The document is intended for qualified technicians and electricians with advanced knowledge in electrical engineering and fieldbus technology and systems, allowing them to estimate the risks and hazards of operating the device and to integrate it into systems with components of other manufacturers. Qualified technicians are to read all the sections of this document and understand the contents before starting any work on the control system, qualified technicians must have access to this document at all times.

Technical Information WS103 Remote Solution Overview WS103 remote solution The WS103 interface is designed to provide wireless access to the CAN data of a vehicle, machine, or system via WLAN / Bluetooth®. The WS103 is a stand-alone multiradio module which includes Wi-Fi®, Classic Bluetooth® and Bluetooth® Low Energy (planned). The Wi-Fi® support conforms to IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, and has support for dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz operation. The module can be used as CAN-WLAN/Bluetooth® interface or wireless CAN-CAN bridge. In a CANWLAN / Bluetooth® interface, the module is used for transmission of CAN data to other WLAN/Bluetooth®/ network devices, such as computers, smartphones, or tablets on which the CAN data can be managed and evaluated. The data exchange is bidirectional when the device is configured as a WLAN/Bluetooth® interface via software. In a wireless CAN-CAN bridge, CAN data is transmitted wireless between two WS103 modules. The CANCAN bridge serves as a replacement for a CAN cable for more efficient and dependable communication of operational data over long runs and moving joints. The interface is suitable for use in mobile and stationary systems for industrial, agricultural, and forestry machinery. The WS103 is an Easy-to-Install plastic enclosure which can be bolted to a panel. Danfoss has no responsibility for any consequences, direct or indirect, caused by failures or malfunctions. • Danfoss has no responsibility for any accidents caused by incorrectly mounted or maintained equipment. • Danfoss does not assume any responsibility for Danfoss products being incorrectly applied or the system being programmed in a manner that jeopardizes safety. • All safety critical systems shall include an emergency stop to switch off the main supply voltage for the outputs of the electronic control system. All safety critical components shall be installed in such a way that the main supply voltage can be switched off at any time. The emergency stop must be easily accessible to the operator.

Technical Information WS103 Remote Solution Overview FCC notice The device(s) described in this manual may only be used in mobile or stationary systems in which under normal operating conditions the separation distance between the antenna(s) and all persons is at least 20 cm (8 in). The antenna(s) (internal or external) must further not be co-located or operated in conjunction with any antenna or transmitter. Compliance of WS unit devices in all final product configurations is the responsibility of the integrator. This equipment has been tested and found to comply with Part 15 of the FCC Rules with the limits for a digital instrument of class B. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures: • Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna. • Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver. • Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected. • Consult the dealer or an experienced radio / TV technician for help. Loss of FCC certification possible: • Only use antennas that are suitable for the frequency range used so that the device does not lose its wireless qualification; only approved antennas may be used. • It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure that the external antenna used does not remove the wireless qualification. • Keep the end of the antenna away from metal components to avoid interference. Modifications not expressly approved by the manufacturer could void the user's authority to operate the equipment under FCC rules.

Danger due to possibly deficient data transmission. WS unit operates using radio signals and cellular networks and is not authorized for use in safety-related applications. Deficient network coverage, failure or malfunction of the device may lead to deficient data transmission. Because of this, connection cannot be guaranteed at all times under all conditions. Do not operate the device in machines and applications where life depends on the proper operation of this piece of equipment. • Never rely solely upon any wireless device for essential communications.



Health care facilities

Warning

Danger of interference caused by RF energy. Medical equipment may be sensitive to RF energy. When in a hospital or other health care facility, observe the restrictions on the use of cellular communication equipment. • Switch WS unit off, if instructed to do so by the guidelines posted in sensitive areas. • The operation of cardiac pacemakers, other implanted medical device and hearing aids can be affected by interference from WS unit's antennas placed close to the device. • If in doubt about potential danger, contact a physician or the manufacturer of the implanted medical device to verify that it is properly shielded. • Pacemaker patients are advised to keep WS unit and its antennas away from the pacemaker while it is on.



Air traffic communications

Danger of interference caused by RF energy. The operation of wireless appliances in an aircraft is forbidden to prevent interference with communications systems. Failure to observe these instructions may lead to the suspension or denial of cellular services to the offender, legal action, or both. 1. Switch off WS unit before boarding an aircraft. 2. Make sure it cannot be switched on inadvertently. Explosive areas

Danger of explosion. The device does not comply with Directive 94/9/EC and must therefore not be used in potentially explosive areas.

Observe the applicable regulations and precautions when you are near explosive areas (such as petrol stations, fuel depots, chemical plants or where blasting operations are in progress). To reduce the level of RF exposure, increase the distance between wireless devices and people. The antenna(s) used for the WS devices should be a separation distance of at least 20 cm (8 in) from all persons. Electronic equipment interference

Danger of electronic equipement interference caused by RF energy. WS unit receives and transmits radio frequency energy while switched on. Interference can occur if it is used close to TV sets, radios, computers or inadequately shielded equipment. Follow any special regulations and always switch off the WS unit wherever forbidden, or when you suspect that it may cause interference or damage.

Installation

Warning

Unintended movement of the machine or mechanism may cause injury to the technician or bystanders. To protect against unintended movement, before any installation make sure the ignition lock is turned off and the battery is disconnected. Disconnect the device before handling it, also disconnect any independently supplied output load circuits. Power supply and connection

Warning

Damage may occur to the device when connecting/disconnecting. To avoid damage to the device, the supply voltage, must be within the operating range. Connect the supply voltage connections to a power supply. Protect the devise by using a fuse. Requisite fuse level should be 5 A, fast (F). Also, connect/ disconnect the main connector only if the power supply to the device is switched off.

Caution

Trouble free communication cannot be ensured unless WS is connected correctly. Connect the WS to the same power and ground as the control system. The power supply must be common to both the WS and the control unit to ensure trouble free communication. Most importantly, the ground connection, must be the same. Polarity reversal

Polarity reversal can damage the WS device. An external fuse, max 5 A (Fast) must be used to protect the WS device against power supply polarity reversal.

International Protection Marking of IP 67 rating is not ensured if all connectors are not plugged in. Before exposing the device to dust and water, plug in all connectors. Do not immerse the device in water or other liquids. Make sure that WS devices are stored and transported at a temperature between -40 °C and +85 °C or -40 °F and +185 °F respectively. Machine wiring guidelines

Protect wires from mechanical abuse, run wires in flexible metal or plastic conduits. Use 85˚ C (185˚ F) wire with abrasion resistant insulation and 105˚ C (221˚ F) wire should be considered near hot surfaces. Use a wire size that is appropriate for the module connector. Separate high current wires such as solenoids, lights, alternators or fuel pumps from sensor and other noise-sensitive input wires. Run wires along the inside of, or close to, metal machine surfaces where possible, this simulates a shield which will minimize the effects of EMI/RFI radiation. Do not run wires near sharp metal corners, consider running wires through a grommet when rounding a corner. Do not run wires near hot machine members. Provide strain relief for all wires. Avoid running wires near moving or vibrating components. Avoid long, unsupported wire spans. Ground electronic modules to a dedicated conductor of sufficient size that is connected to the battery (-). Power the sensors and valve drive circuits by their dedicated wired power sources and ground returns. Twist sensor lines about one turn every 10 cm (4 in). Use wire harness anchors that will allow wires to float with respect to the machine rather than rigid anchors.

Unused pins on mating connectors may cause intermittent product performance or premature failure. Plug all pins on mating connectors.

Turn the engine off. Remove electronic components from the machine before any arc welding. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Do not use electrical components to ground the welder. Clamp the ground cable for the welder to the component that will be welded as close as possible to the weld.

Technical Information WS103 Remote Solution Functions Operating modes WS103 is a stand-alone multiradio module that supports Wi-Fi®, Classic Bluetooth®, and Bluetooth® Low Energy (planned). It can run as a single radio module with only one radio-mode enabled or as a true multiradio module with both Bluetooth® and Wi-Fi® enabled concurrently. When WS103 runs as a multiradio module, coexistence is handled internally and will swap between Bluetooth® and Wi-Fi® when needed and ensures that no transmissions occur simultaneously. The WS103 interface is designed to provide wireless access to the CAN data of a vehicle or machine or system via WLAN / Bluetooth®. The module can be used as CAN-WLAN / Bluetooth® interface or wireless CAN-CAN bridge. In a CAN-WLAN / Bluetooth® interface, WS103 is used for transmission of CAN data to other WLAN / Bluetooth® / network devices, such as computers, smartphones or tablets on which the CAN data can be managed and evaluated. Power modes Power saving mode is available to optimize the power consumption. To enable the power saving mode the device must be configured by using the WS Wireless Configurator and the PIN3 will be used to enable this functionality. Host processor The host processor is composed of a high-performance ARM® Cortex® M4 microcontroller (MCU) The MCU operates at a system frequency of up to 168 MHz and has 1 MB of Flash and 256 KB of RAM memory. The dimensioning memory size (32 MB) allows sufficient reserves to implement additional firmware features at a later date. CAN interface WS103 features one CAN interface. Communication through various CAN protocols such as CANopen, J1939, is possible. The CAN interface meets the specification CAN 2.0 A/B protocol and the physical layer according to ISO 11898-2 high-speed up to 1 Mbit/s. Support for CAN-FD is not available. The CAN interface is operational only when power supply is energized. Serial interface The serial port RS-232 is used to configure the WS103 by using the WS wireless configurator and to upgrade the FW of the device by using WS FW programmer. The max bit rate on the serial port is 230 kbit/s. WLAN frequencies A Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) uses Radio Frequency (RF) technology to transmit and receive data over the air. To enable transmission of different types of communication as data, it is essential that hardware and software comply to specified standards. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) have established the IEEE 802.11 standard, which is the most used WLAN standard of today. WLAN products based on the 802.11b/g standards operate in the 2.400 to 2.497 GHz frequency range. APs supporting the 802.11b/g standard have up to 14 channels with center frequencies that are 5 MHz apart (applies to channel 1 to 13) either 22 MHz (802.11b) or 20 MHz (802.11g), the center frequencies for non-overlapping channels must be at least 25 MHz apart. Warning

If the frequency bands are U-NII-2 (5.260 to 5.320 GHz) and U-NII-2 extended (5.500 to 5.700 GHz), the module can be operated as a DFS slave / client device. The Japan Radio Equipment Compliance (TELEC) only approves the use of the 2.4 GHz frequency band (channels 1-13). The operation of the module in the 5 GHz frequency band is prohibited in Japan. If the frequency band is 5150 MHz to 5250 MHz (5 GHz, channel 34-48), the module is limited to operation within buildings to reduce any possibility of harmful interference to co-channel MSS operations.

WLAN mode infrastructure There are two types of WLAN topologies: the ad-hoc mode and the infrastructure mode. The infrastructure mode, is used to incorporate the wireless clients into an existing wired LAN infrastructure. In the infrastructure mode all communication is passed through the Access Points (APs) that are connected to the wired LAN. A single AP communicating with a number of clients is called a Basic Service Set (BSS). A number of interconnected APs with the same network name is called an Extended Service Set (ESS). An AP that holds information about the mobile clients authorized to enter the system is called an autonomous AP (or "fat" AP), whereas an AP that only is responsible for forwarding received data, is called a controller-based AP (or "thin" AP). While the autonomous APs carry out all wired to wireless packet format conversion, encryption, QoS application, and RF statistics monitoring, the very thinnest APs pass all of this to their central controller, and act basically just as a media converter. WLAN infrastructure and PLUS+1® Service Tool With WS103 installed on the CANbus of a machine equipped with PLUS+1® control system, it can be configured to be connected to an AP and Service Tool program running on a laptop connected to the same AP the user can connect wireless to a PLUS+1® control system and manage it remotely. For more information see the installation guide document. WLAN CAN to CAN bridging Two WS103 modules can be configured as a CAN-CAN bridge. Every (or selected) CAN message received by one WS103 is sent through Wi-Fi® and managed by the second WS103. For more information see WS103 Remote Solution Installation Guide, AN00000339. Access control and security Since the physical layer in a WLAN is broadcast over the air, the normal methods to control a conventional LAN cannot be used. To secure the WLAN from intruders, authentication and encryption are important factors. Measures, like creating a MAC address filter, make it a little more difficult for intruders to access and use the WLAN. There are stronger methods, such as using authentication, but these often require dedicated servers or other hardware. 20 | © Danfoss | April 2016

Technical Information WS103 Remote Solution Functions Encryption helps to protect the information sent over the air. That way an intruder will not be able to access the information that is sent over the air. The encryption types used are WEP, WPA, WPA2, PEAP, EAP-TLS (planned). Security can be divided in two parts: • Authentication ensures that the identities of the two communication peers are correct and can be trusted. • Privacy aims to protect the communication from eavesdropping by encryption. Authentication and privacy are independent of each other but are often specified to be used together. Bluetooth® mode Bluetooth® is a global wireless communication standard that connects devices together over a certain distance. The most common today are Bluetooth® BR/EDR (basic rate/enhanced data rate) and Bluetooth® with low energy functionality. WS103 includes both Bluetooth® Classic (2.1 + EDR) and Bluetooth® Low Energy (planned). In order to use Bluetooth® technology, a device must be compatible with the subset of Bluetooth® profiles necessary to use the desired services. A Bluetooth® profile is a specification regarding an aspect of Bluetooth®-based wireless communication between devices. The Serial Port Profile (SPP) service is used to establish a communication between the laptop and WS103 via Bluetooth®. Bluetooth® and PLUS+1® Service Tool With WS103 installed on the CANbus of a machine equipped with PLUS+1® control system, it can be configured to be paired with a laptop and the user can connect wirelessly to a PLUS+1® control system and manage it remotely by using the PLUS+1® Service Tool.
