Delivering service vehicles for use in the mining and construction industries requires a keen understanding of how such vehicles will be used in the field. WWL’s experience saw it working with a large mining OEM to develop their fleet of Light Truck and Utility vehicles. Challenge To standardise a National Light Truck and Utility service body vehicle – ensuring uniformity in both fabrication and equipment supplied. At the time each vehicle was uniquely designed which meant that no cross over use of vehicles was possible. The new design needed to allow the service personnel the ability to still be flexible with the operation and application of these units allowing them to service their customers’ needs. Having a standardised vehicle would allow flexibility to the company with all workers being able to be allocated any of the vehicles to use, as they would be the same across the fleet.

Solution WWL Engineers worked on concept designs after discussing key requirements and inclusions with the OEM. These needed to be suitable for vehicles being deployed in either a mining or construction environment. WWL also recommended different ways to offer safety methods of ‘three points of contact’ as well as having an option to have hydraulic stabiliser legs for cranes to ensure streamlined operations. To share these designs with the OEM customer, WWL engineers brought the concepts to life by developing 3D images demonstrating the vehicle capabilities. Collaboration with the OEM was key and resulted in an agreed national specification.

Result The OEM has a standardised national specification for their Light Truck and Utility service body vehicles. This allows them the flexibility to transfer any vehicle in fleet to any location in Australia to meet demand. It also means that vehicle users, regardless of location, are familiar with the design, equipment and features. This consistency allows faster deployment of vehicles in the field and this supports an integral part of the OEM’s field operations. It also saves time in training vehicle users, creates efficiencies in vehicle operations (all equipment has uniform location by model) and the OEM has an identifiable service vehicle that their customers will recognise.

Why safety?

Safety should always be the first priority in the workforce. Your staff deserves to work in a safe environment to ensure they can do the most important thing at the end of the day – go home to their families.

Workplace safety is even more important in environments that carry a higher risk. This is where WWL can help. We provide and manufacture a range of safety products suitable for your vehicles and equipment, protecting your staff from field risks.

Safety Rails

Not only can WWL supply our customers with safety rails, we manufacture them ourselves to ensure you receive the highest quality standards. All safety rails can be customised to suit all makes and models required to ensure that everything fits perfectly.

Anti-vibration mounts are used which ensure sturdier railings for workers Flexible mounting bases and handrail attachment brackets used for all safety rails To ensure the highest accuracy and ease of fitments of safety rails, they are built and tested in laser cut jig assemblies Full bolt kits can be provided for assembly

Safety rails include internal pipe sleeves which eliminate breakage by providing reinforced strength Fully engineered CAD drawings which meet Australian Standards All safety and hand rails can include gates that swing, to ensure accessibility and flexibility when required

Roll Over Protection Structure (ROPS) External

WWL External ROPS range has been designed to ensure we reduce weight, whilst maintaining structural integrity and maximum operator protection. The unique approach of the WWL External ROPS is to reduce the weight of the ROPS system without significantly reducing the carrying capacity of the vehicle and in most cases, removes the issue of axle weight overload. Another benefit of our WWL External ROPS range is ease of fitment by reducing the mount plate sizes currently being used on traditional ROPS systems. The WWL External ROPS range is classed by truck tare weights and each design has been given a weight class starting with our series for trucks up to around 3600kg tare weight and increasing through various weight divisions currently up to models for trucks up to 10,000kg tare weight.

Roll Over Protection Structure (ROPS) Internal WWL also offers Internal ROPS solutions minimising roof crush and cab distortion in the event of a roll over. ROPS are vital to ensuring that if vehicles are involved in an accident, they can dramatically improve occupant protection. Our internal ROPS are designed around vehicle airbags to ensure that they will still be deployed without interference from the internal ROPS.

Our goal is to provide you with a safe and reliable product which is why WWL also uses these methods and products in producing the ROPS: Auto-CAD design Certified welding to AS1554 Jig assembled CNC bending Constructed from 350mpa seamless roll cage using Cold Drawn Welded (CDW) Tube Light weight Roll bar tube joiners Roll cage padding to ADR 3/02 Mounting brackets laser cut for accuracy Complies with LH8/9 & LK8 standards Certified by independent engineers

Pacific Material Handling (PMH) is a recognised national supplier providing comprehensive material handling solutions to some of the largest manufacturing, port and logistics companies throughout Australia. WWL traditionally worked with PMH for their ocean requirements and approached them to see how WWL could offer services to improve their operations. Challenge Our team at WWL met with PMH to see if they had any concerns with their fleet service vehicles. PMH was looking for solutions to standardise the look and functionality across their fleet. They required a practical design for their vehicles without compromising storage space for their staff to store their valuable tools of the trade. They also needed to ensure that the quality of the final product was high to ensure durability of the product.

Solution The WWL Engineering Team created a prototype for PMH and was able to provide improved functionality of the vehicles. This included superior workmanship on the tray, service body and the toolboxes. Not only were functional toolboxes created, WWL was able to find the customer solutions with their trays to help them be more efficient while they are on the road.

Result WWL, in collaboration with PMH, developed a standardised design allowing PMH to have more flexibility in managing their fleet. WWL was able to provide PHM with advice not only on their primary requirements, but also on how the rest of the vehicle setup could be run more efficiently. WWL was able to get their vehicles market ready quickly, with improved quality – this meant less down time and greater use in the field.

‘General workmanship was seen as a significant improvement to tray/boxes we have received in the past’. – Cameron Leigh, National Commercial Manager at Pacific Materials Handling

The Australian light and mid-range truck market is a hotly contested segment. Offering greater value to their customers by having OEM endorsed attachments ensures quality and brand position. So when one of the major truck brands wanted a superior steel tray, WWL was there to design and build a solution. Challenge With a large footprint in the Australian market, the customer required newly designed steel tray options that would support uniformity in quality and features. The customer had their cab chassis product fitted with a variety of after-market trays – sourced from a number of providers. This created challenges in the supply chain, the trays were not consistent in their fit for purpose, carried a variable cost (based on location) and the combination of these factors could impact brand perception in the market place.

Solution WWL Engineers designed a number of concept drawings and 3D images to present to the OEM. Following feedback to the initial designs, WWL then set about developing the final specification and design. Prototypes of steel trays were then built and adjusted at our Newcastle site until the final production design was approved. To further customise the product for the market, WWL used specialised on-site equipment to laser cut the OEM’s logo into the tray enhancing brand appeal on the road. The trays are fitted prior to delivery to dealers, ensuring that vehicles are ready to hand over to a final customer once delivered to a dealership.

Result Having a uniform 6 pallet Steel Truck Tray with drop sides to serve the national requirements has allowed the OEM to run with Australia wide sales offer on specific truck models. It provides a high specification that supports the customers’ objectives in the market with respect to quality, features, durability and ability to delivery quickly against their business demand. Having the tray carry the OEM brand adds to the street appeal of the product. The truck/tray combination has gone on to support the OEM sales. WWL was pleased to learn that the finished product also featured at the 2014 Melbourne Truck Show as one of the trucks being exhibited. This is a testament to the quality of the WWL Steel Tray.
