The Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Surgery Center

The Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Surgery Center About the Program The Mount Sinai Medical Center has been a leading institution for the management of head and neck disease for nearly half a century. The Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Surgical Center provides each patient with a team of nationally recognized physicians and surgeons that works together to provide stateof-the-art curative management of tumors of the oral cavity, larynx, skull base, and thyroid gland.

The Multidisciplinary Team Approach to Cancer Management Curative management of tumors of the oral cavity, larynx, skull base, and thyroid gland typically requires multimodality therapy that may include surgery, radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy. The Multidisciplinary Center provides patients with a coordinated schedule of consultations with each member of the team during a single visit. This model is designed to optimize care and limit return visits. The Center provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for patients afflicted with head and neck tumors. Each patient will have access to top physicians and surgeons with the following specialties: Head and neck cancer surgery Head and neck reconstructive surgery Thyroid and parathyroid surgery Skull base surgery Neurosurgery Radiation oncology Medical oncology Oral surgery and dentistry Endocrinology Speech and language pathology Cytopathology and surgical pathology Diagnostic and interventional radiology Physical and occupational rehabilitation Nutritional support services

The Latest Research and Surgical Techniques Mount Sinai’s multidisciplinary head and neck cancer team has gained national recognition for its expertise and innovation in the management of head and neck cancer. Many patients have concerns about their appearance following head and neck cancer surgery. Our expert team works to cure patients and preserve quality of life using the most advanced minimally invasive and endoscopic surgical techniques, as well as complex reconstructive procedures. We offer state-of-the-art computerized reconstruction treatment planning to improve patient outcomes. In addition to a tradition of clinical excellence and coordinated expertise of its teams of surgeons, physicians, and support staff, the Center offers innovative clinical trials for the management of rare and recurrent diseases. The research laboratories are also actively investigating new methods for treatment of head and neck tumors, and many basic science projects are dedicated to improving early detection and intervention for patients with diseases of the head and neck.

Robotic Head and Neck Surgery Surgeons at The Mount Sinai Head and Neck Surgery Center are using robotic surgery to achieve curative treatment of oral and laryngeal tumors without the need for external incisions. While a surgeon sits at a console directly controlling the robot, the robot arm extends small instruments through the mouth and manipulates them. The robotic technology allows the surgeon the ability to perform the surgery using a high powered three-dimensional camera, minimally invasive surgical instruments, and laser technology. Use of the robot allows our surgeons greater visualization, dexterity, and precision during an operation, as well as the ability to perform procedures in a much less invasive fashion. Originally developed by the military for remote surgery in the battlefield, transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has proven beneficial in decreasing surgical morbidity, length of hospital stay, and improving postoperative swallowing and speech.

Endoscopic and Minimally Invasive Management of Tumors of the Head and Neck Some tumors can be treated with nonsurgical therapy, but when surgery is required, the head and neck team at Mount Sinai is skilled in minimally invasive techniques. Members of

the surgical team are able to remove tumors of the larynx, pharynx, thyroid, parathyroid, and skull base with minimal access, while preserving the voice and swallowing capabilities. Using endoscopic techniques, surgeons remove many of these tumors without incisions. They also utilize the cutting-edge technology of the surgical robot in order to gain access to difficult anatomic areas.

Tumors of the Skull Base Tumors of the skull base are managed by head and neck, otologic, and neurosurgical teams. Using advanced technology, surgeons apply minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques to achieve complete resections with minimal, or in some cases, no external incisions. Using a combination of endoscopic techniques and minimally invasive surgical approaches, the skull base team at Mount Sinai has perfected the resection of tumors of the skull base without the need for facial incisions. Endoscopic technology enables the surgical team to remove select skull base tumors through transnasal approaches. The team also offers expertise in facial reanimation following facial nerve injury.

Advances in Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery Tumors of the thyroid and parathyroid are also managed using minimally invasive techniques. Preoperative localization of parathyroid tumors and the use of intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring allow our surgeons to perform thyroid and parathyroid surgery through very small incisions. Procedures can commonly be performed under local anesthesia with same day discharge, using an incision that is often less than one inch long.

About The Mount Sinai Medical Center The Medical Center, located in New York City, consists of The Mount Sinai Hospital, a tertiary care facility known for excellence in patient care, and Mount Sinai School of Medicine, a leader in medical research and in the education of tomorrow’s physicians by internationally known faculty. Founded in 1852, The Mount Sinai Hospital is one of the oldest voluntary teaching hospitals and one of the leading academic medical centers in the country. Today, the patients of Mount Sinai benefit as teams of physicians and scientists work together to rapidly translate laboratory research to new patient treatments. Many of the groundbreaking approaches that result from these collaborations are initially available at only a handful of facilities in the country. Some of these advances are only available here, making Mount Sinai the first choice for patients with complex medical and surgical needs.
