different subjects they do and their school has stairs. Also they don’t eat outside, they clean their own school, have an anthem and their tables are single. My message to students who are interested in going in 2017 would be to go because it’s a once in a life time experience, it’s a beautiful place and so much more different than Australia. Jiah Deguara 6BL On the 26 September 2015, I and some other kids went to Kyoto, Japan. It was a good experience. I visited Kinkaku-ji temple (also known as Golden temple), Nara deer park and much more. My most favourite was Nara deer park because it has more than 1000 deer and the deer were cute. They chased you a lot if you had a biscuit in your hand. They were funny, too. Because it is traditional in Japan to bow, the deer bowed to you before eating. Did you know Kyoto was the capital city for 1000 years? Before that, it was Nara. After 4 days, we went to Mito Nanbu Primary School. I stayed with a girl named Nao. I had hosted her last year, so I already knew her. Life in Japan was different. We ate on a tatami straw mat; we had to say “Itadakimas” before we eat and had to pray for Buddha. We had a party on the second day with some other people who were staying with host families. At the party, we learned how to cook takoyaki. It was so amazing. It tasted better than it looked. They also took me to an amazement park. That was awesome. School was different, too. Their classroom was so quiet. And every day, children would clean their classrooms. I made friends with Nao, Miwa, Sumire, Karen, Ami, Yuma, Coco and Niko and more. Mito Nanbu Primary School was as big as an elephant. It was beautiful. When we left, I was sad. Everybody was. If you are interested in going to Japan in 2017, I guarantee it will be a good experience. Good luck for those who are going in 2017! Maya Chaparro 5MX

Sister School Visit 2016 I was one of the lucky 6 students from Sydenham Campus to travel to Japan. We visited Kyoto, the sister school (Mito Nanbu) and Osaka. We went to many places in both Osaka and Kyoto. I had a lot of fun going to all the places and exploring them. One thing we all noticed is that there were so many vending machines! I found the aquarium very interesting! We also went to a High School festival and it was so good! I had so much fun with the other students from the Hillside Campus and I got along pretty well with them! I was hosted by Miwa Enomoto and her family. They were very nice and made me feel like I was at home even though I was in Japan and very far away from my actual family. We went to Nagashima Spa Land with my host family on the Sunday and it was so much fun! I had lots of fun with them and I was so upset to have to leave them. There were not many differences between our school and their school. The only major difference was when we had to take our shoes off inside and then put them back on when we went outside. They spoke English quite well also! We had Science, Music and Calligraphy which was so much fun! For the people who are thinking about going in 2017, do it! It is a very good experience and you get to know more about the Japanese culture and how interesting it is. You might be afraid of leaving your family, but it’s an amazing experience! Clare Thynne 6LO On 26 September 2015, 12 lucky students, including me, boarded a plane headed for Japan. Six students were from Sydenham Campus and the other 6 from Hillside Campus, joining us were 5 teachers from both campuses. Our first stop was Kyoto and then we moved onto our sister school Mito Nanbu and finally ending in Osaka. The place I loved most was the Osaka Aquarium it was really cool. They have so many different animals such as lizards, otters, dolphins and more. After the Aquarium some of us went on Tempozan one of the biggest Ferris Wheels in the world. It is 112.5 meters high and has 68 passenger cars with a total capacity of 480 people. Although it meant facing my fears I still went on it. I was scared until we got about a quarter of the way up, then I just relaxed and took some photos on my camera. As part of our trip we got to experience how Japanese families live, by staying with a host family. I was hosted by Karen Nakamura who I hosted last year. I had loads of fun with her and her family. We went to Sea World, cooked lots of interesting foods and did much more. Karen’s house was a single story and was full of her calligraphy. Calligraphy is an art made by dipping a brush in ink and painting Japanese characters. Karen is number one in the whole of Japan for calligraphy and her younger sister, Yayoi, is 6th. Our sister school has some differences to our school I will list a few now: the children don’t have snack, they wear slippers in school and they don’t have to wear a school uniform. For those who are thinking about going to Japan in 2017 I would do it. When we went some of us thought we were going to get homesick but we ended up having so much fun that there wasn’t any time to feel homesick. I had a fantastic time and I hope many of you will enjoy it in the future. Madeleine Lassig 6LO

Hi my name is Eric. I was one of the lucky ones to be able to go to Japan. During my time in Japan I learnt the Japanese way of life and the Japanese school life. I went to many places in Japan like the Zoo, the Aquarium, Train Museum, Temples and Nara Park. I had lots of fun. Then it was with the host family for 4 days. My host and his family were really kind and I had fun with them. My host’s name is Yuma, we communicated well and had lots of fun together. They took me to lots of places around Japan and bought me lots of gifts. Overall I had a great time in Japan, and if anyone is thinking of going to Japan, I would really recommend going. It’s a great chance to learn about the Japanese cultures. Eric Nguyen 5MJ

Camp was the best. It was quite a fest. There was the best food. You should have come dude. We went on a bike. I was wearing Nikes. I went on the giant swing. I felt like I had wings. My vocal cords were about to pop. Like a balloon about to pop. My tooth came out without a doubt. I truly did pout. I broke one of the rules. For being too cool. I built a giant hut. I got a lot of cuts. While I was sleeping. Everyone kept peeking. Zac Stocks 4JG

Grade 4 Camp

Camp was the best. I had a blast. I didn’t get much rest. The time went fast. My favourite was the giant swing. I got a great big fright. The harness made my body fling. At the end I felt alright. I felt like doing it all twice. But I didn’t get the chance. The staff were all so nice. The made my heart dance. By Tahleiya Horton 4JG

Student artwork on public display! Recently, a collection of artwork from students in grades Prep, One, Two, Four and Six were placed on display for three weeks at the Granary Café in Sunshine. A celebration of their creative talents was held at the café on 13 October and it was great to see students attend with their families and share the excitement of seeing their artwork framed and up on display for the wider community to see. Photos of the entire exhibition can be viewed on the Gallery Sunshine Everywhere website in the art gallery section (27 September 2015) at gallerysunshine.com. Mrs Davey Creative Sustainability
