Curtis Gates Lloyd Papers, 1859-1926 Collection No. 11

Abstract The collection consists of the personal papers, especially correspondence, botanical writings, primarily in published form, and financial records of Curtis Gates Lloyd, mycologist and book collector. Also included are early records of the Lloyd Library and Museum. The bulk of the materials represent the span between the late 1870's and 1926. Biographical Sketch Curtis Gates Lloyd was born in Florence, Kentucky, on July 17, 1859. He was the third son of Nelson Marvin and Sophia Webster Lloyd. Lloyd attended schools taught by his mother, first in Florence, and then in Crittenden, Kentucky. The family moved to Crittenden in 1867, and Curtis lived there until he was 18, when he moved to the Cincinnati area to pursue a career. Curtis's father ran the Crittenden Drug Store for a brief period in the early 1870's, and Curtis worked in the store. In this area he was following in the footsteps of his two older brothers, John Uri and Nelson Ashley Lloyd. John Uri was to become an internationally renowned chemist and pharmacist, but at the time was a struggling student of pharmacy. For Curtis' birthday, John Uri sent him an 1875 edition of Wood's Class-Book of Botany. On the flyleaf of the volume Curtis says "...was the means of interesting me in the study of botany. As a boy, I was always fond of natural history and used to spend my time chasing through the woods and I remember now my delight when I first began to study plants by means of this book." The push towards the field of botany and pharmacy, and the town of Crittenden played determining roles in C. G.'s life. When C.G. moved to Cincinnati, his first position was as an apprentice in the pharmacy of Dr. Johnson, located on the corner of Ninth and Elm Streets. Dr. John King, the prominent Eclectic physician and editor of the American Dispensatory, had his office on the second floor of the building. The two formed a close friendship, aided by Dr. King's interest in medicinal plants, and C.G.'s interest in botany as a whole, as well as his concerns with botanical medicines. King

acted as advisor to Lloyd, and they worked in harmony until King's death. While at Johnson's Pharmacy, C.G. passed his examination before the Pharmacy Board, and received his certificate as a pharmacist. During this period, C.G. pursued his study of plants as time allowed, and began to systematically assemble a personal herbarium. C.G. left the position at Johnson's pharmacy, and took a position as salesman with Hale, Justice and Co., a wholesale drug concern. This provided C.G. with more free time as his weekends were free. He found time, when not dancing or courting the young ladies of the area, to accumulate an extensive collection of the plants in the vicinity of Cincinnati, and to exchange plants with botanists from around the U.S. This led to the formation of an extensive collection of flowering plants. C.G. next moved to the Standard Publishing Co. as bookkeeper and manager. He remained at Standard Publishing until 1886. In the meantime, in 1884, in conjunction with his brother, John Uri Lloyd, C.G. began the publication of Drugs and Medicines of North America. Issued quarterly, the work became very popular in the medicinal and botanical fields. In 1886, when John Uri and Nelson Ashley Lloyd became sole owners of what then became Lloyd Brothers Manufacturing Pharmacists, they offered C.G. a one-third interest as a gift. C.G. was to specialize in locating, describing, and turning over to John Uri plants with known or potential medical benefits. John Uri would perform the chemical analyses and produce the pharmaceutical extractions, while Nelson Ashley would manage the business interests of the firm. The arrangement worked well until a meeting C.G. had with A.P. Morgan (see Coll. 12) in 1887. Morgan introduced C.G. to the field of mycology which then existed as primarily unchartered waters. Curtis' interest was immediate, and his intense scientific enthusiasm was quickly directed in the area. He ceased work on the Drugs and Medicines of North America (which ended with v. 2, no. 5, in 1887) and for the next five years concentrated his efforts on the Gastromycetes. His winters in the late 1890s were spent on various collecting trips: to Jamaica, Samoa, Italy and Egypt, etc. He was often accompanied by his friend Bill Rouse, brother of John Uri and a childhood chum of C.G. C.G.'s herbarium continued to grow, but now in the area of mycology. He received specimens from around the world, especially appealing to Jesuit priests and "crown" agricultural agents to send him specimens from their wide ranging posts. These he identified when possible and returned the information. While mycology was certainly his passion, he still had to accumulate the notes for a flora of Samoa (published posthumously) and photographic journals of his travels. Those of general interest he printed and gave to friends, while he added the photos of fungi to his herbarium. Both John Uri and Curtis Gates appreciated the value of the information in books at early ages, and both began to accumultate works in their respective areas of study as they were financially able. From the first, C.G. gave the "library" the greater share, both in time and money. Outgrowing its home on Elm Street, C.G. purchased a lot at 224 West Court St. and remodeled the building to serve as library and personal home. The development of the library, the Lloyd Library and Museum, was presided over by C.G. until his death. Information on the Lloyd Library and Museum is available elsewhere in the collections.

During the early 1900s, C.G. was generously excused by his brothers from most of his duties with the firm of Lloyd Brothers, Inc., and devoted the majority of his time to scientific study. Establishing offices at Kew in London and in Paris, C. G. studied the existing works on mycology as well as specimens, and published his own findings. He quickly attained a prominent and fractious role as a leading authority in the field. C.G. fought against using personal names in the identification of fungi, and attacked many of the mycologists of his day for attaching their names to anything they could grab. Overholts cites C.G. and W.A. Murrill as the two outstanding founders of the study of mycology. He credits the work of C.G. as being avowedly conservative, and extremely lucid and inclusive. In 1917, C.G. sold his interest in the firm to his two brothers and from that time until his death concentrated entirely on his personal interests. Curtis Gates Lloyd was a model of an early conservationist, purchasing a bog in New York State in order to preserve it in its native state, and gave the land to Cornell University. He purchased the Rouse farm in Crittenden, Kentucky, and preserved the old growth stand of trees that was on the land. This he established as the Lloyd Library Botanical Park, which was later given the Kentucky Department of Natural Resources. The farm land was used by C.G. to try new methods of farming, and to experiment with new types of crops. As well in Crittenden, he erected a community center which he called the "Welfare House" which was used by the community for gatherings, dances, and films. This too was established as a part of the Lloyd Library Botanical Park. The papers show C.G. Lloyd to have done extensive charity work, both on a personal and organizational level. The monies were generally given with specific directions that his name not be revealed as the donor. In the spring of 1926, C.G.'s eyesight rapidly failed him, a result of diabetes. He was forced to give up his mycological work entirely. After building up an internationally renowned Library and Museum, and securing a position of a leading authority in his field, he was forced to leave it behind. In his later years, he had devoted considerable time to the "old" home, Crittenden, and with his failing eyesight spent much of his last days in Crittenden among many of his friends. His nephew, John T. Lloyd, on a visit to C.G. at the museum, found him to be quite ill, and persuaded Curtis to go to the hospital. C.G. entered the hospital on November 6, 1926, and died there November 11 of Chronic Parenchymatous Nephritis (diatbetes). As per instructions of his will, his body was immediately cremated and spread to the winds on the Lloyd Library Botanical Park. Most of this wealth had already been placed in endowment of the Lloyd Library and Museum which serves as his legacy to the scientific world. Container List Box
