The Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) V: Michigan Site This study will extend observations through the late PM, a necessary step to assess the impact of the MT on agerelated diseases. The specific goals are to: 1) complete the characterization of the natural history of reproductive aging through the late PM; 2) evaluate the impact of reproductive aging through the late PM on health outcomes clinically relevant to women in their 60s, and 3) identify potential underlying mechanisms linking reproductive aging and health by assessing the relation of inflammation, hemostasis and adipokines to the occurrence and progression of biological, functional and clinical outcomes. Role: Co-Investigator MCube University of Michigan, Arnedt JT, Gross B, Baylin A Light Innovations in the Workplace to Promote Physical and Mental Health We propose to use LED based skylight emulators (i.e. lights that mimic daylight throughout the day) to study their effect on sleep, mood, food intake, physical activity, and cognitive performance. Role: PI Pending: R21 $275,000 NIH, Baylin A, PI 9/01/16-8/31/18 Effect of LED based skylight emulators on weight gain We propose to use LED based skylight emulators (i.e. lights that mimic daylight throughout the day) to study their effect on weight gain. Role: PI R01 NIH, McGarvey S, PI 06/01/16-05/31/21 Integrated cellular, mouse and human research on a novel missense variant influencing adiposity in Samoans The objective of this grant is to identify genes and the physiological pathways that mediate a novel missense variant that influences adiposity in Samoans by studying humans, cell cultures, and knock-out mice. Role: Consultant R01 $128,804.00 NIH, Hummel S, PI 09/01/16-08/31/21 Dietary prevention of hypertensive heart failure with preserved ejection fraction in postmenopausal women Our goal is to explore a DASH diet for hypertensive heart failure among SWAN participants Role: Co-Investigator 2

Completed: R01 HL093093 $1,161,658 NIH, McGarvey S, PI 9/1/09 – 12/31/14 Genome-Wide Association Studies of Adiposity in Samoans We propose to use GWA methods to elaborate our ongoing genetic epidemiology research on adiposity phenotypes among adult Samoans. We will conduct these studies using a population sample from rural Samoa, an independent nation experiencing economic development and nutritional transition. Role: Co-I (PI of the subcontract) MCube University of Michigan, Miller A, Pamela Davis-Kean P, Baylin A Healthy Families Project This cube is combining videotaped assessments, natural language assessments, and biological assessments that will shed light on the process of family mealtime processes, eating behavior, and childhood obesity risk from an interdisciplinary perspective. Role: Co-I MICHR pilot program $74,432 University of Michigan, Wang, PI 01/01/13 – 06/30/14 Comparisons of Dietary Patterns and Metabolic Pathways of Midlife Women With and Without Diabetes and Related Diseases The objective of this proposal is to evaluate the utility of using measures of dietary exposures and concomitant serum metabolomic profiles in mid-life women participating in the longitudinal, multiethnic Study Of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) without metabolic abnormalities at visit 5 who do and do not develop the metabolic syndrome (MetS) or type II diabetes (T2DM) by visit 12, after 7 years follow-up. Role: Co-PI R21 HL098495 $295,425 NIH/NHLBI, Baylin A, PI 8/15/2010-6/30/2013 Genetic modification of triggers of acute myocardial infarction Our overall objective is to identify genetic modifiers of triggers of acute myocardial infarction (heavy physical exertion and coffee) by examining genes involved in the sympathetic nervous system, renin-angiotensin system, caffeine metabolism, and genes that mediate some of the physiologic effects of caffeine Role: PI R01 HL081549 $1,201,227 NIH, Baylin A, PI 4/08/06 – 3/31/12 Genetic modification of PUFA biosynthesis and CHD In this study we will assess individual variability in the effect of dietary PUFA on myocardial infarction, by examining genes involved in their biosynthetic pathway. These genes include elongases and desaturases enzymes and their regulatory transcription factors, sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha. Role: PI MMOC/MNORC pilot program $48,000 University of Michigan, Baylin, PI 07/01/11 – 12/31/12 Fatty acids and risk of overweight in school-aged children We propose to examine whether dietary fatty acids are associated with overweight risk among school-aged children, and how environmental factors could modulate such associations. We propose to analyze 800 baseline 3

plasma samples from an ongoing cohort of 2,534 school-aged children (5-12 y at recruitment) who were not overweight at baseline from low- and middle-income families from Bogotá, Colombia. Role: PI MICHR pilot program $29,941 University of Michigan, Baylin A, PI 07/01/10 – 01/31/12 Genetic modification of triggers of acute myocardial infarction The main aim for this pilot study is to collect preliminary results to show the feasibility of conducting a new large case-crossover study in Colombia to investigate gene-trigger interactions Role: PI Salomon award $15,000 Brown University, Baylin A, PI 01/01/07 – 06/30/09 Genetic modification of triggers of acute myocardial infarction Our overall objective is to identify genetic modifiers of triggers of acute myocardial infarction by examining genes involved in the beta-adrenergic pathway and the caffeine metabolism pathway. Role: PI American Heart Association postdoctoral fellowship 0425810T $76,000 AHA, Baylin A, PI 7/01/04 – 1/31/06 Effect of dietary carbohydrates and hepatic lipase on HDL, apoprotein content and coronary heart disease In this study we will examine the effect of the interaction between hepatic lipase polymorphisms and carbohydrate intake on myocardial infarction. We will also examine if this association is modified by other environmental factors known to affect HDL cholesterol concentrations. Finally, we will examine whether the risk of myocardial infarction is determined by genetic and dietary effects on plasma lipoprotein types and not just their concentration. Role: PI
