Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch and Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch Foundation Annual Reports 2013

President’s Report Gene D. Kaseman Normal is defined as ordinary, average. After the devastating floods of 2011 and all the subsequent recovery efforts of 2012, this year, 2013, is so far a normal year for the Ranch. However, keep in mind that when you provide a home for 108 boys and girls 24 hours a day, normal has a somewhat different meaning. In 2012, we did a huge amount of work repairing flood damage and making improvements as we did so. The only major effort left in the flood recovery, is relocation of protective dikes and some clean up along the river banks and what used to be a picnic grounds. We did lose the Minot Community Youth Home, which was used as a way to transition youth into the community, but this program is being moved onto the Minot campus. We have had an above average rainfall throughout North Dakota, which in turn has made our well landscaped campuses even more lush and beautiful. The flowers planted this spring along with all the other landscape work is quite impressive. It also is important for our programs. Well-kept and welllandscaped grounds create a positive attitude and feeling that is carried into the living and work areas of our residents and staff. By casual observation, I have noticed that when the grounds don’t look good, the inside of the living and work areas is sometimes lacking.

A major activity on the Minot campus is the refurbishment of our Family Living Unit. This four-bedroom apartment building, which also houses our Spiritual Life Program offices and classroom, was built in 1982. It has been an important resource for families to visit their children on campus and do therapy. We dedicated the Family Living Unit at the Aug. 23 board of directors meeting. On our Fargo campus, we continue efforts to eventually complete the second phase of the campus, the much-needed gym and chapel. Like the other campuses, the grounds look wonderful, having benefited from the abundant rain. Somewhat of a “make work project” for the residents. If your travels this summer take you near one of our campuses in Minot, Bismarck or Fargo N.D., please stop by. We would love to give you a tour and have you see our programs first hand! God’s Blessings,

Gene D. Kaseman President

The rainfall also is good for our pasture and hay crops. We have about 22 horses in residential and they have as big an appetite as the growing teenage boys and girls that ride them! Chaplain Rick Jones recently gave the Ranch a chance to be part of a ministry similar to the Ranch, but it is based in Kenya, Africa. It is a mission of the national Lutheran Church that works with troubled African youth who have some of the same issues facing our boys and girls. Chaplain Jones was able to establish a question-and-answer dialogue between “us and them,” which was unique and a good learning experience. A rather unique event this summer has been the marriage ceremony of one of our former residents in the Kruse Memorial Chapel on the Minot Campus— this is a testament to how our residents relate to the Ranch years after they are discharged.

Chairman’s Report, Program Maxine Beckwith “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.” This is Paul’s greeting to the Romans. He goes on to write “First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world.” (Romans 1:8) I thank you for your faith and support. Serving at-risk children and their families in the name of Jesus Christ continues to be the Mission of Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch. I need to stress that the employees at the Ranch fulfill this mission. They work so very hard to provide the services necessary to the clients served. This is a 24/7 job by absolutely everyone on the three campuses. It starts at the top with our President, Gene Kaseman, and continues down the chain to include everyone on the payroll at DBGR. I am always impressed when staff gives presentations to the Board how committed they are to the children and their families and how openly they share their faith not only with us but also the children. No need to wonder why we have such a great success rate. God is at work in all of us insuring that these young people get the best care and services. Please continue to pray for the employees and young people and their families.

being added. In order to build relationships with the children, staff needs to know the children. By working full-time this should provide more opportunity to do this. In Proverbs 19:17, it says: “He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward him for what he has done.” Your contributions to Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch are appreciated and God will reward you for reaching out to the at-risk children served by the Ranch. God’s blessings to each and every one of you, Maxine M. Beckwith Maxine M. Beckwith, Chair

All three campuses ran summer programs. This allowed the children to work on the grounds, thrift stores and warehouses. This gives the children ownership in DBGR. Yes, they receive a small salary. A special thank you to the Foundation for funding this venture. By having the children working with other adults they see appropriate modeling in the workplace. Hopefully this will give them additional skills for job success in the future. The housing situation has been temporarily alleviated when we purchased some housing. Staff can rent an apartment at a reduced rate. So far this has been good for us and staff. As an incentive to keep staff, more full-time staff is

Chairman’s Report, Foundation Scott Differding Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch had a very busy year. We continue to be a top residential treatment provider in the upper Midwest. One major concern has been the increase in health care for our employees. We are working on ways to reduce our costs in other areas to remain in line with our budget. We thank each and every one of you for your gracious gifts throughout the year. Without these gifts, we wouldn’t be able to continue on, and grow, each year. One major hurdle that we have had to overcome is the housing issue for our employees. The economic conditions and the previous year’s flooding have put a shortage on affordable housing. We acquired a 16-unit apartment in the Minot area and can now supply affordable housing units for our staff, therefore attracting new and qualified people to the area. Our staff is extremely important to us, and being successful in teaching and caring for the children. We have hired a new Education/Superintendent this year and are very excited to have Marcia Bartok start with us. We welcome Marcia to our family.

at the touch of a screen, this increases the pressure kids have to deal with today. Suicide has become a very hot topic in the area, and we are taking a long look at what we can do about suicide prevention and education. In North Dakota, there is one suicide attempt every three days. We are taking an active role in finding ways to educate and help our children realize that life doesn’t have to end this way. There are other choices.

Proverbs 22:6 Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it.

We are thankful for all the financial support given to the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch. Continue to pray for our children and teachers throughout the next year giving them the guidance they need to get through all the triumphs and tribulations that they will come across. Godbless, Scott Differding, chair

The thrift stores continue to be a major source of income for the Ranch. There were expansions completed in Bismarck and Grand Forks and a new expansion is being planned for the Fargo area. These stores help support our programs for the children, and without donations to these stores, we would not be able to reach all of the children. During these times, children face a lot of peer pressure from other children, especially with social media changing day-to-day life. Growing up in today’s world is very different than the way I grew up. From the instant gratification of information, to the ability to broadcast everything everyone does
