Sometimes bridge is an endurance race, sometimes a sprint. With a two-day qualifying event, we are somewhere between the two, since it is possible to put yourself in position NOT to qualify but not to get your ticket stamped for the knockout stages. Amongst the teams who have put themselves in with a decent chance of advancing are the Russian Mnepo team, leading the Japanese Takk team, from the multinational Microchiroptera and Turkey's Major. From 5th to 8th are the Australasian Cornell team, the largely Polish Sakr squad, Norway's Helgeness, and citizens of the world Pszczola.

8TH EUROPEAN OPEN BRIDGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Montecatini, Italy

CH A MP I ON S H I P D I A R Y Mark Horton When we arrived at the venue we discovered the office had tables - but no chairs, thereby giving added weight to the old adage - 'they also serve who only stand and wait'. In Virginibus Puerisque (published in 1881) Robert Louis Stevenson wrote: "Little do ye know your own blessedness; for to travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive, and the true success is to labour." That was certainly true for a number of the contestants: Janice Seamon-Molson arrived without her luggage; Karen McCallum decided to spend a day in Rome (perhaps planning to visit the Sistine Chapel?) before travelling to Montecatini, but she fell asleep and saw only the ceiling of her hotel room; Brian Senior was due to fly to Pisa from Leeds/Bradford airport with Sandra Penfold. He drove to her house to collect her. Meanwhile she had driven to the airport and by the time Brian realised his mistake their plane had taken off. Needing to visit the playing room in search of Dimitri Ballas I found him just before the start of Round 2. He was helping a lady to try and find her missing convention card. When their efforts proved to be fruitless and (distraught) she asked what she could do. I called to mind a poem by Dorothy Parker: Razors pain you; Rivers are damp; Acids stain you; And drugs cause cramp. Guns aren't lawful; Nooses give; Gas smells awful; You might as well live.

Dimitri Ballas You will readily understand that we kept an eye on the cricket match between England and Australia. The tradition is to clap when a wicket falls (provided it is Australian) or if a batsman reaches 50,100, 150 etc (provided it is an Englishman). Jos Jacobs (a keen follower of the game announced the fall of a wicket and mentioned the batsman's name. "Meckwell's out?" queried Brent Manley. "Maxwell" he was informed. For the Latin scholars amongst you (in the loosest possible sense) in Round 2 Vinci played Vicky. Where was Vidi? 8TH EUROPEAN OPEN BRIDGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Montecatini, Italy ROUND 1 MIXED TEAMS

H E LG E N E S S v s D A R L I N G David Bird The championship kicked off and I was happy to watch the match between Helgeness and the Darling team from Australia. The action on this deal depended solely on the opening lead chosen: Board 2 Dealer East N/S Vul. [Q87542 ]96 { 10 5 05 } J 10 [ 10 9 [J6 ]Q854 ] A K 10 {A872 {K964 }842 }AKQ7 [AK3 ]J732 {QJ3 }963 Open Room West North East South K.Anderson T.Helness L.Anderson G.Helness 2NT Pass 3} Pass 3{ Pass 3NT All Pass

Both sides reached 3NT by East and we were expecting a strike with the [A, which would yield a huge deposit of tricks. At this table Gunn Helness preferred to lead the {Q and nine tricks were scored. At the other table Rosalin Anderson led her fourthbest heart and it was a flat board. At 69 tables, a top spade was led against 3NT to defeat the game. The next board was a potential slam, which would require a close decision in the play: Board 3 Dealer South E/W Vul. [KQ3 ] A 10 8 5 2 { J 10 }K96 [ 10 8 5 2 [J764 ]64 ]K {K843 {Q7652 }QJ7 }853 [A9 ]QJ973 {A9 } A 10 4 2 Open Room West North K.Anderson T.Helness Pass Pass

North and South both had a bit to spare but they stopped in 4]. It was the same contract at the other table (1NT – 2{ – 2] – 3NT – 4]), where Marina Darling (South) might have broken the transfer or cue-bid 4} over 3NT to show a good fit for hearts. Anyway, the play is of interest. How would you tackle 6] on a diamond or a spade lead? You can discard the diamond loser on the third spade. One possible line is to rely on a trump finesse. The other (which seems better) is to lay down the ]A. If the ]K does not fall, you will eliminate spades and diamonds, planning to exit to the bare ]K and force that defender to open the club suit. 24 declarers bid and made 6]. Only two (we believe) were favored with a }Q lead, so it seems they must have chosen the elimination line, claiming when the ]K fell. 13 declarers went one down.

Game was reached on a combined 19-count, with Kenneth Anderson liking his void in the suit bid and raised by North/South. Lin Anderson ruffed the club lead, crossed to the {A and ruffed another club. As the cards lie, cashing the ]K next works well and will permit an overtrick. However, declarer cashed the {K and ruffed a diamond with the ]8, North discarding the [10. After ruffing her last club with the ]K, she called for a good diamond. North discarded a club (it is perhaps better to ruff). Declarer then threw a spade and South ruffed with the ]4.

The West hand looks good for a club contract, and the spades seem rather weak for a 3[ rebid. So, West might have rebid 3} instead. Anderson won the club lead with the ace and cashed the [A. The contract can be made by running the {Q, ruffing a heart, cashing the {A and exiting with a trump to the bare [Q. Declarer ruffs the diamond return, leaving himself with: [J8 }Q65 to South’s [K9 ]Q }K8 After the }Q to the }K, declarer ruffs the ]Q with the [8 and crosses to dummy’s }10 to promote his [J with a heart. Declarer actually played the ]A-K, ditching the {10 and there was then no way home. All 9 declarers in 4[ went one down. Two declarers bid and made 6}. 3NT and 5} were the popular contracts, making at all tables except one.

Lin Anderson led the ]7 to the jack, queen and ace. The contract can be made now by cashing the {A-K and crossing to dummy with the ]K, East showing out. Declarer discards one spade on the {Q and ruffs the {10. He then crosses to the }A and ruffs a club. With eight tricks already made, he exits with one of this three remaining spade losers and must make his ]10-8 to bring the total to ten. Not expecting the trump lead to be a singleton, Helness preferred to play a second trump to the king at trick 2. After this start the game should go down. Disappointingly, the play record stops short with “10 tricks claimed” in a position where only 9 tricks were available. It is possible that the defenders allowed a trump coup to be set up, by leading a club instead of a spade at a late stage. At the other table the defenders began with three rounds of spades. Declarer ruffed with the ]J and then played the ]K, going one down for 12 IMPs away. The Helgeness team won by 37 IMPs to 2, giving them a win by 18.58 VPs to 1.42.

ROUND 2 MIXED TEAMS

Barry Rigal I sat down to watch table six (not on VuGraph) featuring the largely Polish squad of Pszczola against Failla. The table I was focusing on saw Sabina Auken-Roy Welland take on Luigi Ligambi-Ornella Colonna. The former play natural with a potentially short club and transfer responses to one club, the latter Blue Club with weak no-trump. The first deal saw Welland coax an overtrick out of what in theory ought to have been a straightforward ten-trick four heart contract. On the next deal we saw what would be a trend in the match, namely Ligambi taking an aggressive position on a deal where his partner had taken a slightly cautious one. Board 12. Dealer West. N/S Vul. [865 ] 10 9 5 3 { 10 7 5 4 } Q 10 [ 10 9 74 [ ]KQ ] {A3 { }AKJ76 } [Q3 ] J 8 7 42 {K8 }8432 West Ligambi 1} 3} 3[ 5[ Pass

king to make 13 tricks. My first thoughts are that declarer might have been safer to cash both clubs before making the second diamond play. Then he plays the {J and ruffs a diamond, crosses to a heart, ruffs the fourth diamond, then leads a spade to the jack, which protects against 4-1 trumps long on his left -- but admittedly that wasn’t likely when his LHO had long diamonds. They reached slam in the other room but made only 12 tricks, so that made it 1-1 after two deals. The score stayed that way when Ligambi again took a solo trip to the five-level with: [ ] { }

KJ85 Q9872 Q74 8

He could respond with a semi-positive 1] to a strong club. His partner showed 23-24 with a jump to 2NT (perhaps promising enough controls to be interested in slam?) and he showed five hearts and four spades by transferring then bidding his second suit. His partner quietly raised to 4[ and now he moved on with 5} — without that much obvious in the way of extras? That got him to an excellent slam facing [AQ104 ]A4 {AKJ3 }AQ3 (and yes maybe his partner owed him a cuebid raise again). The score remained 1-1 when they also reached slam in the other room. A quiet 4[ game off the first two heart tricks saw no swing either, before the real action began.

AKJ2 A6 QJ962 95

East Colonna 2}* 3{ 4[ 6[

2} Five controls I’m not sure if East could have bid 4[ or 5] over 3[ but as it was, West really didn’t have anything in hand after the simple raise. Imagine the East hand without the {J and [J for example. Still faint heart never won fair lady, and Failla was rewarded when dummy came down with just the right set of values to make slam good. After a heart lead won in hand, he led a spade to the king, and the diamond queen was covered all round. He led a diamond to the jack, ruffed a diamond as Welland pitched a club, and now led a spade to the 8

Five diamonds looks closer to making; on a spade lead declarer can take his discards and may then be able to come home on some good views in the minors. Blass/Sarniak saved in 5[ over 5{ and the defence cashed out accurately to collect 500 for 5 IMPs, so Failla led 6-1.

Colonna’s low heart lead gave declarer an eighth trick but she was reluctant to take an early club finesse, and lose the next 11 tricks or so. So she cashed three diamonds and gleaned from the signals that the [AK rated to be wrong. Thus the club finesse also figured to be wrong, given West’s passivity in the auction. So she cashed out diamonds from the top then exited with ace and another club, for down one. That made it 10-1 to Failla.

Failla took the lead when they were closed out of an auction where they could make 3NT after a nonvulnerable preempt from Welland, defending 3[ for 100. Meanwhile in the other room Sarniak had to struggle in a 4-3 heart fit at the four-level, down one with 3NT cold. But the last laugh went to Welland when in one room Sarniak opened a Polish Club and defended 1NT for -150. Things were far more exciting in the other room: West Ligambi 1NT All Pass *Take-out

Roy Welland TEAM PSZCZOLA On the next deal Ligumbi finally ventured ‘a bridge too far’. He heard his partner open 4], and he was looking at: [ KQ62 ]3 {AK1098 }A94 Yet again, he risked the five level, bidding 5]. When his partner raised to six he appeared to have caught his partner with as suitable a hand as possible – a 3-71-2 with solid hearts. Alas for him the defenders led clubs, and with the diamond honours not dropping in three, Colonna needed the spade ace onside; no luck there. In the other room Blass/Sarniak bid 1]-2{2]-2NT-4], suggesting solid hearts and a minimum, and Sarniak did well to pass. That made it 12-10 for Pszczola.

Ligambi had an absolute maximum for his opening bid, but it wasn’t nearly enough. Colonna was forced to run to spades when Auken had values to spare for her double. Kudos to Welland for stretching to come into the auction. He also guessed well to lead a low diamond, and Colonna could hardly be blamed for the somewhat desperate manoeuvre of ducking in dummy at trick one. Auken cashed two diamonds and played a third, and declarer led a trump to the ten and queen, then advanced the heart queen, covered all round. She ruffed a heart to hand, then misguessed clubs, and Auken won her ace, drew trumps, and the defence had a diamond and club for the last two tricks. While declarer could have done a trick better, it would still have cost 8 IMPs to go for 500. As it was, Pszczola had 12 IMPs to win 22-14.

Both Souths then had to choose on a blind auction what to lead against 4] from [ ] { }

KJ876 3 A643 10 7 4

Both unerringly put their fingers on a low spade, into declarer’s ace-queen doubleton, and found that any other suit would have defeated the game without a struggle.

Z IMM E R M A N N vs P U I L L E T Jos Jacobs For the first round of this mixed team event, I decided to make life easy for myself by simply choosing the first table in sight. This happened to be a match scheduled between two French teams: a pretty well-known one and one that is maybe not quite so well-known as far as the international circuit is concerned. Bridge, however, is not a game of reputations but of good bidding and play, as we shall see from (e.g.) board 3: Board 3. Dealer South. Over 1], North started off with a general GF bid of 2}. Three Clubs was natural and 3] then set hearts as trumps. 3[ was a cuebid and 3NT showed a spade control as well. This enabled South to launch RKC. When he found his side had four keycards, he could bid the slam with some confidence. West at this table did not make the helpful }Q lead that we saw in the Open Room but she led a diamond instead. Declarer won, played off three round of spades to get rid of his losing diamond, ruffed himself back to hand with dummy’s last diamond and advanced the ] Q. When West did not cover this, declarer, after some thinking, put up dummy’s ace. When the king appeared, he claimed his contract, as he would lose no more than the now inevitable club loser. Puillet +980 and 11 IMPs to them. Now let’s consider the a priori chances to make 6]. Finessing the ]K gives you a straightforward 50% (but with the extra chance that having eliminated the pointed suits first, losing to a singleton king still leaves you with a theoretical hope) but cashing the ]A is the winning line not only if the king comes down but also if the player holding the doubleton king has at least one club honour. You would have to guess the club position correctly in that case so it is impossible to produce a precise percentage for this line of play. Assuming the defenders will win the ]K and shift to a club honour, you make game whenever the heart king drops (26%) or when hearts are 2-1 and the club

In the Open Room, Zimmermann showed a raise to game in hearts by bidding 3NT but Dikhnova was not interested in more than that. On the lead of the }Q, she was able to win her ace, take a losing trump finesse and still come to 12 tricks by means of a finesse of the }J in the end. Zimmermann +480. In a sense, N/S were right to settle for 1NT as only eight tricks were made on the obvious spade lead. Declarer refrained from the safety-play in clubs for four tricks, going for all five tricks in the suit instead… Zimmermann +120. Not that it mattered very much as this was the auction in the Closed Room: West D'Ovidio

In the Closed Room, D’Ovidio had little trouble in bidding the slam after Cronier’s GF 2] rebid followed by 3NT which strongly suggested 1-4-3-5 distribution. On anything but a trump lead, declarer would have time to take a diamond finesse and ruff his three losers (two hearts and the last diamond) in dummy before turning his attention to trumps by leading dummy’s last trump, the queen. Robert as South followed up his fine performance on the previous board (No. 3) by another potentially winning action: he led a low 12

trump. Once declarer played low from dummy (the logical thing to do) the contract had become much harder to make. Still you would expect declarer to come to 12 tricks – perhaps by testing spades and falling back on the diamond ruffing finesse. Declarer lost his, way finishing two down in the end. Puillet another +200 and another 13 IMPs to them.

Things got worse for Zimmermann when they missed a good 3NT on the penultimate board, due to what looked very much like a systemic disagreement.

This time, it was E/W’s turn in the Open Room to show little ambition. On the normal diamond lead, declarer came to nine easy enough tricks by establishing the clubs. Puillet +600. West D'Ovidio

With the spade position clear after the [8 lead, declarer immediately won his ace. He went on to play the }Q, covered by king and ace, returned to hand in hearts and finessed the }10. This way, his nine tricks were safe and he finished up with an overtrick in the end. Puillet +430 and another 7 IMPs to them to win the match 33-8 or 16.07 – 3.03 V.P. 5 13

8TH EUROPEAN OPEN BRIDGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Montecatini, Italy
