T᷄e᷄na᷄ koe, Greetings everyone I hope that this finds your family well after the tumultuous days we have had here in Havelock North recently. We are certainly very happy to have our students back and settled into their learning routines. We have had to juggle and reschedule events and thank you very much for your understanding of this. It has also been heartening to see how our community has pulled together through this: helping each other, checking on each other ensuring basic needs such as water is met. Our school has benefitted from the kindness of many people and we are most grateful. We have four weeks of learning left in this term. Classes are diving into the ‘Changemakers’ topic and after exploring aspects of this, and those who are or have made a difference, are now looking to make a difference themselves. We have a number of exciting projects underway ranging from raising funds for a water project in Sudan to building lunch tables to use outside some classrooms. We will keep you up-to-date with news via our Facebook page. Next week we have several individuals and four teams competing at the AIMS games in Tauranga. We wish them all the best for challenging competition and know that they will really enjoy the experience. Huge thanks to all the parents who are going and/or have helped to fundraise and prepare the teams for the competition: in particular the coaches who have given so much time and commitment. Our open evening last week was very well attended. The enrolment process has been underway for a few weeks now and we have been excited to meet the students and families who will be joining us in 2017. Our current students have done us proud - visiting schools with us, and attending the open evening to talk about the opportunities here at HNI. Finally a few reminders - please ensure our uniform is worn as well as it can be. The sock situation is improving and white ankle socks are in abundance. We proudly noticed this on the TV news when our students legs were filmed walking into school! Students must wear our school uniform or bring a note for a uniform pass. We do have a lot of lost property so if you are missing items, please encourage students to come to the office and search through this.

Our electives programme will end this term and it has been wonderful to see students involved all the different activities available. We are however still out of pocket to the tune of a couple of thousand dollars, when all the small charges are added up. Please will you make sure this money owed is paid. We look forward to the focused learning that is ahead of us as we progress to spring. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or any of the Leadership team if you have any queries.

On Friday 26th, Amy from the SPCA came to talk in the assembly along with 2 dogs and a cat. She told the school about what the SPCA do. We also heard the stories that went along with each animal she bought. Every student really seemed to enjoy seeing the animals - and learning a bit about their pasts. A cheque was presented in the assembly for over $700 dollars. This was the money that was raised from the HNI mufti day and HNI Cupcake Day. As a school, we can be very proud of raising this amount and the money will go a long way to protect the animals at the SPCA Hastings & Districts.

The music department at HNI has had a very couple of weeks with our students competing in two competitions. Last Wednesday 10 August, our choir HNI Voices, sang in the Kids' Sing Competition, which this year was held at HNI. Our 90 strong group performed exceptionally well and were awarded a GOLD. They sang three items including the test piece. May the Road Rise to Meet You, arranged by NZ composer, David Hamilton. The two choice pieces were Impuku Nekati, which is a lovely round and is from our up coming show The Button Box, and Take These Wings. .A huge thank you goes to Mrs Susan Melville who trained our students to such a high level. You can hear the choir on the HNI Face Book page. On Tuesday 16 August our two Rock Bands competed in the Rock Shop Band Quest, which was held in Napier's Municipal theatre. We had our fingers crossed that everyone was going to be well enough and fortunately we had a full turn out. Both bands, Concussion (Bronson Cotter – lead guitar, Riley Byford-Smith – drums, Alex Congalton – bass guitar and Connor Grant – saxophone) and Lake Snail (Ben bush – lead guitar, Alex Congalton – bass guitar and Bronson Cotter – drums), performed original songs. Ben was awarded "Killer Guitarist", best lyrics and best original song. Lake Snail were also placed 2nd overall. Congratulations to both bands and in particular to Ben and Lake Snail. Also a thanks to Kurt Yates who has rehearsed both band every Monday after school. We have had 3 students sit ABRSM music theory exams so far this year. Congratulations to Connor Grant and Emilie Horsfall on passing grade 2 and Anja Edwards on passing grade 1.More students will sit a theory exam in the next session on Saturday 5 November. Our students have more musical events over the next three weeks. Our choir is singing at HNHS Music 2016 on Wednesday 24 August and at the Te Mata assembly on Friday 26 August. Also members of the Junior Jazz Band will also be performing at Music 2016. On Thursday 1 September our hall will be alive with the sound of orchestral music as we are hosting the 5th Big Orchestral Play In Day. It is great to see so many students involved and committed to our music programme
