RESEARCH AND EVALUATION GRANTS UNDER REVIEW Telford, J.C., Scheinfeldt, T., and Ceglio, C. National Endowment for the Humanities, under review (submitted June, 2014; resubmission planned for June 2015) Military Histories ARE Health Histories: A Digital Humanities Project for Veterans’ Wellness. The web-based Veterans’ Health/History Project proposes a first-of-its-kind, humanities-driven intervention into cultural knowledge about the relationships between military and health histories from World War II through Operation Enduring Freedom. This University of Connecticut collaboration between the School of Nursing (SON) and the Digital Media Center (DMC) will use oral histories and other digitized materials from diverse archival collections to bring perspectives on military service from the medical and cultural history fields into critical dialogue with one another. The purpose is to serve and engage veterans—and the millions of Americans who, through personal and professional connections to veterans, can positively impact the health trajectories of those who have served. Hallett, C.E. and a team others applying to a charitable foundation in the UK known as the Leverhulme Trust. This is a network grant, involving several different universities and scholars from about eight countries. The focus of the study is internationalism in nursing, and we are looking at how the nursing profession was developing along international lines in the two decades prior to the war, how the war disrupted this process, and the ways in which the disciplinary knowledge base of the nursing profession continued to develop during and after the war years. The outcomes of this grant would include my participation in workshops, probably in Manchester or possibly in Philadelphia at the Bates Center. The eventual outputs from the study would be a book (published probably with Manchester University Press) to which I would be invited to contribute as well as a special 'section' in the journal 'Nursing History Review'. Connerton, W., Fairman, J. and others applying for the Smithsonian National Museum of American History to feature professional nurses’ contributions to American development. With over 3 million nurses in practice today, the profession has blossomed from its early days when the first trained nursing schools opened in 1873. We believe that nursing offers a unique perspective on the context of the development of the nation, and includes the intersection of race, class and gender.
